A deck is shuffled and placed squared on the table. One of the spectators is invited to lean forwards and to cut a block of cards from the top of the pack and to turn the card faces towards himself so that he can see the card he has cut to. He is also invited to show the card to others around him.
The helper is then instructed to cut this pile of cards so that his selection becomes lost in the centre of his pile.
He is then invited to cut the packet of cards still on the table in half, place his cards onto the lower half, and then replace the cut away block thus trapping his selection somewhere in the deck’s centre. The pack is left squared on the table.
Due to the way the cards have been handled, the performer could have no way of knowing the name of the chosen card. In fact, to compound this, the deck itself is dropped back in its box and placed to one side.
The magician says he will now try to identify the name of the selected card. Without the helper speaking a single word, the magician is able to reveal the card that he freely chose!
