One thing I've noticed about successful guitar players is that they NEVER rant about how certain guitar players are so much worse or better than any others. They just focus on what they want to achieve.

Everyone is talking about nuno bettincourt at the moment but Marty Friedman is right up there on that level and has been pushing boundaries for quite some time himself. Gary Moore, r.i.p. was another on that level. I think even Hendrix would b amazed at where he pushed rock guitarist too. Marty Friedman is original and very talented

Yup, Marty Friedman's guitar playing is as unpredictable as ever! I don't know of any other guitarist appears to spit out notes in any direction at any one time. He's a very angular player. Thank fuck he stays well clear of the blues. Very refreshing.

I watched a video of him recording tracks on youthanasia and he really impressed me, I am learning guitar myself and he really is a talented player with a style that I haven’t heard yet. He was soloing on a Jackson V I think and the tone combined with how he plays was on another level. So found my way here to try and get to know him better. He has a lot of wisdom and some good advice for a noob like me lol

I'm the same as Marty. High gain, delay for solos and a wah. That's it. I'm not picky. I have an EVH 6L6 which is great and high end LTD models. They play fantastic. The newer ESP's for $5000 grand just aren't worth it. Maybe if E-ll kept the ESP logo I'd get one of those but not going to pay that much when the deluxe 1000 series play so good.

Epictetus would completely agree with you about how you only have control about what you do, not about how the world responds to it, if it responds at all, or about what happens. Your only concern is to do what you can do, as well as possible. All else is the luck of the draw. Bach never earned a dime from his music. Vivaldi died like a pauper. The greatest musicians were ignored during their lifetimes. The musician's reward is music itself, and the privilege to enter a dimension others can only observe and hear from the outside.

Friedman is being too modest about his supposedly "unfortunate" lack of interest in gear....to the contrary, it is one of his best qualities. There's WAY too much gear, much of it unnecessary, and too many "musicians" who are little more than guitar nerds. I really admire Friedman's detachment from the tools, because tools is all they are. Painters don't get obsessed with their brush or the tripod they have their canvas on. Even car mechanics aren't in love with their wrenches. Why should it be different for guitarists? Too much stuff, too little music, and a lot of guitar music is even mediocre or crap.

There wasn’t one connection made (probably on purpose) of the fact that Japan’s culture is directly responsible for their quality of music, and their creativity. For that matter, the quality/craftsmanship of their products. Their subways are squeaky clean, and people are cordial to each other. Look at the culture in America today….you have people being assaulted for their political views, tearing down statues, etc… You have so-called “musicians”, who’s sole purpose in life is to be a politician on social media. When you destroy the culture, you destroy the arts along with it (that includes movies, as well….which are also dog-sh*t now, for the same reason).

@@claudiocruzat8777 Every country has it’s flaws…..every single one of them. That said, I’ll take what’s happening in Japan any day of the week over what’s going on in America. Btw….in America, you’re either a workaholic, as you say, or you’re one of the dead-beats who the workaholics are supporting. It’s just like in a well-run corporation when your boss comes down on your for being 2min late. And, you look at him and say….”Really, dude? 5min is going to destroy this company?”. And, he (or she) says “No…5min means absolutely nothing. But, if the corporate policy said being 5min late was ok, then people would be showing up 15min late…”. Conservative values/culture can have it’s bad points….but, it becomes very tolerable when you see what happens OT a city run by liberals (or Democrats), like L.A., San Francisco, or N.Y. Where homeless people are doing drugs on the street, crime is through the roof, murderers are let out on the street, and the law-abiding citizens are paying for it the most. God-less people, that haven’t been raised right, or know right vs. wrong, will do whatever they think they can get away with in society (or at their jobs). I don’t know much about Chile, but I hope life is happy, and peaceful where you’re at. America is beyond broken at this point, especially the arts. It’s very sad to watch that happen to a country so many have sacrificed for.

@@claudiocruzat8777 There's a down-side to everything, and I agree....extremes are bad, regardless of topic. I've never heard any Japanese citize complain about that. But, be that is it maybe....workaholics are rarely a destructive nuisance to society. Compare Japan's society with America's today. And, they're as far a part as they can be. Japan is clean, crime is virtually non-existent, their citizens are considerate, their children lead the world in STEM scores. The list goes on. And, they value their country, values, and culture. You can't move to Japan until you prove to them that you won't be a destructive, burden on their society. I've never heard anyone, Japanese or otherwise, complain about how a good work-ethic has made them unhappy people. I'll take Japan's way of life ANY day over what happens when you give someone handouts. America is going through that now, along with a lot of other cancers.
