So much dead vegetable mass that it later became buried, subsumed and transformed into coal? Why didn't it rot and decompose? Did fungi not exist yet? Or is coal still being formed? How is this related to oil?

Theres afew theorys but one of the main ones is that the enzymes that breaks down all that biomass hadn't evolved yet lol

Iv'e considered the atmosphere may have been denser than it is now along with higher O2. Is there a marker for pressure or just another thing one can never know?

If the development of a hard shell opened up new environments, when did live birth develop? There are reptiles and fish that produce live birth, is this a leter development?
