This is a truly enlightening debate and a refreshing divergence from the shrillness and juvenility of many debates even on social media. I always thought Kushal was the most cerebral and sensible of the trio of Sham Sharma, AIM and himself but it's probably the same reason why he doesn't spark as much controversy. I am always amazed at Dr Ranganathan's ability to argue both sides and the range of topics he covers in his posts and debates. His arguments on Sec 295 here are outstanding. I only wish he would post more about his scientific work and how it's fashioned his outlook on life. The only time recently I remember him posting on science is a small thread during Covid and that was about Ramdev baba's Patanjali's derivative work! Also, I request Kushal to invite people from the ExMuslim movement and the ExChristian group to his channel to expand the debate on free speech.

I think the main point of contention here is between principle and reality. From the perspective of principle, I agree with Kushal and Anand. But when it comes to realistically assessing the situation, I have some reservations. We can see that this madness did not start until Qatar jumped into the fray which was several days after Nupur made that statement on TV. It seemed like a coordinated and concerted effort to harm India in which several nations took part. What Nupur said has been claimed by many before but I don't think those instances would have attracted this kind of a reaction. It means that the target was not Nupur but India and Modi Government. Secondly both the murders in Udaipur and Amravati are being investigated by NIA and from the inputs that have come from the agency, it seems that these incidents may not be hate crimes but a well planned and coordinated effort with links to Pakistan. In the Udaipur case, I have heard that apart from the killers, there were two other people arrested who were there as standby in case the two main operatives failed to carry out the task. Isn't this unusual? All this planning and strategy to kill Kanhaiya Lal Ji? He was after all a normal person who worked as a tailor. He wasn't some dangerous combat trained guy taking out whom would have required this much effort and planning. So, in my opinion this is not a matter concerning free speech. This is directly related to national security. This is not a dispute but actually a full fledged attack on our country and civilization, like a war. We have to understand the difference between a dispute and a war. Disputes are resolved. But wars are fought, even if you want to resolve it a later stage. I think the Kushal and Anand have made the wrong diagnosis here. They are correct in principle but the disease is not what they believe it to be. The disease is something different altogether.
@vinaypratap32262 жыл бұрын
1. Right to freedom of speech and expression is a guarantee against State action for speech and expression, people may feel offended. But, that feeling of being offended doesn't give anyone a right to perpetrate violence. 2. When anyone favours curbs on freedom of speech because we are not a mature democracy, I would tell them that the first requirement for becoming a mature Democracy is freedom of speech. We mature by discussing ideas threadbare and accepting what is right. 3. 295 is a blasphemy law passed by Christian British. Independent India with its cultural heritage of free speech didn't have to continue with it.

A bit of a red-herring discussion this one. Anand and Kushal' travails stem not from the Hindu right having lost its appetite for free speech, but because an increasing number,rightly in my view, are correctly recognising that we are in a battle of survival. And when we are fighting that battle with weapons other than free speech, that means only that we are entering battle with them and are going to fight them any which way. It is up to Kushal and Anand to realise and understand that their pet theme absolute free speech(excluding the four exceptions mentioned by Anand which I also actually agree) is itself dependent upon the community surviving first and securing the perimeters. Mahua Moitra is an interesting case Of course Hinduism allows you to imagine your Gods and Godesses. Mahua Moitra too could very well have done that and i would have supported her also - if she were doing that only, i.e. imagining her own goddess. Or for that matter Leena Manimegalai also , if imagining her godess is what she was actually doing. But that isn't what she was doing. Imagining your goddess of the kind Anand is referring to would have involved two other things- (1) it would be generally respectful of other imaginings of the same Goddess and not felt compelled to describe them as North Indian, upper caste, Brahminical, Patriarchal. Those buzzwords now have a very specific connotation. (2) secondly, using the argument of I have a right to imagine my own Goddess, (of course you do) you cannot be destroying the very ecosystem which enables you to imagine your own God's and Goddesses. Surely an ecosystem which allows you to do that, if such an ecosystem is in a majority, such a majoritarianism cannot really be a threat to secularism or free speech, could it? Mahua Moitra is.part of a formation which is engaged in destroying this ecosystem. She has allied with those who are intent upon destroying this ecosystem. The imagining of my Goddess no longer happens in that part of Bengal which has now become Bangladesh. When I stand against Mahua Moitra, it is not really against free speech and free thought. It is rather a rallying around the ecosystem which facilitates such freedoms. That battle won't be won by the kind of arguments put forth by both Kushal and Anand.

