My car wouldn't start cold without starting fluid or dumping gas in the throttle body. It took me 2 years to figure out it was the COOLANT TEMP SENSOR had only partially failed. The hot engine part was ok and hot starts were ok. When the coolant temp sensor totally quit the engine wouldn't run right at all. Cars run so lean of gas that the PCM not knowing the engine was cold would not give it enough gas to start. It never saw a cold indication. That's why just a tiny shot of gas or start fluid worked. Once it was hot there was enough to start, until it failed completely. The shops didn't want to work with it cuz it was 20 years old. All l did initially was run a piece of plastic tubing from inside the car out to a hole l drilled into the plastic air inlet right over the throttle body. I put a can of starting fluid in the drink holder and connected the plastic tube. Every cold start needed just a spit of fluid. A can lasted 6 mos. When it finally quit altogether l yanked the wire off the sensor and l made it back home. BTW, FYI my temp gauge in the dashboard worked fine. The dummies st GM put 2 sensors on my engine, 1 for the computer and a 2nd one for the dash guage.
