I have always associated the early Cars songs with 1981 because that's when I would listen to them. But they are from the late 1970's albeit they sound more like early 1980's songs to me.

Good ear Tibbz1313. Good music always has the chance of eternal listening, but great bands with an even greater catalogue will never die. Long live The Cars! Only thing you did miss was the times and what was going on out there and then wham, these guys, just busted, I mean just busted out there on the the scene. Their rise was fast. Their sound was made now, and it was a rocket for the moon. The genius of Ric Ocasek and bringing Ben Orr to the table and assembling great musicians especially my fav, Elliot Easton, hands down, one of the most noted solo guitar artist of all time, was phenomenal. Ya either loved em or liked em. I can’t remember anyone ever saying, I don’t like the cars. Still, as I listen today I pick up on new things and am more in awe than even back then. RIP RIC and BEN

It's a euphemism for feeling strong empathy for someone. To feel for a person so acutely that you feel their pain as your own; as in, you figuratively bleed for them. In the song he has found someone to share that with. "So bleed me" means he wants them to open up and share their deepest secrets and pains with him.
