I don't think many people give Greg Hawkes enough credit for how hard he works during the live shows with his hands having to go from one place to another at precisely the right time. His contribution is a major part of what made The Cars sound both contemporary and unique.

What we can say about such a band. They were magic. Everyone of them was so special and unique. But, however, my favorite singer ever was Benjamin Orr. He was a darling of all women who have special taste in music. We will never forget him. What I regret is that I never had a chance to see them live.

This was their last tour,and behind the scenes all was not well. Ben was traveling by himself on a bus,and they all probably knew they would be breaking up. I feel sorry for Ben who didn’t want the group to end. Ocasek just ended it without a thought.
@alex_darsen
@alex_darsen Жыл бұрын
@@April-pw5ub from what I had read, Ric ended it because Door to Door did not do well, and they were no longer playing to full houses. Music and tastes were changing at that time. I’m sure band tension had something to do with it too. They broke things off mid-tour. I had tickets for the L.A. show, and remember the moment the dj on KROQ came on and said The Cars broke up. That would have been the 3rd time I would have seen them, but it didn’t happen.

I've been watching videos of these guys live for the past 22 hours. God, they played perfectly. Complete professional. I clearly see why all the ladies loved/love Benjamin. Smooth as silk. I have noticed this crowd is by far been giving the loudest ovations since I began watching. Probably 18 different shows. This proves that the fans in Philadelphia are the best in the country. I noticed a band, famous for not responding to the crowd at all, has been here at this show. My city is giving it to them !!! Elliott's guitar volume has been raised too because of it. A song later yhey taised all vocals and their instruments. Welcome to Philadelphia !!!

One definition of a professional is in laymans terms, doing something that usually takes years of practice, that few if any can do better than most if not all and making it look easy. Thats an amazing feat to accomplish as an individual. But to do it with another in almost perfect sync, much less 4 others is phenominal. Then to do it in an artistic realm with all originality, that touches and/or effects, inflences, inspires, motivates, enlightens, etc. etc.,others, is. . . . . . . . . . . Well?. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Beyond words to describe it. These guys are that.

Watching the final tour videos makes me sad…you can feel the tensions within the band. Ben and Ric were not speaking, Ric stated in a 2011 interview that Ben had been drinking heavily during this time. I can see the physical difference in Ben. He still did an amazing job but he’s not “there”. I love this band so much and it just makes me sad they didn’t part on the best of terms😢 and you can’t help but notice that the camera wasn’t giving Ben enough love…I believe that was intentional in Ric’s part ☹️

The Cars like the Beatles were constantly evolving. In the early days their harmonies were a bit spotty at times. By the time of this concert they were perfect and their musicianship was fantastic and tight. Easton was their Beatle George with perfect melodic guitar solos. Two great lead singers just like the Beatles too. And both terrific guitarists. Rick playing those hard ripping chords like John and Ben super on the bass and the poster boy like McCartney. And the secret weapon Hawke on the keys. What a truly great and unique sounding band. So sad Ben passed so young and Rick didn't have a very long life either. I guess Billy Joel was right about only the good die young. RIP Ben and Rick

The Beatles had four singers, albeit Ringo was not my favorite. George Harrison however, you did a serious injustice to. He was great singer and songwriter. Many hits were his. I am a huge Beatles and Cars fan and I see more dissimilarity’s than similarities. But, that’s my opinion.

@@pat6601 Not sure how I did any injustice to George in my comments. Perhaps you thought he was one the Beatles lead singers? He wasn't. That I compared him to Easton as a guitarist? Easton was just as good a guitarist as George in my opinion. Of course George was a better song writer. As far as not seeing the similarities between the bands, I guess your focus is their differences. Which there are some too.

