Chess openings connect to the player's style and personality. You reflect your persona in your opening choices. Emotions play a big role in this choice. While you watch this video, please look inside yourself and see whether the Caro-Kann defense touches your spirit and excites you to take this opening.
In this series, I aim to tell you the spirit and the philosophy of different openings to make it easier for you to decide whether that opening fits your chess style.
Please let me know how you like this video and give me feedback for my future videos. For example, do you want to see longer videos or do you prefer this short format with around 20 minutes?

I have been playing Caro-Kann for 17 years and it suits my style very well. Despite the fact that there are some subtleties in some specific variations that requires proper understanding and ability to handle the position with high accuracy, once you learn and master it, you can feel so much confident even against higher rated opponents. Thanks a lot for your inspiring content and guidance Dr. Can, keep up the good work 🙏🏻💪🏻

Nice video idea. I've taken up the French so I get a lot of these positions, and absolutely love them. It also occurs to me seeing this, one of your quiz positions from another video that I didn't understand must have come from a classical Caro.

What I really liked about this video is it gave me a better idea of how to relate to an opening based on middle and endgames that make sense to me. I don't think I'm at the place where I know what's best for me and so I'm really looking forward to more in this series. Subscribed and thanks!

I love the Caro-Kann, and when I played the Sicilian it I loved it too. At my level you get tactical middlegames no matter what you play, although I am talking about speed chess. One opening that always looked too alien to consider is the Grunfeld, but now my philosophy is to play everything and just learn learn learn. Soon I'll be giving up the Caro-Kann for 1...e5, and the London for 1.e4. I haven't played the open games since I was a beginner, and there is so much to learn from them.

Caro Kann player here, I switch from French to CaroKann defense as there is some overlaps and easier to play without dealing with the bad bishop. As beginner, it's hard to find my style but I can tell that CaroKann seems not to require tremendous theory knowledge at my level. The general ideas and plans you described here is very helpful to improve my games, really like this series as well! Thank you Doc!

4 29 portion, you were luck to bring the light bishop back. For most push the epawn thus leaving the light bishop un able to come and pressure the queen

Really nice video 👌 I’m also a Caro Kann Player and you’ve put everything important here in a very compact video 😃 Unfortunately there is no CK for White haha but would love to see the Queens Gambit ✌️ Is there any hidden resource to find this middle game plans or are master games the one and only?

Glad it was helpful! Recently, Chessable opening courses also give those typical middlegame plans but they are still rare. Chess structures by Rios is a good book for this purpose, but it may not be suitable for beginners.

Thanks for this video. I play the scotch gambit and the caro kann and the two styles are so different. Scotch gambit has so much attacking oressure while caro feels like grinding out a pawn advantage. I think I struggle in getting to these endgames. What would be a more active black defense to pair with my scotch gambit? Either that or maybe I start pairing the London with the caro…

Thanks for sharing this! I would say it depends on several factors, such as your chess style and how much time you have for studying openings. If you enjoy dynamic positions involving pawn sacrifices, then you can switch Caro to Sicilian :) London is a solid choice and the pawn structure resembles the Caro, so I can't have much complaints there either.

@@Dr.CansClinic thanks for the reply! I have played chess for about 10 months and I’m sure I put way too much focus on opening study and not enough on other aspects, so I think I’d be open to picking up a new response to e4 as black. That said, I’ve always strayed away from the Sicilian as there are so many variations and I’ve been told it’s so theory heavy. Personally, even though I suck at it, I would love to improve as a caro kann player because squeezing out a win by having a +1 advantage on the board seems like “good chess”. I’m just 100% sure that in games I lose I have that advantage and squander the position at some point.

I am a beginner and still learning, but I deliberately learned C-K because at the time I had no real understanding about what positional thinking was, pawn structures, breaks, etc. and playing C-K gave me some practical experience. I think I prefer to be a tactical player (currently learning KiD and accelerated dragon) but the lessons from C-K were invaluable. (also, what do you do against the Tal variation?)
