Hey guys! A few people are wondering how the ants tasted. Gotta say, they were pretty good! Sour, almost citrusy. I'd totally eat them in a salad, or maybe with some hummus and veggies. Also, yes, I cut my finger while slicing the onions. Classic-I am the biggest klutz. Lol. Finally, would you like to see more videos like this? Some people have been mentioning taboos against eating organ meats, etc... Does more food science sound interesting?

I think it's because we tend to not like eating internal organs and exoskeletons of any animal. In the west we like separating the meaty parts from everything else, and insects are too small to do that.
@Gwydda

Not really. I'm from Finland and the tiniest fish species (the size of your pinkie finger) we eat whole, with the head and the brains and the guts and all. I reckon it's just the idea of all those creepy-crawlers in your mouth that makes a lot of us recoil in disgust.

Gwydda Well, I believe the OG was primarily referring to it as a western (american) habit. Another thing, is that insects are associated with pests and filth. So obviously no one influenced in that mindset would refuse to eat insects. In places like Asia, the food is pretty wild, because the people there aren't really squeamish. Ranging from balut, to a lamb's head, to chicken liver, conch, brains, and a lot more.

I don't know about this as a species wide thing, but this is definitely my hang up. I'm probably fine with organs (which in some ways are similar to meat), but don't like the idea of eating a creature's whole digestive system (which may include everything they eat and unexcreted waste products). And I'm not sure about dealing with the exoskeleton of creatures: We eat the insides of crab/lobster exclusively since they're large enough. And while I love shrimp and will intentionally eat around 2 with the tail on, 90% of the shrimp I eat is pulled out of the tail, exoskeleton discarded - it's so tough and makes eating them difficult.

I've been growing bugs for food for a year. I still haven't started eating them. I started with only 200 mealworms and have been building a sustainable process. I want to use them to feed other food like aquaponics fish and quails and also sell them. But it amazes me how easy and inexpensive it is to raise bugs.

Cool! I remember a Kickstarter campaign called LIVIN Farms that made it easy to grow mealworms. How do you grow your worms? What's the process?
@thanrose
@thanrose 7 жыл бұрын
Some of my fondest animal husbandry memories are of raising mealworms from a pet store pathetic, starving, parched start. They were a delight, and always smelled like bacon, no matter what I fed them. I used a five gallon bucket with a lid, put a layer of shredded newspaper on the bottom. Topped with grain products of various sorts: rice cakes, dry oatmeal, flour, cornmeal, even some dried beans at times. Dump the little pet store package contents in the bucket on top, add a halved potato or halved apple. I'd change out the bedding and feed via colander maybe every two weeks, put the larva back in with new stuff and the pupa I'd mostly feed to wild animals I was supporting. The pre-pupating larval form, or the actual meal worm, was a tasty treat for rehabbed animals.

I honestly wouldn't mind (knowingly) eating insects. I've eaten mealworms and those tiny Mexican grasshoppers (forgot the name) seasoned with chili and lime. They're very nutritious. But of course, you eat insects every year by accident. Insects often wind up in our food by accident.

Ive had bugs before. The flavor was acceptable, what wasnt was the texture of the exoskeleton. I would happily eat a bug protein based diet if they came in a ground processed "bug burger" form that eliminated the disgustingly tough exoskeleton texture.

There's no argument that raising bugs is more efficient than livestock, but I noticed their was no argument comparing them to protein plentiful vegetables and legumes. Wouldn't a vegetarian/vegan diet be even more efficient than Entomophagy? I mean, bugs aren't the only thing that can live off compost... although from an ethical standpoint a bug probably suffers a lot less in it's rearing-to-slaughter cycle than most livestock. Also, probably our "cultural" aversion to bugs has to do with bugs spreading through various food-stores and contaminating them. Many foods become toxic after insects complete their lifecycle in them, and if we had no "bug aversion" we might eat those foods despite all the wrigglies and poopies.

Oh! and in some countries even local farmers get poisoned by the pesticides aswell.

Grasshoppers can taste real bitter if not done properly but can be absolutely *delicious* if prepared properly. In Mexico they are often sauted with garlic, butter and oftentimes chilli peppers, giving then an appetizing dark red color and a spicy savory taste with a crunchy texture not unlike corn nuts. I'd actually argue grasshoppers could become the most popular bug to eat since they are easy to raise and are largely vegetarians, if the stigma of eating bugs went down.This would also mean grasshopper would also become cheaper as demand rises because right now, even in Mexico buying prepared grasshoppers in this way is still on the pricier side.

I think the case can be made even more strongly in our industrialized societies. Most food is processed to a great extend. You, don't need to eat the bugs whole like you have shown here. Almost agreed, but I leave bugs to dares. I mean shrimps, mussels, snails (traditionally eaten by occidentals) are nasty if are not well prepared, washed, cleaned, purified (not to mention the origin control, necessary to know the potentials pollutants in our food). These processes are slow and anti-economical for occidental standards applied to small insects. E.g. I know what Anna tasted in grasshoppers, it is the same we can taste with bad quality shrimps (the not purified), she tasted the entrails and excrements of the bug (a big amount in weight of the bug).

