So true. The team was awful in his early years and when they started making the playoffs and doing well, he was easily the primary reason why. The high quality scoring chances against him were far above league norms. No Cup? Hard to win one without multiple stars. Hank had a year with Jagr at the beginning and a year and a half at most with Panarin at the end. The guy should be a first ballot hall of famer.

I got a lot of great memories from the time back in Gothenburg and during Frolundas juniors program that makes him very special to me. He's the greatest player to ever wear the Frolunda Indians jersey and the greatest Swedish goalie of all-time. Him retiring is sort of the end of an era for me. He's an obvious HoFer, probably first ballet.
@skeppartorsk3 жыл бұрын
I never understood him going as late as he did in the draft based on how amazing his play was in Frölunda. The fact that New York only drafted him at all because they ran out of players on their draft list and one scout was like "What about this guy?". Makes it even more insane.
@ZyXxOmAn3 жыл бұрын
Funny that both the Lundqvist twins are the greatest Frölunda players ever
@swedreamhack53083 жыл бұрын
@@skeppartorsk I think a lot of it has to do with timing and exposure. It's very different to those who see the player every day, in practice etc compared to scouts who's seen a handful of games, listen to trainer's opinions while reading a stats sheet. Sweden went with Fransson and Asplund for the world juniors and that could play a part in it. He was Frolunda's 4th and 5th SHL option in 99/00 (not even a guaranteed backup if Jablonski or Brunetta would get injured at the same time), which I think made him appear very far down in the system. We also had several promising goaltenders that year, Liv, Tellquist, Ersberg to name a few that was arguably on the same level. So I guess for the people watching from a distance he could have looked like a reach when looking globally for a goalie. Imo, he wasn't playing his best hockey until late in 01/02 and that's 2 years past his draft year. NYR was very lucky.

Zero question HOF'er. Infinite class on and off the ice. Carried some middling Rangers teams through consistent deep playoff runs. The 2014 team deserved better in the SCF (particularly from an officiating standpoint), as did Lundqvist. The 2015 Rangers were a juggernaut that season, and that was his best shot...but they somehow came up short in game 7 ECF (I think his only game 7 loss) after destroying Tampa in game 6. My first favorite Ranger goaltender was Eddie Giacomin. Loved watching him. Then along came John Davidson. I still wish him well in all of his endeavors. I was an instant fan when he was doing color for MSG. Next was Beezer. Great fun there until that snot-nosed kid Richter moved in. I was glad he did. Didn't take him long to prove himself. As Richter aged it looked like a revolving door for awhile until Henrik arrived. From then on we were solid and didn't worry about musical goalies. I am so glad he did not play for the Caps. That would have hurt. I hope to see your number in the rafters King Henrik. Well earned.

Henrik was the heart and soul of this team for so many years, and really connected with NYC. It's my sincerest hope the Rangers hire him for a front office position, maybe director of community relations or something similar

I remember playing NHL 04 and you could play the Swedish league in that version and I remember Lundquist being a good goalie in that version of the game. So when he came into the league, I knew he could do well. What a career! Glad he took care of himself first and didn't force himself to come back

One of those great players that got their career shortend by lockout. He was a pain in the ass in frolunda 03,04 and was so prominent for shl in those years. A stand out and I have never seen a goalie so dominant in shl before. He was already nhl ready in 03

Hell of a career with a disappointing end. I love him so much, he's been a keystone in the bridge of professional sports in the tri-state area. I hope he can find a new avenue to channel his love and dedication to hockey that'll give him more happy years.

I always remember King Henrick never getting great goal support from the Rangers. Not even good goal support. I think King Henrick played on a lot of mediocre Ranger teams over the years. I always wished he played on a better team. I pray that his health is good. A great goaltender, ambassador and of course very photogenic. Best suits in all of the NHL. Long live the KING!
