The Celibate Rifles were the greatest post-punk Australian band, hands down.

Missing them on the oz landscape. The greatest- a band you never tired of. Known as a Sydney band they were treasured elsewhere too. So many great memories of Brissie 90s gigs- Waterloo, the Roxy, the playroom, Gabba and memorable night with hard ons and a very young screamfeeder at metropolis tavern.

I cannot believe that Australia's most well known post punk band sound as good today as they did all those years ago as I'll be 71years old in April this year, they are like the Cure, and just get better with age.

Damn fine band, this lot! I saw them once and only once at The Silver Dollar Lounge in the late 80s. 'Roman Beach Party' had been released around that time and every song on that CD is the Rifles at their finest. I yelled for 'Waltzing Matilda' as an encore - am not sure if they heard me. I always appreciated Damien's sarcastic sense of humour - not to mention the relentless driving pulse of two guitars and a rhythm section. Thanks for uploading this gig, or any other gig, I would have loved to attend in person but could not.

Daughter: How many times did you see them, Dad? Me: About a hundred Many times in the inner city and inner west. Too young for the STUC. Old enough for The Graphic Arts Club. Down at Caringbah, over at Narrabeen, out at Parramatta and a night of B-sides and covers at Concord RSL. Twice at The Marquee (once when they weren't there because of visa problems and the next week when they had their visa problems sorted). Consistently fast and loud. Damien, gone but not forgotten. Vale

Damien Lovelock wrote very intelligent lyrics, because he was a very intelligent man. They were social and political commentary that I agree with. Damien was a very deep and thoughtful person. If you think the lyrics are stupid then he is talking about you Neil. Just because you're at a Celibate Rifles gig doesn't mean you understand the message. Look at all the Midnight Oil fans that don't understand their messages. As Skyhooks said back in 1974 "Whatever Happened To The Revolution? We all got stoned and it drifted away" Greg McCainish

Definitive along with the Studio 22 footage. A bizarre nite supporting Painters and Dockers without Paulie Stewart who’d collided with a hard object during the previous week, after “X” led by Steve Lucas and the first band... still performing now but their name has slipped my mind... they are really good too...
