I lived in the Castro throughout most of the 1970s and was there for Milk's assassination, which was overwhelming. The assassin (Dan White) was a FORMER supervisor and not in office during the assassination. Although I live in Los Angeles now, I have not been back to SF in quite a few years, although I still have friends and ex-roommates who still live there. I moved from SF in Nov 1984. I never "got" the double entendre for The Sausage Factory, although I used eat there in the 1970s. I went to a Bette Davis festival at the Castro Theater, and Bette was there herself for the beginning of it, along with dozen of impersonators, whom she seemed to appreciate. There were countless events that I attended in the Castro, including the annual street fair, and a dog show competition, hosted by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgences, with Shirley MacLaine as the emcee and primary judge. The street was blocked off for this event, and Shirley was on a stage right in front of my bank (Hibernia at the time) at 18th and Castro. I had walked there with my sister (who was visiting from Texas) so that I could go to my ATM, and we were not expecting this. My sister said, "There are no fat people here!" and I said, "They are too vain to be fat." I guess it was a bit of a culture shock for her since she had just flown in from Texas. This was in the late 1970s, I believe.

EDDvlogs it’s not gonna be until June next year so hopefully everything will have settled down by then. We got a day in SF last year when we did Route 66 with a view off route stops and we’ve been fairly obsessed with the idea of returning as soon as we can. We loved that the steps to “Barbary Lane” from Tales From The City were a ten minute walk from our hotel, so we had to head straight there. Lol. There’s still so much for us to do. We can’t wait to get back. 😍

I go to a Senior Center in the Castro & know quite a bit about the area but your video is very uplifting & you have done a lot of research. Thanks. Another tip is that’s it’s easy to get there by taking the Historic MUNI F line with the street cars from all around the world.

Hey there, you could try doing stuff outdoors. One of my favorite things is to go to the beach here (ocean beach). We also have golden gate park, twin peaks (if it’s open) fisherman’s wharf if you want to see Alcatraz from there. I have videos if those locations too if you’re interested. There are things to do that don’t require things to be open. Hope that helps!
