I really want to say, just in general, I've been very satisfied with this reaction series so far. I think a lot of people are just very enthusiastically passionate about this story, and there is so much depth to it all, that some folks can become overzealous about certain aspects of how the story is understood. like... as with any well told story, I think the most excited and overeager fans are the ones that can kind of jump the gun on information and interpretation, just a little bit. and tbh that's why I'm being a little bit careful with my observations about certain characters. it's sort of like how, in season 1, I could say a TON about Askeladd's behavior in some of the earlier episodes, like episode 8, or episode 10, but a lot of it wouldn't be appropriate to mention until you have the full context of his childhood, and his attachment to the legend of Artorius. in the same way, some characters in this season will have a big moment or two, which will recontextualize the things we know about them. and until those moments hit, I don't want to color your fresh opinion of any of the characters. I have very strong opinions about some of these characters, but I got to watch the show on my own, and come to these conclusions all by myself. if I could figure it out by the season's end, so can anyone... or at the very least, we can talk about it when we're equally informed. but yeah, regardless of what anyone says, I hope this reaction stays a positive experience.

The anime makes the timeline a bit confusing with the jumps but the span of the episode happens over three years. When we see Thorfinn at the farm next episode it'll be before those three years have passed and Canute will still be at war to become King of England.

This episode is basically real world history summarized in one episode. Yes, there was a real Canute and that's how he got to power (the death of his father was changed in the anime cause Askeladd didn't exist in real life but happened around the same timeline)

woooooo! okay, yeah, Canute episode!! I absolutely love the choice to lead into it with that Askeladd scene, just to give us some continuity with the previous season. Canute has progressed a ton since that time, and we need a bit of gentle reintegration into this side of things. and first of all, how dare you! (said in jest) Canute can be a beautiful princess, even with his beard! he has the range! look at those eyelashes! and if Canute is best girl in your heart, you follow that... don't let anyone tell you different.😌 anyway... I feel like this is a really excellent time to bring up the way Sweyn and Canute spoke to each other in episode 20. in particular, Sweyn mentioned how the crown has a mind of its own. "there are only two things that the crown orders the king to do. it orders him to use his power, and to increase his power." this wasn't just Sweyn trying to foist off responsibility for his own actions, onto some mystical force that the crown exerts. no... he was describing the very phenomenon that Canute is running into right now. regardless of what you initially intend as your ends, you will inevitably get caught up in pursuing the means. and that pursuit can quickly spiral out of control, and lead you into courses of action that you'd never consider taking, if you really had the power to choose. a king doesn't actually get to do what he wants. even at the time when Canute and Sweyn had this conversation, when Canute was saying bold things like "I'll teach you how to use the crown," he was already planning to kill his father... just as his father was planning to kill him. they'd both given up on a world in which they could coexist, even though neither of them would've chosen this, if their preferences were all that mattered. for each, the death of the other is just a means to an end. and now that Canute has achieved that end... now that he has the crown for himself... he is seeing what this entails. I think that's why Canute takes Thorkell's words so seriously here. "he offered a valuable warning. he's an honest man. it would surely be a pleasure to live like him." Canute has actually expressed a similar sentiment to this before, back in episode 20. when observing Thorkell at dinner, he notes that Thorkell does whatever he feels like doing, and everyone likes him for it. it's a very different existence to the kind of life that Canute has always had to live. here, we're seeing Canute's "for the greater good" logic on display. he's got a goal in mind, and he knows that he may have to sully himself and become a demon, in order to reach it. the ends justify the means, don't they? regardless of who he might have to poison, or threaten, or actually rain hell down upon. it makes a lot of sense out of Sweyn, in hindsight. also, "I hate when someone stops my battles more than I hate frogs!" is one of the best comedic lines in Vinland Saga. it comes out of absolutely nowhere, and seems very genuine... but like... wtf?? Thorkell is a menace, but you gotta love him.

@@thatxavianxfeline723 ah, yeah, a lot of my comments have gotten in a touch late because of life demands... always good to see you here too! ^_^ and god, yeah, I can't wait to get to Thorgil this season, because he's like... if you added one wrong ingredient to what Thorkell does, and it made him creepy. and that one ingredient is that he's just a little too smart. like, with Thorkell, you get the sense that he's just a big, simple guy. he can have a good head for certain elements of strategy, or warrior philosophy, but he doesn't make calculated moves toward being cruel, and it keeps his character feeling chaotically fun and endearing, despite how much damage you know he can do. Thorgil kind of highlights what's right about Thorkell by being the same ingredients if they were arranged wrong. he absolutely knows he's being gruesome, and that's the point for him. he makes for a really great character, because he's not even that direct of an antagonist for our main characters, but he does make a memorable impact. in general, I can't wait for the part of the plot that features Ketil more to start cooking, because I have so much to say about him. aaaaaa but I'm not sure how early I can mention certain things yet. in general, I think there are a TON of early warning signs for how things will eventually go with Ketil, and even from his first appearance, there's stuff I could say toward that... but I don't want to sway any opinions on him, because the kind of bait-and-switch presentation with him is kind of the point... it's not like anyone could be blamed for not immediately noticing that something isn't quite right with him. I guess I'll wait and see what Luke thinks in this coming week's worth of episodes. I think that's when stuff starts getting the potential to be divisive around Ketil.

