Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and recognised by UNESCO among the monuments of the European Renaissance, along with Venice and Amsterdam. The old town is the most beautiful and ancient part of Dubrovnik. The heart of the Old town - Stradun or Placa, a busy street, cutting the fortress into two unequal parts.
Founded in the VII century. With 1358 under the Latin name Ragusa is the capital of the Dubrovnik Republic.
"Slavic Athens" is one of the centres of development of Croatian and Serbian culture and language, as well as now extinct Dalmatian language. In 1808, as a provincial city became part of the Illyrian provinces of France. Since 1815, in the Austrian Kingdom of Dalmatia. In the years 1918-1941 was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1941, and 1943 through 1945 - part ustashskaya of Croatia, 1941-1943 - in the UK, 1945-1991 - in the socialist Yugoslavia.
Walls of Dubrovnik (Dubrovačke gradske zidine) - a massive defensive stone wall with towers surrounding the Old city. This complex structure is one of the largest and most complete in Europe, and also one of the landmarks of Dubrovnik. The walls of Dubrovnik have a length of 1940 meters, the average thickness from the sea 1.5 to 3 meters, from the land of 4 to 6 metres and a maximum height of 25 meters. Most of the existing walls and fortifications were built in 14-15 century, but extended and strengthened up until the 17th century. The walls were built so strong that almost hurt during a massive earthquake in 1667, in which most of the city was destroyed.
A feature of these walls is that during their active use they never miss the enemy to the city.
Above the gates of Lovrijenac Fortress and today you can read the inscription in Latin, which translates as "Freedom is not sold for all the treasures of the world."
