When i was 21 me and a friend went on a backpacking adventure around Europe. When we found our selfs in Paris we met some nice people. Drank, had a great time and found out they where locals. It wasn’t long before we where invited to go to a “locals spot” and we met them at a manhole cover, they opened it and we soon found our selfs in the catacombs. After what seemed like an hour of dark very creepy tunnels we came to a huge open area with a rave going on. It had a full bar and lights. It was a real club. I had the best clubbing experience ever. After the party was siad and done people seemed to disappear in to the tunnels and soon it was empty and we did the same. As we made our way out, with help... i found out that is was day time and coming out a manhole during morning rush is not as pleasant. But we found out what we did was highly illegal afterward after talking to some of the hotel staff.

@@auto_math , should I make it back to France, I'd love to see Lyon, Provence, the South and so on; But my arthritis is pretty bad these days and so my traveling might be pretty much over. My wife did try to get me to go to the Eiffel tower, but one look at the long lines and big crowds and I had a hissy fit and refused (I refuse to wait in line for anything unless it's really really really worth seeing, but I don't view the Eiffel tower as being anything particularly special). We did however enjoy visiting the Catacombs. Lunch at Cafe Diane in the Tuleries was lovely. Seeing Impressionist works at the Musee D'Orsay moved me nearly to tears. And Anthony Bourdain, may he rest in peace, was famous for being flippant like that. He liked Paris just fine, as long as one avoided the obvious tourist attractions such as the Eiffel tower.

I've been to the unofficial catacombs of Paris many times. We rarely call them catacombs tho, but quarries as you'll rarely find bones there. It is indeed quite relaxing and if going with few friends (max 5!!) you can have a good time away from the worries of the "upstairs" world (as you said, no phone reception/wifi, although some have tried to setup antenna relays there...). Canned food, energy bar or dehydrated soup are usually the go to meals with ultra-light portable stoves made of soda cans. Brought a girlfriend once. She quickly lost it when I took a corner and turned my flashlight off to freak her out haha!! There are entire art galleries there and a special corridor dedicated to the Paris National Superior School of Mines (the corridor is under the school) where on the walls each "Class of '##" has done a mural painting since the 70s! Only once have I ever been caught... as I was cleaning the f'in trash "tourists" left behind! I only paid 30€ and the cops even helped me finish before taking me back up to the nearby Metro station 😂👍🚯 I'm now getting to old to squeeze through those tiny hole (we call them "cat flap"/chatières). It's a young man's world!
@b.e76494 жыл бұрын
Why only 5 friends max?
@onepiecepedia4 жыл бұрын
@@b.e7649 Several reasons but mostly it's "quieter", i.e. you don't want a massive group of people being seen jumping over a fence, crawling in a hole under a bridge of an old railway, as it is still an illegal activity to enter the 'unofficial' quarries/catacombs under Paris (danger of colapsing, flash flooding etc.) and a smaller group makes it easier to avoid the police. Also, less trash to pick-up and better respect from the cataphiles (the regulars).

I've actually got down there (to the off limits catacombs not the tourist Ossuary) in 2006 with a group of Cataphile guys we met. They had maps of the catacombs and carried gas lamps and had old school miner outfits, including the helmets with the gas lamps mounted on them. We hung out in this small room-like area, way in there and drank all night, they even brought and cooked fondue!. When we were done, we all thoroughly picked up all our garbage and trekked about an hour to the closest exit, on the way we went through the old german bunker from WWII, there were different colored lines (red, yellow and black) on the wall to tell them how to get back to their bunker. (Interesting detail, the French resistance had the few maps that existed but the Germans had none so they needed the indicators). Anyway, when we got out, at like 6am, the exit was a manhole but at first it didn't move! Finally he got it open and it turned out there was a garbage can on top of it and when we all came out filthy with dirt all over us and there was a garbage man and some shop people right there just looking like WTF??!! LOL. Awesome experience but crazy dangerous, if you loose light you're dead for sure. Without light you literally could wander around forever and not find and exit or even know it's there.

I visited the catacombs in 1980 and found it fascinating. There were no more than 10 other tourists, I didn't know them, and we soon drifted apart as we weaved around the path. You could hear people talking but you couldn't see each other. I actually walked through there with no one else for company, loved it. Didn't see a single ghost the whole time. As fascinating as the place is, it comes second to the Capchin Monks Monastery in Rome. Simon could do a story about that place.

