Maybe combining it with hack n slash? For the splash damage. I was playing with the mechanic with autoaxe.

Sounds neat, I just don't see the appeal of melee vats.

To be honest I was of the same mindset. But then one thinks about how much ap is used on a autoaxe or chainsaw which is 4 i think, compared to regular melee which is 30-40 ap. Where im getting at with this is that while it does focus on one mob, the splash damage will hit the rest of them. Saving one a bit of effort if not clear the area.
