Can we just appreciate how understanding both the daughters are? They are always at their mother’s side, helping in any way possible. They really are trying their best for their mother and all of them obviously really care for dally. They scold her, but they never beat her, harm her and even more they do everything possible to prevent her getting hurt. I’m really glad they were able to train dally into a nicer dog, as a family they really deserve it.

This behavior is NOT uncommon for Dalmations at all. They're extremely smart, and if you don't give them an outlet for that intelligence, or train them, then this is the result you will get. Chances are the behavior started because Dally was bored, and then when she realized she could get a yummy treat out of it, the behavior spiraled out of control from there.

yeah this is definitely another breed i have crossed off my list, next to dobermans/most shepherds/huskies. they are extremely intelligent and athletic and if left without a proper, regular outlet they become destructive. they are amazing dogs ofc, but only in the right hands. unfortunately too many people buy animals bc they're so popular or they look super cool/cute and forget that it is an intelligent creature in need of training and responsibility

Erin Maurer I had a dog (German Pinscher) who was food driven but she wasn’t the best with training. When we first got her, I tried to teach her to play fetch so she could get exercise and she couldn’t get grab it right. She loved food, and really got exited at the sight of a treat in my hand. I tried to teach her “grab it” to start it off, but she didn’t get that she had to hold it and would shake it, and then look at me expectantly. I didn’t give her a treat and tried to get her to hold it, she lost interest.

It was actually good to see how the owner didn't let Dally run up to dogs on a leash. My dog went through significant traumatic experiences with other dogs before we rescued him (he even had stitches all over his belly from being attacked) and so he is still afraid of other dogs which manifests as aggression towards them. The only time he won't try to be aggressive towards them is if they're small or I introduce him very slowly, controlled, and carefully. However, we live in an area where SO many people let their dogs off leash. Because of this, we have to muzzle him and can't even take him on hikes anymore because of how many random dogs off leash run up to him. We've been trying to work with him on his anxieties but it's hard when you can't control the situation. He still can't really manage well and we have to avoid other dogs a lot of the time (after 7 years of working with him). So when the mom said that she leashed Dally because she didn't ask if it would be alright if the two dogs played, I was SO HAPPY! I think recall training is important but I wish that Victoria showed owners doing more on-leash things to keep their dogs active. Maybe it's different in the UK but in the US there are dog parks where you can specifically go to have your dogs off leash so when people have them off leash outside of dog parks, its so frustrating.

Yes this! I have 2 rescued dogs that are reactive one out fear and the other one seems to be just aggression, but I have tried for years to desensitize them without any success because people leave their dog’s unattended, here they leave dogs go out to the street without supervision (even tho isn’t supposed to by law) so controlling my dogs reaction is very hard when dogs come up to them and don’t leave and the owner is nowhere to be found, they had biten me (redirected aggression) and biten one another, but the sad thing is here we don’t have dog parks, I’m actually thinking maybe I should build one
@mia_marie01

@@boniboni4912 I’m so sorry to hear that! It sounds like you’ve had the same problems as me! I heard about something called a pet corrector (it’s just a can of air but it blows really loudly and sounds similar to a cat’s hiss). I desensitized my dog to the sound of it so if an off leash dog approaches us I can press the button and make air come out. It might help with scaring the dogs away for you too!

My two dogs are often off leash. One is social but has great manners and doesn't approach dogs that don't want to socialize. The other isn't social and doesn't approach dogs. The issue isn't dogs being off leash, it's how they behave. One of our dogs (a different dog) had anxiety and would fear bite dogs that ran up to him, so I get the frustration

honestly commend the mum. the way she was overcautious in the park around other dogs was wrong but it is so much better than the owners who let their untrained dogs off lead and don't care when they bother other people or dogs. also loved that she thought she needed permission from the other dogs owners before letting hers approach, it shows her heart is in the right place
@giftofthewild6665
@giftofthewild6665 Жыл бұрын
She does need permission before letting her dog approach, everyone does. Doesn't matter how "friendly" your dog is. Don't let your dog approach other dogs without asking the other owner first. My dog doesn't really like other dogs approaching her, it stresses her out. Having to fend off "friendly" dogs is aggravating and spoils our walks.

As an American myself, people here definitely don’t know how to own a dog. Another issue you see here is that pets are almost expendable to lots of people because people won’t accommodate their dog’s if it’s inconvenient for them, they’ll just get rid of it or put it down. I know three people personally who have done both of these things multiple times. It’s bizarre honestly, people say they love dogs but really they love the idea of them. It sucks honestly.

Also, the cats got a new huge cat tree/gym for Christmas. It's keeping them occupied for the time being. But the locks remain. (Jan Griffiths).

I've never met a Dalmatian that didn't have some kind of a behavioral problem, including the one down the street and around the corner at are my local Firehouse. That one is very food obsessed as well! Just not the dog for me or most ppl who arent prepared to work for it! I think she got a dalmatian cuz she's obsessed with how cute they looked and didn't even think about the training it would need for its specific breeds drives.

Not cool to assume things bro, anyway i agree a dalmatian needs a LOT of mentally and physical exercise so it's not unusual to see people incapable to really have a good relationship with their dog. I tried teaching my dog to come back with the whistle, but after I stopped giving her treats for responding and coming back, she stopped listening to it...
@goonnscream
@goonnscream 4 жыл бұрын
Well that's the thing with recall... if you want it to be reliable 100%, you need to be reliable with treats as well. Or use a long line for a few month so they learn there's no option of not coming back. For optimal results use both ;)
@mirrepoix
@mirrepoix 4 жыл бұрын
you don't go straight from treats to no treats! you phase them out slowly. start giving treats every other time, then every third time, etc. etc. until you're no longer giving treats and they've got the command. if you stop treating cold turkey they catch on and if their motivation was just food, they're no longer interested in listening. some dogs are so food motivated that this will be a process (and you should still give treats sometimes when giving commands, even after phasing them out as a regular reward, also!). if a treat is needed for them to listen, sometimes that's just what you've gotta do. i hope this helps! it doesn't always work but it's worked well for me with dogs i've worked with.
@DogCompanion
@DogCompanion 4 жыл бұрын
Usually this occurs when you remove the treat too suddenly or when the recall isn't reliable. When training with treats it's best to gradually phase them out as she becomes reliable - so starting with a jackpot reward of multiple treats successively and lots of praise/fuss if the recall is perfect. Then as she begins to understand gradually reduce the amount of treats she is given but continue with the praise/fuss. Over time she'll learn that she will get rewarded with praise if she returns to you. Dogs trained with reward-based training for any command will see a decline in responses over time - known as the extinction phase. This is because the dog begins to learn that even if she responds to your commands she doesn't get a reward. To combat this, you should randomly reward your dog with a high value treat occasionally so she realises that there is potential for a reward. Which, increases the reliability of the command again. This goes for all commands, even a basic sit! But always reward with praise, it may not seem like much, but dogs generally love attention. I hope this helps :D
@ahhhhhh8493
@ahhhhhh8493 4 жыл бұрын
Depending on the dog you need to give treats for a while but it can take surprisingly long to completely phase out treats. What you might want to do it occasionally give treats when your dog comes back. That way your dog still gets a reward but it's not all the time.

Most likely a history of being starved since was abandoned. Most animals become masters of food hiding spots bacause 1 it resembles what they went through finding food in the wild 2 the animal is super smart (a trait that makes getting food easier) and super bored, 3 the animal was never taught that those food hiding spots are off limits to them, 4 absolute 0 impulse control.