In Germany we have a tradition of eating maybugs out of chocolate for Easter. Most people don't know that, in some places up until the 1950s, real bugs were used. At this time of the year they have eaten so much nectar that they are extremely sweet and therefore used to be a popular desert.

I had a quite memorable Christmas dinner in Taiwan with my Tai Chi Chuan Master and fellow students. One of the students owned a restaurant that served traditional Taiwan cuisine--an intriguing mixture of Japanese, Fukkienese, and Taiwan Aboriginal food. After many delightful courses, we shared a bottle of bee wine, then they brought in a platter of stir-fried bee pupae with basil. (Master Lu wanted to make sure I knew what they were--he pointed to one of the bees that had fallen out of the wine bottle, and told me, "those are this one's babies!" Thanks, Master Lu...) After many, *many* tiny cups of sake ("Keep 'em coming, Master Lu!"), I was ready to tackle the bee babies. Delicious! 😄 Tasted a little like honey-roasted nuts, and had a seafood-like texture. Had a chopstick duel over the last one. I won. Of course, these looked somewhat innocuous, little featureless white ovals, sans exoskeletons. Don't know if I could bring myself to eat something more...I dunno...'buggy'-looking? Like with legs & eyes & crunchy parts? Might take more teeny glasses of sake than I could handle...

Disgust is mostly cultural? I'm afraid I disagree there. I tend to see seafood as the insects of the sea. And they are delicious. However, we like them because they are meaty, tasty, and WE DON'T EAT THEIR SHELLS! Everytime I see somebody eating a grasshopper or a scorpion, I imagine biting into that hard shell, and I find it really repulsive.

Again, you just proved that it's mostly cultural. Other people are raised to eat insects and becomes a normality for them.

When I was younger, me and my siblings used to ride our bikes to our local candy shop where they sold chocolate ants, and when I lived in Arizona, I used to eat scorpion lollipops. Because of this, the idea of eating bugs has never really bothered me. Granted, bugs aren’t really a part of my daily diet in the slightest- I still eat “normal foods”, but if someone offered me some grubs, I wouldn’t complain. Except flies. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve almost eaten a fly that died on my food. That and moths (and probably mosquitos) are my one exception!

The reason bugs are offputting to me is the fact that it's harder to shell a beetle/spider compared to a crab/lobster. And also, they seem to thrive in unsanitary conditions, which as a mesophobe, gives off the impression that they are disease spreaders.

If there was an insect restaurant anywhere nearby, I would definitely try it. But that's not going anytime soon. We can't just take those insects already eating on our harvests because of pesticides (and especially they would be full of them, considering that the poisons are specifially designed for them) so it really depends on whether someone starts an organic insect farm. So if that's a thing in the future where I live, I will check it out!

My favorite recipe I haven't made is one for locusts from the American southwest. Take an iron skillet with a lid. Grease, set over camp fire. Add locusts you gathered as they newly emerged from the ground in the dawn before their wings have dried. Put the lid on quick!

My only qualm with eating bugs is the risk of parasites. I'd want to know for sure that it was safe to eat before popping a palm weevil, or whatever, in my mouth. But so long as it was parasite-free, yeah eating bugs sounds great!

1:38 well, that's because on the lobster you only eat the white meat, but in the case of insects you eat the eyes, brain, heart, all the other organs, exosqueleton and even the poop stored in the bug's body, so it's not the same

It's definitely a perception thing. I was raised eating grasshoppers but i could never bring my self to eating disgusting crickets. We usually roast the grasshoppers with lime, salt, chile, and garlic. But my favorite are "chicatanas" or leaf eating ants. Roasted and blended with tomatoes, peppers, onion, garlic, herbs and spices to make a salsa. Yummy

I've already tried black ants and mealworms. They were okay. You can definitely tell there's acidity in the ants. The mealworms are just pasty with a bit of crunch. Nothing spectacular. Ants could make for an interesting spice I guess.

I have been slowly trying to add more insects into my diet. I find them to be pretty tasty, and I like the idea of a cheap small-footprint protein source that is relatively 'clean'. Also for cooking some bugs like silkworm pupae which as shelled but full of juice, it's best to soak them in fresh water that you clean and replace to get some of the storage taste out. Then you cook them as desired! Crickets aren't my favorite due to the ratio of exoskel to meat though, they can be really crunchy. I do like how they take on flavors though!

I've always used shrimps and lobsters as counter examples when people say that eating bugs is inherently disgusting. It's most definitely a cultural thing. The problem is that due to a lot of safety regulations as well as the general disgust toward insects, the market is growing really slow in the West. We need to spread awareness and support businesses that try to open this market. I sponsored a Kickstarter campaign some time ago, called LIVIN Farms - Hive. It's for self-production of edible insects and I thought it was pretty cool.

In some regions in Indonesia, grasshopper, crickets, and the sexually mature form of termites are often deep fried into fritters. People don't quite find the idea repulsive but they're uncommon to find, unless if you go to rural regions. I don't recall having ever eaten the fritters, but I've had steamed shredded coconut mixed with wasps.

So far the only bugs I've knowingly eaten have been these chocolate covered ones. There were small crickets and mealworms (?). They were okay. I'm not fond of nutty flavors in general so that's probably why I didn't care for them. I might have to try the scorpion if it tastes similar shrimp.
