Hi. I entirely see both sides. And I own BOTH. you can tell a doll that's been artist done to a factory done. And the question I keep asking that NOBODY will answer, is some of my "art" dolls don't have the C.O.A. so does that mean they are fake? And my main reason for the replica or knockoffs or whatever ya wanna call em is that I have SEVERE CPTSD ... I almost always have one in my arms to keep me calm and my blood pressure down. There are days I cry A LOT and I'm terrified I will ruin the beautiful artwork on an authentic baby. So on those days I do use the others. I understand the doll show thing to a point, I mean I wouldn't take a replica to an authentic doll show but just because I own them don't mean I wouldn't like to go and purchase an authentic and see them in real time because pictures just don't do them justice.

I totally agree with this. I personally would never purchase an Authentic Art doll sight unseen. I just wouldn’t, I’ve watched too many box openings where the recipient was totally let down. I WOULD purchase from a doll show tho. If I could see and perhaps hold the doll, I would be more apt to pay what it’s worth. I also use my dolls for comfort and to keep my creativity flowing with staging and photographing them. I do get why people want to support the Artist but I don’t get why they insist everyone else has to. I think it was a very poor business choice to bar people from the show and if I was a vendor I would be very upset with the organizers. Business is down everywhere not just the reborn doll biz and to actively push paying customers away (for your personal beliefs) is detrimental to all the vendors there.

Also just want to mention Bountiful Baby was able to fight their lawsuit with minimal fees due to having multiple relatives that are lawyers who represent them and do all the legal footwork for their business for FREE. Small sculpting artist don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight legal battles overseas with multiple companies. Like Bonnie said, she would lose her home and all that she owns fighting & wouldn’t get anywhere with all the new sites popping up daily on the internet. She can never stop them all. This was per a statement on her Facebook account. These sculptors are people are they not? If this is not about dolls & it’s about people, then what about the sculptors & artists? Are they not people too?

Then why don't sculptors band together and Bountiful Baby help out other sculptors? I feel for the sculptors, I truly do along with others ppl who have made products and sold them without making sure the legal work was properly done in EVERY country... That's y BB were able to also fight their case... they had solid grounds to stand on and just had to go through the motions... but yes they have family members who are lawyers... smaller sculptors don't have the time or $$$$ to do these things... but its an evil that won't go away... Big companies that do have the time and $$$ don't throw their $$$ into fighting counterfeit products either... it's up to the consumer in the end... which is y many businesses, albeit small end up closing down...

@@4evaMrsBrentWeston1 Bountiful Baby is not a BIG company, they are a small family business owned by a husband and wife. Why would they put money out & take on everyone else's problems? That's not in their best interest to get involved in other peoples law suits. Like I said, they just happen to be a family with law degrees on their side, they did the footwork and did not have to shell out their life savings or mortgage their homes and lose their business trying to fight it. They essentially did not have to pay the legal fees required on the large scale that would normally be necessary.

This is a great question! I'm new to painting and want to produce dolls that are affordable, can be toys for children and adults to be played with and handled a lot so buy blank dolls/kits from Amazon etc and paint and root them myself .... so technically they are not "factory dolls" and will make them artist painted dolls but not high end

I doubt ppl are dying from cancer b/c of just counterfeit/legit reborn dolls beiing made in China... everything processed by humans is toxic... even down to the food we eat... so there really is no escape... its all just hypocrisy from God's standpoint... ;)

I understand both sides, and everyone is allowed to buy what they wish, it is a free world. For me, I do not mind the cheaper replica alternatives. I'm on disability income, which is very limited, but it does not mean those of us with low income have to live under a rock and not have a fun hobby or something to ease our pain and discomforts. My dolls help me keep my mind off pain and chronic illness. I have both authentic dolls from when I was able to afford them, and also replicas, which are cheaper and more affordable for me now, and using the replicas every day, helps keep my authentic from getting ruined. But its my hobby, my world and I shouldn't be judged for what I can afford and choose to buy. I don't judge those who buy authentic.....its a to each their own thing and everyone can do the hobby how they choose. But someone's income shouldn't be the factor that tells them they can or can't do something, sometimes you just have to live in your means and choose cheaper alternatives. Just because our incomes are lower, doesn't mean we just sit around and do nothing because someone says you have to buy the more expensive alternatives. There are things in this world for all levels of people.

