Really interesting subject. I much prefer 'Combat Patrol' sized Bolt Action games. About the table size for small scale games... One way to look at it: Assuming the Bolt Action rules are build/balanced around 6'x4' and 1000 pts, that suggests a 'good' points-to-area density is (1000 / (6 x 4)) 42 points per square feet. The points level for a 4'x4' table would then be (4x4x42) 672 points, and a 500 pts 'Combat Patrol' size game should match a 4'x3' table. Ofc, this is purely theorycrafting, and leaves out consideration of the impact of weapon ranges... but I think it has some merit.