I read about a guy back in the late 18th century who went down into the catacombs to drink on his own and with only a candle for light. He got lost when his candle blew out and his remains weren't found for 11 years. The saddest thing about it was that his body.was only a few metres from an exit. His ghost is reputed to haunt the place where he died.

Ok... i'm 1:22 in and I'm just a human like others... I live in the USA.. not others.. but I'm not some closed minded jerk.. What I have an issue with is the fact you say km and then miles.. I did look it up and 200miles is 321km. You say 2km then 200 miles.. Keep it consistent. Do i need to say more? Yes.. you might get mad at this as most people do. It's part of being human.. Living in the USA I really... REALLY wish they would have raised me with the km and meter/10 power standard.. but they didn't.. Switching that around makes it difficult and frustrating for myself, and as a great artist once said.. there are millions that think just like me. You do awesome work (I haven't seen it all, just some vids) so keep it up. Look at this as a email from your "competent" manager and think on it. If i can program a method to standardize everyone's media into a single file format then I have hope that people can see these little consistency issues. Doubt you'll read this, but if you do... thanks for the content that has provided information to all of us; I know you are not from our crappy standard so just sick with your own. I honestly think the meter standard is way better.. hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

The story of the cinema and restaurant is no mystery at all. It was built and operated by a group of pioneer urban explorers called "La Mexicaine de perforation". They still have quite a reputation in Paris for pulling harmless stunts like this. A few years ago, an affiliated group called "Untergüther" clandestinely restored the clock of the Panthéon. These guys are legends.

Also, the underground lake under the Gardier Opera is not part of what is called the catacombs. It's completely unrelated. In fact, there are very few galeries on the right bank of the Seine. The vast majority of the old quarries are on the left bank, under the 7th, 6th, 13th, 14th, and mostly 15th arrondissement. There is a small network on the right bank under the Trocadero, but that's about it.

I went there once, my friends acted as guides as they were active "cataphiles". Newcomers in the catacombs are called "tourists" by cataphiles. We went to a party and the music was incredible, it was so loud, I felt vibrations throughout the tunnels and into my lungs. There was a small shrine to Bob Marley there too. We went to sleep after moving away far enough to not hear anything anymore. I didn't notice it while i fell asleep but when i woke up i noticed there was a skull in front of where i slept.

I visited the catacombs when I went to Paris a couple of years ago, and the stretch with the bones is really... bizarre for want of a better word. The atmosphere totally changes, it's quite surreal seeing so many skulls and other bones knowing that each one is a person. People change, too. On our way through everyone went from talking loudly and taking photos, but as soon as we hit the section with the bones everyone went quiet, no more photos. Very peaceful. With the exception of a group of 3 who decided to lean against the skulls for photos, and even grab bones off the top to make fake dicks. 🙄

My daughter and I went into the catacombs in Paris when we were in Europe. A friend in Austria would not believe that they existed.

@@geographicstravel oh it will be..OHOHOO it will!! I'd also suggest one channel strictly for "events" unless you're dividing those between this one and biographics. You have my support nonetheless! Subscribed and activated the bell :) thank you!!

@@geographicstravel SO is deleting comments something your staff still actively does ? I still have screenshots of one of the staff going full on millenial and deleting almost every comment that had anything negative to say , be it a lack of information or somebody correcting their bad research

Just here for the mighty algorithm, and to say thanks for working with the Blogging through History YT channel. The reactions that he does really add to the content that you have put out. This is a great synergy between an information channel and a detailed history one. 😊

Another day, another Geographics video! What days of the week are future Geographics videos going to be uploaded? It is difficult to keep up with all of your channels, when each channel posts and what time they post, etc., but I definitely love all of them!

Back in 1973 I was on a European concert tour with my university glee club. While we were in Paris we took a tour of the Catacombs. One of the pieces in our repertoire was a drinking song called "Down Among the Dead Men." Naturally, we started singing it as we descended into the gloom.

I loved going into the catacombs when I went to Paris about eight years ago. It was an oddly calming place - I think it's because of how neat it all looked. I still have the skull bracelet I got from the gift shop when we got out. I remember having a conversation about American politics with the cashier, it was siiiiick.

Interesting information in entertaining details of historic location. You are so creative in your presentation. I remember the Catacombs being a subject of discussion, decades ago, in school. Not near as interesting as this! Thanks for another of your descriptive offerings, Simon!

The scariest part of the book World War Z was the battle underneath Paris. Imagine the catacombs, but with ZOMBIES! Too bad the movie totally glossed over all the good parts.