I love the way you presented this topic/debate. I absolutely agree that emotions run high with this issue and it's nice to see a video like this without attacks, nastiness, name calling and character assassinations. Well done! I've been a reborn doll collector since 2011, and an artist since 2013. I've only ever painted and sold authentic (I don't paint much anymore for personal reasons) and, up until recently, only collected authentic. I was vocal about being "authentic only", but respectfully, the same as you've been here. I did make a video on the fakes/counterfeits, etc. if you'd be interested in my points of view on this issue and why it has changed. You've made some good points here. I think, unfortunately, there are deeper issues here on KZbin and between these parties that have contributed to some people deciding to purchase counterfeits. I did so simply because I was curious. I would not call myself a "counterfeit supporter", nor do I plan on buying any more. I think, honestly, seeing how much more realistic the counterfeit dolls are now is eye-opening and something that we, as artists and sculptors, need to be aware of. It is clearly having an effect on sales of authentic dolls, and as I have already said, I don't see the counterfeits going away at this point. I think there is a difference between artists and collectors who purchase a few counterfeits to see what they are actually like (or, in the case of artists who make their living painting these dolls to see what they are up against in terms of competition) and being a "counterfeit supporter". It's sort of akin to calling someone who smoked m4riju4n4 once or twice a "drug dealer". I also don't think it's fair to brand someone who has never done drugs that way just because their friends do (or have done so in the past). There are other points I could make here but it's on my wall and in my video if you're interested. Thank you again for how respectfully and thoughtfully you presented this topic and also for addressing that the doxing, "naming & shaming" and other behaviors are out of line, from either side. That is a much needed reminder for some folks.

I’m an artist. (Not a doll artist) So I think I can speak to this personally. For me- reborn dolls goes beyond the scope of normal doll artistry. There is a mental health element that shouldn’t be ignored. You want that doll for a reason whatever that reason is from person to person. So you have artist that are making dolls in a space that is dominated by a need that is deeper than just having a doll for the sake of having a doll. So when you factor in the price point. I think that lends to a question. If this is a mental health resource- what are people who cannot afford higher end dolls- supposed to do?and what can the solution or alternative be. To getting a more affordable - knock off doll. For instance - I offer prints of my art- for a much lower price. So that people that cannot afford an original- but not all artist do that. And it’s at each artist discretion to choose that. I’ve also had- art stolen from larger entities. So I do understand that element of it. I just think with the mental health aspect of it. What are the reborn dolls artist expecting. Making dolls for thousands of dollars. I’ve seen some channels on here of people in many different walks of life- who are thriving or maybe surviving because- they have their dolls. What is the middle ground? A separation down the middle events inclusive for all and then elite collections to their own ?

When it comes to generic foods & products, the original product can be trademarked for up to 10 yrs in the US, Pharmaceuticals 7 yrs, then once the trademark expires then it’s anyone’s game. Generic food & meds etc. are not stolen or copied goods. A good comparison of replica doll kits would be pirated movies & music. If I was copying or stealing parts of a Taylor Swift song, same thing. What if I took a Stephen King book, took the cover off put a new cover on it with my name & art on the front but kept the pages within, with the same story and claimed this as my own? Stolen art is not the same as generic Oreo cookies or soda. The purchase of pirated works of art, such as movies & music are illegal that is why there is an FBI warning at the beginning of every DVD. It’s stolen art. It’s illegal to make it, it’s illegal to buy it. Also it’s not just China, these kits are being illegally reproduced in Germany & Spain too. The only reason why you are able to buy these replicas, is because they not being sold to you through US companies, they are being sold to you directly from Chinese companies like TEMU, Ali Express, SHEIN etc. its directly mailed to you from China. Bonnie Brown has had more work stolen from her and she did copyright each doll kit, it’s on the neck of every kit I have ever painted. She also trademarked her name legally “ The Bonnie Brown Collection TM “ I’m not saying that every artist has done everything to protect their work, but ppl still knowingly buy the knockoffs, even when they can afford the originals, knowing what’s happening to the artists, knowing that they did not give permission to copy. Why not buy other dolls from legit US companies that give credit to the artists and pay them for their work? Why not Ashton Drake or Paradise Galleries? If you come to the dolly world and you don’t know, that’s a different story. I’m not okay with ppl bulling children or new collectors that have no idea, but why do collectors that understand & can afford legit reborns & manufactured dolls still buy the replicas and promote them? Legit question, I think it really confuses the pro-authentic side. No hate here & not trying to sway anyone on their stance. 💗

There is no right for ANYONE TO BULLY ANYONE!!! Whether new/old collector, young or old... get that part right. Stop using the emotion of a sculptors work to give you permission to berate ppl who buy counterfeit... b/c I tell you the legal ramifications that would come if someone committed suicide over someone bullying over a reborn doll is huge... and something police would take on board... then that person is going to jail for up to 10 years for manslaughter, they better not cry foul... that's where the moral dilemma does come into play... Business is business, count the cost to see whether it's worth it... be humble and mature and step away if you know personally its not a game u want to play... b/c business in the business world is cutthroat. Attacking consumers and not the suppliers is morally deficient in itself!!!

