I sold vehicles from 1994 to 1999. I made some friends in the business during that time and we have stayed in touch over the years. The thing that amazes me, but it really shouldn’t, is how many deals still come down to one thing, the payment. There are countless examples of bad car deals really hurting people financially so you’d think there would be more awareness out there but it seems the majority of buyers don’t seem to care. During Covid I stopped in a dealership to see one of those friends who was the F&I manager, I remember him saying “Coming soon to a dealership near you, the 10 year auto loan, only 120 easy payments and it’s all yours” and how both of us had a really good laugh. As an electrician no way we need trucks these days if you work for company, the foreman drives the truck normally a XL or WT. The supply houses will bring most of the materials to job site anyways. Many of us have beat up hybrids or civics these days for the hatchback to keep a packout or dog sling in back seat for tools.

Right.😂. I love the perception that people in the trades all need brand new dually diesels every 2 years to "get the job done".
@TheCarGuyOnline6 күн бұрын
That's the point I'm getting at. Whether you have to buy it or the company, if the WT costs $50k instead of $30k, they need to charge the consumer more to get work done (inflation). Also the consumer gets charged more because the "supply house" is brining materials to the job site, there's cost in that and it is passed down (again more inflation). It's a vicious cycle. I do see a lot of small business owners buying these trucks as a write off surprisingly enough. Plenty of "small time" guys that own roofing companies and the like here in Colorado, they spend it or pay tax on it...one or the other.

From experience, brakes and tires are usually due around 60k miles plus other services like oil, transmission, differential, and brake fluid. The warranty is most likely expired. My guess is that you'll maybe get a year or two out of it and be out the money($7k year cost of ownership without a loan). If you buy new for $60k, keep it 3-4yrs, trade in will be $35-40k with low-med miles so even with loan interest your cost of ownership is $7-9k. Almost the same depending on vehicle you choose. I would love to go back to driving used trucks but the days of $2k-$5k trucks that run well are over, at least in my area.

The 2500s are higher cost right now for sure, I think they will balance out this year...lets hope. I see some for sale around 12k-14k with 170k miles, might be configured differently though. Also, if you factor in the cost of depreciation on a new truck, higher insurance cost, higher registration cost (states like CO), I think it's probably still quite a bit more expensive to buy new unless you are writing off depreciation in taxes....if you are going that route then new might be the way to go on 2500s.

I found the best search tool to be cars.com, it's easy to narrow down some dealers and locations, then just look at the dealer ratings. I would first email them, confirm price is actually what they claim, then move forward from there. Deals are finally starting to show up, they are just sporadic and not in every region.

Early days still, we still don't really know how the manufacturers will 'incentivize' the dealerships to 'playball' yet, is it going to be the 'carrot' or is it going to be the 'stick'?

Trucks are out of the question for me, trucks used to be a good valve for your money. My max budget is $40k out the door and thats a lot of money still. I can get a Toyota Camry hybrid. Those trucks are gonna sit a long time.

Im bummed as ive been looking into a lower milage 5th gen 4runner or 2nd gen sequoia. Leaning towards sequoia and the prices are ridiculous for high milage ones. Been holding off near a year now to see where prices go as i dont have to buy now
@TheCarGuyOnline6 күн бұрын
ME TOO! I have an old 2008 2nd Gen Sequoia with 234k on it now. I was trying to find one recently with...less mileage, maybe a 2016 or newer, I could not believe how much they cost. I'll probably just wait a bit longer as the 2nd Gen Tundra/Sequoia and 5th Gen Runners are way too inflated IMO.
@sootlifejew5 күн бұрын
You can get a 5th gen 4runner with 100k miles for mid $20K. Better buy now before people get the 6th gen, realize it's a pos and go back to a 5th gen.

@TheCarGuyOnlineКүн бұрын
It would really take a financial collapse/reset to correct things to wages. We'll see if that happens. The prices have dropped a bit on new vehicles lately, but really only in Q4 of 2024, and this is really just a reaction to the much overinflated prices in the first place, so it's not really a "drop" if you look at historical norms.

I understand you're trying to equate the price of materials to the cost of these vehicles and that has some bearing. But you know as well as I do following your channel the last generation versus new generation TRD pro is a $15,000 difference. Between that and COVID with market adjustment prices these companies and dealerships know they'll find a sucker to pay these high prices. Coven made it easy to warm people up to these price increases and they want to make them the status quo
@TheCarGuyOnline6 күн бұрын
I agree the "boutique" trims in vehicles have had a massive jump, that's part of their game too, when they price the TRD Pro that much higher, the SR5 ONLY jumping $5k or whatever it does, seems very fair in comparison. I do think we are finally starting to see lower trims drop to very reasonable levels in some parts of the country, but definitely not all (as seen in the video). I'm just hoping the trend continues, if it does, 2025 should be a buyers market to a certain extent.

Car prices will be another example of "the new normal" that will fail. The manufactures can't lower the price very much because it will destroy the loan and used car market. If they lower the price for a new car, all the people who have the previous year will be upside down overnight.

Yeah it feels very similar to the housing market. Folks bought houses at 2-4% interest rates for years, paid 700k + for homes that aren't worth it, and now everything is stuck in limbo. If prices fall, they all get hurt/can't sell etc....it's quite the pickle.

Car manufacturers blew up their design and manufacturing costs packing new vehicles with a bunch of superfluous features to justify inflated post-COVID price tags, now they are running out of buyers willing or able to pay for all of that non-essential stuff. I don't need a $200 app-controlled actuator connected to a $2000 computer module and a $1500 display module with 50' of wiring to move air vents. I'm perfectly fine with a practically weightless dumb $1 plastic trim piece that snaps into the air ducts that I can turn and tilt to send air wherever I need it.
@dvader32635 күн бұрын
That big low function center dash display in vehicles costs manufacturers maybe 50 dollars. A high functioning battery operated wireless tablet computer can be purchased for $200, more or less. They require no maintenance. High technology that is mass produced is cheap to manufacture. All of the technology in new vehicles isn't making them expensive. Dealer greed made them expensive. The greedy vehicle companies saw what the dealers were earning with add-ons and mark-ups, so they raised the MSRPs to crazy highs.
@teardowndan53645 күн бұрын
@@dvader3263 $50 would be at best the bare LCD. Add the touch screen, screen protector, PCB, housing, mounting hardware all in ruggedized automotive-grade components, the R&D effort to put the hardware and software together, enough headroom to cover in-warranty failures, support costs, etc., the bill goes up a fair amount vs similar throw-away tier Chinese tablets and phones. I was being a little hyperbolic with $1500 but the total amortized cost can certainly exceed $500 per unit due to these things being relatively low volume.
