David: I'm an SDN architect. Been doing SDN/NFV and SD-WAN for about 9 years now. Do I have a CCIE? No. Every company that I have worked for I have asked the question "Do I need to go get my CCIE" and the answer has always been NO. I'm a special case because I have been in on the ground floor. Working in this area from the get go means I got the experience when there were no courses on SDN/NFV. We were developing it. That said would I recommend this to others? No.! The "N" in SDN means network. This is not an IT area but a network engineers area. Software (Python) is a tool to get the job done, not the result of your schooling or training. ie you are not a developer. I co-wrote an internal document when I was at Verizon called "Putting the "N" back in SDN". Networking is very different from CI/CD. Therefore the role of the data network engineer is evolving not disappearing. To that end "Go get your CCIE" and LEARN Python. There are great paying jobs out there for this combination and also a great future. I know. I'm living the dream.

SDWan is similar to what Jeff mentioned vManage= controller for vEdge vSmart = control plane for all route policies vBond = Certificate authentication between vEdge & vManage vEdge = Small Linux box that acts as the spoke router and is pretty much a dumb router.....if it loses connectivity to vManage it has a certain amount of time before all control plane info is loss. This router is a plug and play device out of the box that needs the internet to become functional. Overlay Management Protocol is its preference for sharing information back to the controllers.

David...I hear of the concept of full stack network engineer (much like full stack web developer, front end and back-end), where one should learn not just R&S but CCNA security , CCNA collaboration, wireless, cloud, and network automation to enhance ones prospects for employment with little to no experience? By having a broad range, is this a good way to add value for one's resume and career and stand out from the crowd since there are so many CCNA R&S's in the world or is CCNP and CCIE concentation R&S better?
@jeffmclaughlin66125 жыл бұрын
I'm not David but since I was the other half of this video, let me take a crack at it. You raise the big dilemma. Would it be better to go deep (CCIE) or go broad (multiple CCNAs?) You are correct that, with automation, a breadth of experience is better. Solutions-level thinking is essential. That is, you should be able to think beyond the box-level to how the different components of the system interact. That said, good luck getting there without understanding the fundamentals. You can't study everything at once, so you need to focus. You need to understand R/S deeply before you move on to wireless. I would say that you do not want to be too broad and unfocused. The certification tracks will eventually catch up and you will be seeing more solutions-level certs as well, so hopefully you won't have to go to crazy racking up letters after your name.
@enriquegabriel77084 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend to get all those CCNAs because it's better to be the person able to solve the issues instead of being the person able to speak in a general way about anything. Don't try to hold an entire departament on your shoulders, just try to be the expert in the Field you have choosen. When I have a proble at work, I call for the expert, not for the assosiate.
@patrickcummings68715 жыл бұрын
David...Is working towards a much broader approach called a full stack network engineer (much like full stack web developer, front end and back end development) better than CCNP CCIE concentration for the entry level person coming into the field. For example getting CCNA R&S, Security, Collaboration, Cloud, Wireless, automation (Python), VMware make you more valuable than just getting CCNP. Wouldn't this approach be much better than the latter especially since there are so many CCNA R&S's in the world?

However the average commercial pilots salaries are overall down in comparison to before their avionics and navigation automation, so can we expect the same in regards to Network Engineering?
@jeffmclaughlin66125 жыл бұрын
I would disagree with this, although feel free to correct me if you have information I don't. Currently there is a shortage of commercial pilots so there is very high demand. I hear from pilot friends that the demand is so high that pilot schools can't schedule training because they keep losing their instructors to the airlines. I don't know the macro trends for salaries since the early years, but I don't think it's trended down much if at all.

Hi David, i am looking to switch to Cyber security and I am thinking of obtaining CCIE security certification, but I have never been a real network engineer in the career ( i have been a system administrator), I do have general knowledge around networking and I did take CCNA S&R many years ago but I have never configured a router in my life, so is it possible for people like me to get CCIE Security? does it require you to have in-depth knowledge around S&R?
@xerxes80752 жыл бұрын
ccie compare to other certificates like ccna or ccnp like compare hills to mountains, for ccie level you need a lot of solid knowledge about related fields, among ccie’s EI and Security are easiest but valuable
