Thrikkakara Vamanamurthy Temple is one of the very few temples in India that has Vamana as its deity . The temple is managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board and is located at Thrikakkara in Ernakulam district of Kerala . Along with Vamana, Shiva also reigns in a separate temple here. There are some palm leaf scriptures of historical importance in this temple. The main festival here is Onam . Onasadya is performed regularly in this temple. A large number of people irrespective of caste and religion participate in the Onasadya here. The Trikkakara temple is also one of the hundred and eight divine lands sung by the Azhwars , the Tamil Vaishnavite poets .
There is a story that Onam started being celebrated in Kerala during the Chera Empire . Thrikkakara was also within the kingdom of Cheraman Perumal who ruled from Mahodayapuram . He suggested that the festival which was held in the month of Singham at Thrikakkara temple should be observed in all Hindu homes. After that, Onam celebrations started in Kerala.
Many stone inscriptions can be found in the temple. From these we can know about the origin of Onam and so on. We can see Onam in them as an occasion when the villagers of the area gathered together to see Cheraman Perumal who ruled from Mahodayapuram . In the old days, the festival was celebrated in Thrikkakara from Thiruvonam in the month of Karkataka to Thiruvonam in the month of Chinga. So Onam was celebrated at the same time. Celebrations were held every 28 days by making Trikkakarayappan with clay flower beds of various sizes and worshiping them. Later the rituals continued the same but the festival was reduced to 10 days by the end of the month of Chingam. That's how the fig tree started to flower.
By the twelfth century, the glory of Thrikakkara temple began to decline. The rivalry between the kings and the subsequent problems faced by the Uralans and others affected the temple negatively. Even the daily offerings are costless. Even the priests lost their devotion to this temple. In this way the temple land was destroyed. Only the foundation of the temple was left at this time. Finally, in 1921, the temple was renovated and rededicated by the then King of Travancore , Mr. Then he took over the temple. Travancore Devaswom Board in 1949When formed, the temple came under it. Even today it is under the control of the Travancore Devaswom Board. When Kerala recognized Onam as a national festival in 1961, there was an incessant flow of devotees to the temple. Thousands are participating in the Onam celebrations here today. The flag is carried from the Thrikakkara temple for the Attachamayam held in Thripunithura .
It is interesting to note that unlike other temples in Kerala, Thrikkakara temple has never been influenced by the Namboothiris in its history . Even Edapalli Swarupa, a famous Brahmin royal family that ruled Kochi and its surrounding areas, could not claim the temple. But later Edappally lord became the Shantikaran here and got the right to appoint the Shantikaran. This situation continued till 1949. Shanti appointments are now being made by the Devaswom Board.
Thrikkakara is a vast temple complex with an area of more than eight acres. There are two temples inside it - Vamana temple and Shiva temple. The Shiva temple is the oldest. Legend has it that Mahabali was a perfect devotee of Shiva. It is believed that the Siva Lingam, which he worshipped, is in the Shiva temple. The custom in the temple is that after saluting Lord Shiva, Vamana should be saluted. In 2014, this Shiva temple and its sub-temples were renovated. The earlier temple was standing with an incomplete nalampalam. But the present temple has full nalampalam, separate thitapalli and well. Right in front of the Shiva temple is the enthroned shrine of Mahabali.
Vamanakshetra is situated on the north side of Shiva temple. The Vamanakshetra is bigger in size than the Shiva temple. Adjacent to this are the gopurams, the elephant enclosure, the shivelipura and the flagpole. It is housed here in a fairly large elephant cage.