At 51:46, the video cuts away for a second to still shot of Philadelphia Flyers player Mark Howe (son of Hall of Famer Gordie Howe) for no apparent reason. Since this was shot at the Spectrum where the Flyers played their home games, I can only imagine that this was being shot by the same production crew that broadcasts the games and the director switched to a still rather than another camera. The audio never interrupts. I have never been able to figure out what this was filmed for. It was never officially released by the band. Maybe the band didn't feel it was worthy of releasing.

Some footage of this show was used in a live video compilation released in the 2000s on DVD. Everything You Say from this show was also released as a bonus track a couple years ago

The Cars will always a place in my heart and I thank the band who opened the doors to playing bass in two bands in Syracuse and radio broadcasting in several cities in NYS. May the memories of Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr be blessings to us all. Rabbi Derrick Whitt Syracuse NY

This concert is really weird especially compared to the 1984/ 85 Texas concert that was so great. What a difference and where the guys were only a few years before, happy and together. Why is it so dark and the music is very loud overshadowing the singing. Ben looks very unhappy but always the professional. We know the ending after this and it's just too sad!!

I agree with you, Mary. Huge difference since 84/ 85. Aside from a few smiles near the beginning, Ben does not look happy throughout this concert. Such a sad ending to one of the best bands ever.

Love this, best live video ive seen of them. Bands tight and the sound guy has the mix right. On some of the live videos i have watched the keys are WAY too loud. THis is just right. Nice opener, my friend from HS made me a mixed tape that had a bunch of cars songs that i had already heard, but i really started to like them after she gave me that tape. Good stuff :-)

Elliot has such an original, fresh, fluid, and quirky style. just leaves you shaking your head going "damn that was so perfect". He and other players that have that same ability have always inspired me - Neil Geraldo and Jim Mankey spring to mind. Thanks for posting this

Saw them in Boston for Candy-O then in Long Beach for Panorama. Always great live. Never understood why D2D was not as well received. It is one of my favorites, great moments like Fine Line, Strap Me In, Wound Up On You.

I saw The Cars on their home turf sometime between the mid-to-late 1980s at the legendary, exquisitely un-airconditioned old Boston Garden. I sat about 1/3 of the way back from downstage center. During my 15 or so concert-going years leading up to that Cars show, I'd already seen a great many live concerts in venues large & small, but that Cars show at the Garden was quite possibly the single loudest one of them all -- before or since. Love loud concerts, bass notes radiating my body, but this one was a bit unnerving, even for my (then) well-adapted ears. There's no denying The Cars were all accomplished musicians and second to none in their songwriting and technical prowess, but aside from ear-torching volume there wasn't much variation from their studio output when playing live. Collectively, they had a very cool, charismatic stage presence, particularly Ocasek & Orr, at times spilling over to a high cheek-boned, dispassionate, mannequin-cool. Nevertheless, their catalogue remains the Holy Grail of 1980s North American New Wave, yet their music, in both composition and delivery, continues traveling quite well some 40+ years on.

I even enjoyed Ric's solo work as well ! Saw them many times in the 80's & the reunion tour when they got snowed in at Lake Tahoe & had to cancel the San Francisco show the following day I wish I remember the year that happened. Benjamin was the 1st to pass on I believe . Great Great band with its own unique sound of the times. I so miss them & crank their tunes from time to time in 2024. What they call music today is an absolute joke ! Rock On ! R.I.P fellas ! Never forget !

Thank you for these videos! I love the Cars so much they were all so talented (Ben was my fave though ) I was 16 that year but I never got to go to concerts until I was 30! Wish so much I could have seen these guys at their highest. They were fixing to split here and you could tell it was affecting them especially poor Ben. OK it didn't really affect Greg apparantly lol. The older vids they had so much fun together. Rest in Peace Benjamin and Ric.

It's a pity they didn't use film for this concert instead of video taping it, too much of the show is in darkness that tape can't capture well.

Maybe it was a fan with a huge VHS camera. They were huge then and expensive. I lived through the 80's as a kid and teen. I got my first pair of corrective glasses in 1987, for distance only, now I have bifocals for near and far.
