The song stardust was originally made by my great-great-grandfather Hoagy Carmichael in 1927 and later he added lyrics in 1929. This being found has finally put my grandfather in a sound that I really wanted to hear him in, a nostalgic and beautiful sound. Thank u for ur work and keep it up.

Sometimes I wonder why I spend A lonely night dreaming of a song The melody haunts my reverie And I am once again with you When our love was new And each kiss an inspiration But that was long ago Now my consolation is in the stardust of a song Beside a garden wall When stars are bright You are in my arms The nightingale tells his fairy tale Of paradise where roses grew Though I dream in vain In my heart it will remain My stardust melody The memory of love's refrain

I picture an empty metropolis, not a single soul, left exactly as it was in the 1940s, without a single piece of dust or a crack in the concrete, the Ford coupes sitting in the street untouched. Towering Art Deco skyscrapers loom over, as this song emanates from an unknown place, like a speaker in the heavens. It's a haunting but beautiful scene. This also reminds me of the sleepovers I had when I was a kid at my grandma's house. She watched country shows at night, and would often fall asleep to them. I woke up around midnight and heard a voice echoing throughout the home. I walked into the family room, the only light being the TV. In the light I could see my grandparents fast asleep on their chairs. The TV played a mournful song sung by a long-dead country star, on a 70s stage to an empty audience. The speakers seemed to have lost their clarity and the song dragged on in long reverberations. The only other thing I could see was the moon and stars through their ginormous picture window, beaming down onto this sleepy place. I returned to my bed down the hall, after making sure to turn off the TV. Now the song played in my mind, and was my lullaby that deep night.

The first (shellac, 78rpm) record my grandpa gave me was the Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra version of Stardust. I listened to it bright-eyed and eagle-eared, through the surface noise and hum of the old tube amp in the 'classroom' record player, enjoying every second of it. A genuine connection between his generation and mine. We both loved making things, antiques, records, music... all kinds of things like that; passions he helped instill in my heart. He passed recently. The last few times I saw him he couldn't even form a coherent sentence. He could barely hold a glass to take a drink. The last words he said to me, specifically, were "I missed my ride." We had been working on his (now my) 1964 Ford with the main goal of taking him for one last ride, and indeed we weren't able to finish the project in time. He was saying it as a joke, with a smile, but... it still cuts me to think of it. I'm grateful I was at least able to get the car running for him though, so there's that consolation. Anyway... Hearing this take of this song, so distant sounding, coupled with the memories and thoughts and experiences I've had recently... just hits me in a way that no other song has yet.
