The Cars are an iconic late 70s early 80s band. If you grew up in this era, you couldn't listen to the radio for 30 min without hearing a Cars song. Truly an amazing underrated band.

When people ask me why 1984 is the perfect year for pop music, I just list down some of the albums released that year: 1984 by Van Hallen, HEartbeat City, the most popular album of The Cars, Purple Rain by Prince, Footlose original soundtrack, Born in the USA by the boss Bruce, Soprts by Huey Lewis and the News, The Smiths, debut album by the mythic band, Ride the Lightning by Metallica, Diamond Life the glorious debut album by SADE, Private Dancer, Tina Turner's gorgeous come back album, The Unforgetable Fire by U2, Make it Big, the album that made Wham! a global hit, Grace Under Pressure, iconic album by Rush, RECKLESS the album that turned Bryan Adams from rock singer to rock superstar, Building the Perfect Beast, Don Henley solo master piece, Like a Virgin, Madonna from teenagers' sensation to pop icon, Run-DMC debut album, Bon Jovi debut album........... Any wonder why 1984 is a unique year in music history?

This was the first Cars album which did NOT feature: Roy Thomas Baker [a.k.a.: R.T.B.] in the Producer's chair [You would (and SHOULD!) recognize R.T.B.'s name from many, many albums of the 1970s, but, particularly: QUEEN's biggest albums! [Yes. R.T.B.is the guy who helped Queen get "Bohemian Rhapsody" down-just for example!]. -Although, I.M.O., the Panorama album (BRILLIANT!) was, really, MOSTLY Produced by The Cars, themselves (even if not "listed in the credits" as so). R.T.B. played less-of-a-role in that one AND it [that album] was a bit like an "f- you": to their label (-Listen to the opening cut! ...after listening to the close of: Candy-O!), and, even: fans who "expected a certain, 'given' thing" from the band ...and a demonstration of how intriguing, well-written and, still, quirky, "new wave" and 'synth-oriented" music COULD be! --When it was, effectively, "A new thing"/"an unknown quantity" (in the ears of the major labels of the day/most figures in the music business 🙄🤦🤦who controlled money and rights, at that time!😡)!]. Anyhow: for Heartbeat City, The Cars "switched to," arguably, "the biggest producer of" the 1980s (one of the hugest names!): "Mutt" Lange [who had done: Def Leppard, AC/DC (He produced their come-back album: Back In Black) and, just: tons-and-tons of other '80s stuff!!!] (Robert John "Mutt" Lange -British Producer, originally from: South Africa.). Nigel Green was the recording engineer on Heartbeat City and Mike Shipley, the mixing engineer (He mixed it) and, both, did a spectacular job in their roles. 🤘🤘 -Personally: I LIKED this album, but (perhaps BECAUSE of its massive success🤷‍♀🤷), I never "fell deeply in love" with it. That's NOT to say: it isn't good, however: it doesn't measure-up to the first trio of Cars albums [The Cars, Candy-O, Panorama] and ...it would be difficult -if not 'impossible'!- to compare it to its, more "pop-rock oriented," (but quite different, stimuli) predecessor: Shake It Up. Heartbeat City IS a classic ...but I can't be sure [don't believe that it does] that it deserves its "high echelon" of notice and praise, really. The Cars, Candy-O & Panorama are, EASILY, FAR superior to this album. [...Just, on song-writing, alone!!🤘🤘] ...but this album isn't "trash," either (which is a very good thing👍). "Different strokes..." I guess🤷🤷 (as the saying goes.🤷🤔)...

This is such a great changeup track when you listen to it within the context of the Heartbeat City album. You guys hit it just right... coming home after a long day, windows down, turned up, total chill and mood tune, maybe reminiscing about a past relationship back in high school. Really can't go wrong with The Cars, as you guys have found as you've bounced from the early stuff in the 70s to the later in the 80s.