Here is a reason I feel people may get stuck on this issue, at least as far as China producing both legit and counterfeit kits (I don’t know anything about other countries and their factory conditions). Even in factories that are authorized to produce the authorized sculpts, the conditions for those workers can be horrendous. The workers are paid incredibly low wages, which cuts down costs for businesses sending their work there. China does not have the labor laws that exist in the US. These workers will be worked hours we can’t fathom here. I read a book a while back titled “ How Luxury Lost Its Luster”- basically documents how over time even very fine designer brands have kind of sold out to producing in China to save money. I will have to go back through to get the exact passages- but there is documentation of workers producing legit products keeling over and even dying from being overworked. And these are people just trying to feed their families. As I’m sure those in factories producing non licensed products are. A big question for me is: if we’re sending our business over there to be produced, what does “authentic” really even mean? With everything going on in this community, I think it’s worth delving into. And again, I’m referring to the authentic kits that are produced in China. I don’t know about other countries and their factories.
@comfortandjoys
@comfortandjoys 5 ай бұрын
Good point. The authentic kits and the fake kits are most likely made in the same factories by the same overworked & underpaid workers, so Authentic just refers to Artists getting paid, it pretty much comes down to money.

Very good video! The problem is that nobody was planning on bringing a replica to any doll show. So I have a big problem with someone being bullied because they bought a doll on Temu before they bought an artist doll and they are now banned from bringing that AUTHENTIC doll to a show. It’s about people, not dolls, and the shaming of people who collect both is just so unfair and sickening. If someone would like to buy me an artist doll so I don’t buy one on Amazon, please do so! I’d welcome that gift! Until then, nobody has a right to police what we spend our hard earned money on. I doubt a doll on Temu is any more toxic than an Ashton Drake doll that is ALSO made in China.

No one is policing what you buy. But you may not be accepted in certain groups or shows with counterfeit dolls. Just like certain restaurants have dress codes or clubs have membership fees that have to be paid before you can enjoy the facilities. I feel like the counterfeits hurt the hobby as a whole so I fully support only buying authentic sculpts. No one should have to buy you an authentic reborn. Either you can afford it or you can’t. There are plenty of affordable options . But I can’t afford a Louis Vuitton purse. So I don’t get one. I don’t buy a knock off. I just get a different kind of purse. You can get an Ashton Drake or a second hand reborn and no one would care. It’s the stolen sculpts that are the problem .

Tori, if ppl want to go into business, they need to count the cost of whether it's worth it... yes emotions come into play for these sculptors b/c of their hard work, however this is where someone has to look into it to see whether it's worth the haul in the long run... it still doesn't give ppl in business the right to abuse and degrade those who don't buy their authentic kits... this goes for ANY business. You don't see Nike, Louis Vuitton, Chanel coming after counterfeit copies customers abusively or get their customers to do this either.. so all your arguments are also in relation to those businesses as well... however the conduct of those big businesses set the eg for what small business should do... yes sculptors that go on their own without a business behind them, like any small business is always going to be the underdog in this disrespectful and beoming more and more immmoral every day in every avenue of life...