@@kamuyking551 I stopped making any guesses for Vinland Saga after the end of season 1 because I was genuinely taken aback by what happened with Askeladd, so I am *very* interested in your thoughts about Ketil and Thorgil! I understand not wanting to get into spoiler territory, though, so I am happy to wait. I'd never considered Thorkell and and Thorgil similar, but when you pointed it out, I had an "oml, they ARE" moment. I have a gist/feel about characters that colors my offered commentary on them, and Thorgil was one of the cases where I found myself unable to decide if I liked him or disliked him despite his similarities to one of my favorite characters. He left me feeling unsettled, which doesn't happen often with anime. It is a testament to the mangaka's skill in character/world building. I look forward to seeing the future of these reactions with you! ^.^

26:41 Canute's plan is not evil, this method is the fastest way for the enemy to surrender without killing more men, women and children. War is hell, and if the 2 opposing kingdoms never back down, only the villagers will suffer more. Canute did this to save innocent lives, by simply killing one person, the enemy king. If they did not surrender they're King that keeps ordering his men to be meat shields just to stall them. Then England will suffer more as Canute demonstrated. It might be underhanded, but it's more nicer than Askeladd's strategies.

Your reactions vids of this show absolutely make my weekends, a reprise from work that I can look forward toe ach week. Canute is so badass, yet still gentle at the same time. Badass in the sense that he does NOT fuck around, and he can be damn intimidating. But also gentle and logical because he attacks the leaders he's at war with, not the people, not soldiers or innocent villagers being ravaged as war collateral damage. He finished it in less than 3 years with a calculated mind, instead of brute forcing it for 10 years like his father did. I personally think that this may be Askeladd's influence, because he was always so collected and intelligent, always looking for the most efficient ways of reaching desired outcomes. Funny how Askeladd ended up being a father figure/mentor to both Thorfinn and Canute in some ways, and we'll see how they both end up growing. Cant wait for more! Love love love this reaction series!

I might be overthinking, but Thorfinn and Canute have always been more or less foils to each other, and it still hasn't changed. I don't know why they cut the Eadric thing it really charcterizes how ruthless Canute can be, he's nipping any issues that could result from Eadric in the bud, he can't betray him if he's dead or reveal that he poisoned anyone.

They cut some stuff, and its art is just better in the manga, also the dialogue is cleaner, although that is mostly just a problem with sub translation. Chapter 61 - 62 if anyone is curious. Your reaction comments will be translated into fairly clean and understandable Japanese by KZbin's automatic translation function. I have seen many anime reactors stop watching season 2 halfway through, Your reactions to the first few episodes made it difficult for me to determine which type of reactor you are. I'm sorry, but I had my suspicions that you were just a reactor who likes fight scenes, or that you just like a heroic protagonist, or that you had heard ahead of time that season 2 would be a big change in tone from season 1 and you were just hiding your love of fighting for the benefit of the viewers. I had never seen a reactor translated so beautifully into Japanese, and from the little information shown in the anime you do not misinterpret the situation or the story progression terribly, you show a natural reaction to your first viewing, so I was watching the show hoping that you would be the type of reactor who would enjoy the human drama by looking at the inner lives of the characters, I could be reassured to do your reaction to the last ep4. I consider Vinland Saga Season 2 a masterpiece. I hope these upcoming episodes also make you continue to enjoy.

I think he meant "epic" as in "an epic" which is a literary term for a long story about a hero that serves as an organizing point of cultural or social identity. diagetically, within the story of Vinland Saga, the legend of Artorius would likely qualify as an epic, especially because "Artorius" correlates to King Arthur, who has a rather lengthy and fragmented canon. and on top of that, Askeladd looks to Artorius as guiding archetype, against which he compares people, and the world at large. so the tale also funcions as that organizing point for Askeladd's cultural/social identity. I think the word "epic" has suffered the unfortunate effects of modernization as well. much like how "awesome" has become a mild/casual term for "cool," when it originally meant "awe inspiring" as in like... someone who has seen a divine effigy or something. "epic" used to mean something broadly monumental, such that the event would be befitting of a literary epic. a moment where the hero has lost all hope, is brutalized, but then is faced with a situation that forces his eyes open to the fact that he does want to live, is actually very in line with the tone of a literary epic... it makes the situation dire before it can be overcome, and this reflects a severely important aspect of the hero's character. some people do still use the term in this way, and that's what I think Luke probably means. it's what I took it to mean. but in general, could you please be a bit more charitable to people? you seem to have a hairpin trigger for accusations, if this is getting you that riled up.
