It was the ORIGINAL power ballad. They invented the genre. It was quite controversial with their fans at the time. They even received some hate mail about it. If you get a chance, look for Tony Peluso's interview about this song.

I remember all the hype about that, Tom. It was funny, but a testament to Richard Carpenter's genius as a composer. I remember seeing him in an interview many moons ago about this very subject. He said even the guitarist, Tony Peluso, wanted to lay down a much "softer" solo, but Richard said, "No! That's exactly what I want! Let it rip!" I'm paraphrasing, of course, but you're right, people were blown away! :)

This was supposedly one of the first if not the first “power ballad” with that insane (at the time) fuzz guitar solo. For all the flack Richard gets at times, his arrangements were solid. In average or below average hands this kind of experimentation would sound like 💩
@steveanderson6180
@steveanderson6180 4 жыл бұрын
Another example of why it was "The Carpenters". Look a few years farther back and you can find "The Dick Carpenter Trio" with Karen on drums. Tonu Peluso said he took credit for being there and playing that solo, but was adamant that it was all Richard. I don't remember which concert it was, but there is a live concert version on KZbin that must have been immediately after the release. Tony looks really nervous, taking a deep breath and looking at Richard and Karen for courage. I think he was half ready for boos and flying tomatoes. I was 10 or 11 when this came out my mother and would talk about music, what she liked and what I liked and what we liked in common, etc. She was also definitely a fan of The Carpenters.

From Richard Carpenter, up until then no artist included a fuzz guitar solo prominent in the recording. You have pop ballad, lush vocals, string orchestra juxtaposed against those elements. John Bettis said that it hadn't been done before, so Richard Carpenter may have introduced the power ballad with this in 1972

Her voice is pure lovely. One if the things that makes the Caroenters songs so so so beautiful, is 1. Her voice, best female voice ever. 2. Her pitch, her range; so, she goes from low to high in one sentence, or two sentences, and the human mind is keyed to react to that. 3. The harmonies and arrangement. 4. These songs obviously mean something to her and them. So there is heartfelt feeling to the lyrics, and how they are sung. 5. The songs deal with melancholia, loneliness, despair, struggle, etc. And because we all experience these things, it's so easy to relate to these issues, so it touches our hearts. All this, and more, makes the songs just... brilliant. I've never heard a female voice like this, ever. Their songs are timeless.

Thanks for another great Carpenters reaction video. If you want to hear more of Karen's sensational interpretative skills you should definitely check out "A song for you". The Carpenters had a jazz background and this is showcased in quite a few tracks. The most popular is probably their sublime version of "This Masquerade" which showcases Karen's velvety vocals and Richard's masterful piano playing. There were some country-themed songs among the Carpenters tracks ("Two sides" is particularly lovely). Karen dabbled in disco on her solo album (check "My body keeps changing my mind"). Really, there are so many fine tracks to choose from.

Ahh, and a "Japan viewer" would be a Carpenters connoisseur, too... ;-)

Hi Dereck glad to see your enjoying this masterpiece. You may want to listen to a quad version of this which is on youtube the quality is outstanding. For someone like myself that was 14 years old when this came out the production made become a audio engineer from then on.

Hurting Each Other and We've Only Just Begun have to me my favourites of the Carpenters. You're right she just has a voice that you just close your eyes and let it breath life into you.

I think Tony Pelusos interacting guitar made this song even more powerful...can't see anyone reacting in a negative way to it. Also their harmonies as backdrop, can't beat it. I could play their music all day long, no problems. Sadly tho Tony Peluso is no longer with us either. Maybe he is jamming in heaven with Karen, that would be great to know.

Wonderful song. I think the guitar totally compliments the song, it's unexpected but it works x

I remember so many people were offended by the fuzz guitar back in the day. They said The Carpenters were not rock! What a stupid reaction! I loved The Carpenters, but their ending is too sad for me!
