Colin Chapman was questioned by police not long after his business partner, John DeLorean, was arrested in Los Angeles for selling cocaine to undercover DEA and FBI agents. Before he could be put before a jury, he was dead. And the conspiracies began.
But what was the scandal about? Let's have a look.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

Well, Ronald Biggs, one the conspirators of the Great Train Robbery of 1963, did indeed run away to Brazil and lived most of his life as a free man, as Brazil had no extradition treaty with the UK. The big difference is, well, Biggs was somewhat of a local celebrity being interviewed a few times for local televisions and famously "charging to dine" with famous people, his son was in a very famous band and he even was visited by Stanley Matthews.

I saw a Delorean when I was walking home from work by the Bolero in Wildwood, NJ and it's still one of the coolest cars I've ever seen, and I knew that it wasn't the fastest car I've ever seen, but still cool af (but seriously, a 2000 Chevrolet Venture minivan with a V6 is probably faster to 60 than the Delorean DMC-12) Edit: also John Delorean and Colin Chapman managed to finesse Margaret Thatcher for millions, so, they were absolute GOATs... also, the drug trafficking charges against John Delorean were total bs

Thanks for this, Aidan, it took me back to my teenage years! Weirdly, I remember pretty much everything about the Delorean "scam" side of things that you mentioned (though not the drugs. If pushed I'd have said he'd have been sent down for financial shenanigans in the USA), but I don't think I could have ever heard about the Chapman side of things because that wouldn't be the sort of thing to slip my mind. I remember the news breaking of him dying, and that it was of a heart attack, and there was some doubts regarding the future the team, but the majority of the news surrounding him was a bunch of retrospectives. And given that I'd been watching F1 (when possible - that's tv scheduling back then for you) for about 10 years (give or take), my interest was of the sporting variety. I have the vaguest notion of his company being involved in the design - that would most likely have been at the start of the hype regarding it being built in Belfast. On this side of the Irish Sea, it seemed like a hopeful venture which would benefit N Ireland, maybe bringing in other companies to the country. Because despite/because of all the awfulness of the time, we wanted N Ireland to be a peaceful success. Bear in mind I was 17 when Chapman died, so I wasn't as into watching the news as I might otherwise have been, but that was because of Thatcher, me growing up in a steelworking/mining area in Wales (Dad being a steelworker, we had our own views about her and her vicious hatred of heavy industries, especially in Wales). Our attention towards anything other than our own problems (and those of our neighbours'/union "brothers and sisters" around the country, of course) was often disrupted by yet more Tory dirty tricks, taking us straight back to our own problems. Like Kielty said about the mood in Belfast, the mood in at least half of the UK was much the same. The biggest memory I have of the scandal was laughing at how bad it made her and her ministers look! But no matter how hard I wrack my brains, I can't remember anything about Chapman's postmortem (possible) scandal. So thanks for telling this story! I'd really love to hear all the details from those involved now. It would make a great documentary ...

Team Lotus, and its associated companies were basically only kept afloat by Fred Bushell's financial shenanigans. Many stories about invoices and cash whizzing between TL, Lotus Cars and Lotus Components to minimise tax liabilities. With the DeLorean thing, Chapman had finally bitten off more than he could chew. Quite probably it was the stress of being found out, plus his prodigious upper and downer intake that killed him.

A major issue with the stainless steel body of the DeLorean was with the aesthetics of the metal, as the streaking stain marks from water on the body made the vehicle look shabby. One workaround that I saw to resolve the aesthetics of the stains on the stainless steel: Acid-etch the steel body, then put a coating of paint over the stainless steel. In one case that I saw in Silicon Valley (California) in the 1980s, the DeLorean was painted red to resemble a Ferrari. It looked great!

Didn't know about the Chapman connection, and neither do others here, it seems. I had heard whispers about drugs, but it seemed to me as if that was urban legend tacked on because of those letters FBI. The DeLorean car marks the difference in the generations in NI. Those over a certain age associate it with the financial collapse the scandal wrought on the region at a time when they really didn't need it, because DeLorean himself was one of the very few willing to invest here while the Troubles were still taking place as opposed to the big marketing push to get people to invest nowadays. Those my age and younger, of course, associate it with said movie franchise. A few years ago I was going to see Dara O'Briain live, and a comic book store near the theatre had a DeLorean parked outside that day, so loads of selfies were being taken with it. Someone who worked there was in the audience, so the car got discussed, and O'Briain did point out how funny it would have been to see the contrast. "Imagine all the young people standing around it going 'Woohoo, Back to the Future, yeah!', but then some poor old woman walks past and sees it and shouts 'I HATE that fucking car!', and confuses the hell out of them!"

OK, its still a good tale I'll admit, but you omitted the fact that the concept of the car was already sold to the investors waaaay before Chapman came on the scene. DeLorean had to get someone to engineer his concept for production and in the end only Porsche and Lotus were in the frame. Porsche wanted many many millions and several years to do it which wasn't a good sell to the DMC investors who - as investors do - wanted quick returns. Chapman sold the promise that Lotus (aka resourceful men in sheds) could do it in under 15 minutes for £5.50 (and a bar of chocolate) by pillaging Esprit tech and reverse engineering it to fit the basic Giugiaro shell, because hey, we're selling a dream here guys.
@BungleBare
@BungleBare 2 жыл бұрын
It was probably much more logical for DeLorean to choose Lotus over Porsche. Both companies were highly regarded, but Lotus had a proven history of producing low-volume glass fibre bodied cars* with a backbone chassis, using many components from volume manufacturers. Porsche produced monocoque sports cars with their own componentry, or bought in components from one volume manufacturer (VAG). Lotus were just a better fit, and far more likely to quickly bring a car like the DMC-12 to production. * The DMC-12 had stainless steel panels, but these were applied to glass fibre panels as a cosmetic measure. The car had much in common, materials-wise, with current Lotus models such as the Esprit.

For its time it wasn't a bad car. Nothing back then was brilliantly built or completely reliable, and no way does a Delorean handle worse than a 911 from the same era! It desperately needed development, but instead they were working on a 4 seater and trying but failing to turbocharge it. They didn't have enough money to get through the sales dying during a bad winter. An unopened management buyout proposal was on John's office desk when he was being entrapped by the FBI.

@BungleBare
@BungleBare 2 жыл бұрын
If he had faked his death, was he somehow still involved in keeping Team Lotus (his beloved F1 team) afloat? Once they hit the financial skids in the early ‘90s was that a sign that Colin’s involvement and/or money had run out? If so, could that be a pointer to the time he actually passed away? Having said all that, I don’t think he did fake his death. The general consensus in the motorsport press has consistently been that the stress of his “inventive” business dealings connected to DeLorean, his workaholic tendencies, and the worry about the fall-out from DeLorean’s downfall all culminated in a fatal heart attack.

It does touch upon Chapman’s consulting in regards to the DMC-12, but it also touches upon the aforementioned court cases, Both of which Delorean was found not guilty on. Could Chapman have pulled it off? I mean if Lord Lucan could just disappear 8 or so years prior to this then anything’s remotely possible. But I reckon even if he did, I don’t think he’d be around anyway, not with all the stuff he took back then. Great video on the other side of Chapman’s involvement in Delorean.