Every one is a free speech absolutist until it comes to you. I don't think there is such thing called absolutist free speech its American myth, even America today do not have absolute free speech, Europe do not have it today, even country like Japan, Korea don't have it, India don't have it, Middle East don't have it, Latin America don't have it, Africa don't have it, Asia don't have it. Tell me where we have absolutist free speech. What America, Europe has was for a very brief period of time when you become economically rich, developed, materialistically success then you can have ansolute free speech for a time as people has so much that they don't care about what anybody has said. But you go into a country like congo, Afghanistan, Saud Arabia, India, China, Russia, Brazil, Argentina etc and start preaching absolute free speech then you are an idiot. Every country is not America and it can't be America it just not possible different countries have different realities, culture, society etc and people have to live in there reality its a harsh truth, you have to realistic about expectations. I can say in India we can have diversity of speech at best but not absolute free speech because 1st hindus by large today don't support it, Muslims and Christians in India are violently against it, 2nd hindus don't have a religious command to abuse non hindu religion or traditions to show there supremacy that is not the case with islam and Christianity it is there religious duty to abuse , harass, dehumanize, insult hindus just to show that there religion is superior and only way and only truth, 3rd hindus will face one sided organized attack from these desert cult and we are not in a position to retaliate, so diversity of speech is more realistic right now and it also supports hindu society. Again I am just saying we have to be realistic we cannot expect every country to be like America even usa today do not have absolute free speech it had earlier not anymore 😒 sad. Every country has to find its own way of dealing things and issues just copying west do not solve the problem what works in west may not work in India or Africa or China or Mexico or Middle East etc. Anyway its my analysis of this issue .

The reason why religion gets a free pass in society: Religion gives many people their core identity. Its diffcult for intelligent free thinking, logical people who are scientifically minded to understand this, but religion provides masses with an identity and a sense of purpose. While 'find your own purpose' is great, its high falutin advice which only few can execute and internalise. The majority of people in any country are followers, they cannot necessarily think for themselves. They want and need to be told what to do. Here religion comes in with a sense of identity( Who am I? ). Religion is the current answer to the question of 'Who am I?", and its basic answers are Hindu, Muslim etc. Taking away religion from a society will create a nihilistic vaccuum where ugly forces like social justice and post-modern intersecitonality come in. Until and unless people do not find other, more authentic sources of 'identity' and 'purpose', rleigion in its current form will stay. That is why people are so attached to religion because it gives them a semblance of identity.

Basically in case of religious scentiment ..the aspect of INSULT has to be defined clearly ...for example Krishna married 16k gopis is not insult bcoz its there in the books but if u call him a pervert is insult ....likewise Momad marries 6 yr old Aisha is no insult its their in the book Sahih Bukhari which they follow as Sunnah and Sunnat....so it cannot be an insult

Mahua has offended hindu sentiments because the way she comment about KALI , is same as Nupur said about muhamad .

It very disappointing to hear prominent intellectuals and journalists equivocating about freedom of expression ( so long as it doesn’t violate national security and other’s material interests) as the fundamental basis of democracy.

I agree with all points of mister Anand ranganathan ,but as he's already mentioned that he's not an expert of Hindu religion and things related to that he should have pondered more before declaring that what mahua said was right as Devi ma kaali accepts meat and alcohol So according to saptshati which describes ma durga and her various forms and other Hindu goddesses too it's clearly mentioned that by meat what maa kaali meant to accept was the meat of the asuras or demons which represents nothing but our inner flaws and bad deeds and what she meant by consuming alcohol was to consume the blood of the demons (again our inner flaws) as equivalent to मद or alcohol So those people who justifies the killings of animals and serving their meat and serving alcohol to ma kaali should be ashamed of it and should correct themselves as soon as possible!

shut the fuck up your sense of morality for our religion is not important at all, even rajputs, marathas offered meat and gave bali for Ma Bhavani and they have fought for dharma. I don't think anyone is trying to justify something we bengalis celebrate ma kaali as "Maacha" which means meat accepting deity. For Ma Kali's sake stop abrahamising my religion.

Who tf cares? It's still been A tradition .. what are you gonna do about that ? Stop nitpicking and cribbing so much .. In my own city /town temples 1000s of goats are sacrificed and consumed by people on or around durga puja, I'm trying to be vegitarian but can I really deny what's happening around me? And I'm not even in or from West Bengal
@Siberian_Khatru.2 жыл бұрын
@@bababistril it's not a tradition but it's more of a wrong practice being made as a tradition by misinterpreting the message of maa Kaali Stop accusing me of nitpicking! It's people who are nitpicking maa Kaali's wordings to satisfy their own fun element and they should atleast know the truth about what they are practicing! Not everyone's blindfolded but you simply can't serve meat and alcohol to ma kaali by saying that she accepts it because she doesn't And i don't even care about people eating meat or not but they should atleast learn before Justifying anything in the name of their gods or goddesses which clearly shows their sick and greedy mentalities (which has attracted millions of other people too who weren't directly into all this) I'll not deny the reality but at the same time it's my right to criticise what's being wrongly practiced and of its true than I'm ready to back myself but as long as i have researched it's atleast got nothing to do with ma kali intentionally accepting animal or human meat or alcohol

Most Kalibaris have animal sacrifice. Try going there and protesting, you will be slapped with article 295.
