And the cocnepts..."What if a rough working class Irish family had their son come out and a) they subvert expectations by having them just accept and support him right away and b) Their "acceptance and support" is more horrifying than rage and denial would have been. I'm lucky being Australian, maybe I've been exposed to more of the accents. Also I read "Trainspotting" as a teenager and all the dialogue is written phonetically. Once I wrapped my head around that many of the thicker accents from the British isles are easier to understand.