The words "Healthy Bounderies." Healthy bounderies are important for any realionship. I spent Years trying to educate people on purchasing authentic. However after 8 years Im leaving the community. For one reason only..bullying. HEALTHY BOUNDARIES are fine, but when 80 year old Grandmas are being flat out bullied and kicked out of groups because they had no clue, thats when I draw my lines. I was one of the rare people that was in this for the art. I respected our artists and sculptures. I wonder looking back if I was to hard on others who didnt buy authentic. But I have spent time in groups just watching the last few months, and what Im seeing from some of the people that I admired is flat out bullying. Im seeing Hate, im seeing bullying, Im seeing an art that I no longer want to be a part of because its all become too toxic. I support our artists and our sculptures, but I refuse to support anyone that partakes in bullying. It was a good run, but im done. Wishing the reborn community all the best and I hope you all find a way to get along. OR no one will be making any money and it wont be the counterfit products that will destroy the Reborn world. I am an authentic supporter in my collection and work as well... like you said it was a respectful debate... and you did so respectfully at the same time trying to instill an education of the rights of authentic reborns... it's up to the person watching this either to take that on or not... Food and rent just keeps going up and a regular disability check is around $800 a month. I get that the dolls are art, but to some they are therapy. We need to think of them too. After a lot of thought, I have decided not to buy anymore replicas.That is my decision but I would never tell someone else what to do. I have been worrying for a while about toxins. The vinyl is different on those dolls no matter what anyone says. Is it more toxic than the vinyl of authentics? I do not know. However, I support a person's freedom to buy and collect what they want. It is not my place to judge someone's choices. And bullying of any kind should never be tolerated. It was actually the bullying behavior and bad attitudes of some in the community that pushed me into buying replicas in the first place. I wanted to see what all of the fuss was about and, having been a bullied child, It was my way of sticking it to the bullies. Also, those dolls will always be out there. Even if everyone in the adult doll community were to stop buying these dolls, the average person will still buy them. They are not going to go away. At the end of the day, each person must make the decision that is right for them. Meanwhile, I will enjoy my authentics and Berenguers. I love the full body Berenguers. They are cute, fairly realistic, can wear lots of different clothes and I don't worry about ruining their paint. ❤

Just because people choose to buy replicas doesn’t mean they can’t still support our artists. Obviously nobody is gonna go to a doll show with a replica. That’s terrible that these artists who run these doll shows are kicking people to the curb if they own or are associated with replicas. Regardless how you see it it’s still considered bullying!!! Why can’t everyone in the dolly community just go about their business and lets others buy what they choose

If I had plans to attend a doll show, I would save up for an authentic doll. I'm sick of all the sniping and bullying.

I'm 2 mins into your video and I already totally agree with what you said... both sides need respect to be heard or respectfully leave ppl to their decisions... no one has a right to condemn anyone for their choices... that's what courts, judges, law and most importantly God is for... otherwise we are breaching a human right to someone's self right to determine what is emotionally, physically and mentally healthy for them and their circumstances... this is a legal matter and therefore should be dealt with legally... otherwise no one should be saying anything... respectful debates sadly get too heated emotionally b/c it's not being dealt with as it should be legally since this is a legal business matter not an emotional, physical or mental issue. But sure has become one... Art in this industry is business oriented even though a reborn art has become therapy emotionally and mentally... and that's where the lines blur... thanks for your input...

@@OpiePeppercorn Yep I get totally where your coming from.. and your right... and that's where the law comes in. If we were to receive stolen goods, knowing or unknowingly we would be charged for possession of stolen goods... the original owner of those stolen goods doesn't come along and abuse the person who recieved the stolen goods... the matter is left to the law to be dealt with. and This is no different to that... legal matter where the law does the deciding and punishing not us as individuals whether customers, supporters of authentics kits or sculptors

I’m not getting rid of my counterfeit luxury handbags either. I don’t see LV or Gucci complaining about my “stolen” purchases. They’re too busy. People spend and do with their money as they please regardless of these tantrum

I know of several sellers on Etsy that buy kits from Temu but paint and sell them on for 3-5 times the cost

Me neither. I will not own one. If we keep buying them, it reinforces the theft. I just watched the video you posted. Scary! poison in the products.

I know this is a tricky/hot topic at the moment, thank you for sharing your thoughts on it. I personally only collect authentic and can’t believe the huge growth of counterfeits. However I will say that sometimes some members of the “authentic team” really do go very, very hard and end up attacking people who they’ve deemed guilty by association. I arrived back to Instagram after a couple years away to find out I’d liked a picture of a counterfeit (I had no idea it was a counterfeit) and my name & account was plastered on stories as a “counterfeit supporter”. Years and years of collecting authentically and yet publicly shamed for liking a picture on Instagram. I’m glad people are fiercely supporting artists and sculptors because I so appreciate them and they are integral to this community, I just wish it could all be handled respectfully on both sides. Life is very short. ❤️

My husband teaches at a university and has taken classes with Chinese students. To their culture, it’s a compliment to copy. Many had to be taught not to plagiarize.

Something else on generic/knock off foods such as Oreos- the companies that produce their versions of stuff like that have the proper licensing/regulations to be able to produce them.

No I think its fair to bring it up and address the reasons given both for and against counterfeits... but those reasons aren't the means for being disrespectful to others as Tori said... but I had to have a say on some of those reasons... respectfully...
