The Central Issue Finally Resolved in Season 2: The Summer I Turned Pretty

My title is harsh, but true. I can't help but enjoy this show anyway tho 🤣 This is my complete review of season 1, and character analysis. The Summer I Turned Pretty is an American coming-of-age romantic series created by author Jenny Han for Amazon Prime Video. It's based on her novel trilogy of the same name. Lola Tung stars as a teenager involved in a love triangle with two brothers played by Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno. In August 2023, the series was renewed for a third season, which will consist of ten episodes, so subscribe if you want to see my reviews of season two and three!

Honestly, I’m just team Jeremiah finding happiness, even if it’s not with belly. He deserves to have someone who can love him with their whole heart, and belly can’t do that becuase a piece of her heart will always be with Conrad. Jerh will literally remember the smallest details about her and does not deserve to be a second option. I can’t wait for your video on season 2 to come out so I can hear your opinions!!! Season 1 was fine, season 2 is just bad in my opinion. The dialogue is so silly and boring. Going from one brother to the other and back again really is creepy and it has damaged the brothers' relationship. Susannah and Laurel should have been a couple. Like her ex-husband says in season 1, Susannah was the one Laurel really loved. They are constantly in each other's business, it's not just Laurel, they basically act like a couple. Jeremiah is a way better boyfriend than Conrad, so sweet and actually wanting to be with Belly 100%, but he deserves better than her...

I love this show because I can relate a little. I ended up dating my equivalent to Conrad when I was 16 and we ended up dating for almost 6 years. We realised we were better off friends and we still are. I don't regret trying though, it's better than wondering what could have been. I knew him my entire life. His mum was my mum's maid of honour. Our Grandparents were also friends, so we grew up with them basically. They lived further away as we got older so we only saw them once every few months or when we were really busy a couple of times a year. Had a crush on him since I was like 12 or 13 but thought he saw me as a sister. Then one new years day when I was about to turn 16 his parents pretty much turned the internet off and told him they would turn it back on when he stopped moping around and asked me out. I said no (my brother his best friend even gave us his blessing). I didn't want to ruin our friendship. But I just acted like we were a couple anyway. I couldn't help myself. I also made him agree that we still had to be friends if we broke up and that we couldnt let it ruin our families friendship. We didn't work out mostly because I was going through a lot of shit due to childhood sexual abuse and wasn't honest with him. He needed someone a little more smothering and there. I can be distant, especially with my mental health back then. But I don't regret giving that relationship a go. He gave me extremely high standards for how I should be treated and I would never settle for anything less. Oh and also it was after we broke up but his mum also battled cancer and beat it twice. I can relate to the relationship between Belly and Susana too. I talk to his mum more than him these days actually 😂. Thought I'd share my story since as unrealistic as this show is, I can relate. I agree with the two brothers thing though that's fucking weird. Just pick one for fuck sake, stop stringing them both along and fucking with their heads.

i felt this way too! I read the books as audiobooks and I kept thinking how they were only enjoyable because the actor who plays belly was narrating them and to translate it to tv it really needed the changes that they made to the plot.

I find it really funny that the actor who plays Jeremiah was actually in The Vampire Diaries, he played a younger Damon in a flashback in season 6 I believe. Like they could not be ripping the TVD love triangle off more if they were legit trying lol

YES, thank you! It’s supposed to be set ( when the original books were made in 2009 and finally ending 2011.) a lot of songs very fitting for that time would of been boys like girls, lady A, owl city, life house, Beck you know songs a beach place would be likely to play. ( been to the beach and beach town nobody is playing those songs on the show every 5 seconds ) Heck, even a much lesser known artists at the time. I wanted to love it and be taken back to those simple times but they end up changing it to make it modern and it bums me out. They ruined what made the books so special in the first place

I haven’t read the books or watch the show but I heard that Jenny Han ruined Jeremiah’s character. When I say I hate when that happens like just make him more unlikable from the start don’t make him more likable than the one you chose from the start. Also calling Isabel ,Belly, is atrocious.

Michael I mean I really liked that he was her „endgame“ , and how the dynamics changed with Rafael for both. The moment Michael „died“ I was so shocked. The three year time jump was necessary to make the comeback with Rafael logical, but it was so messy and needed time. I really like their pairing and love the last episode also his character is one of my favorites. Still I feel like Michael got treated not with enough kindness. I mean he saw one of his best friends dying, his fiancée leaving for another man, he almost got killed,then he lost all his memories cause of a horrible treatment , lastly got turned to another person who was hopeful to get back together with his wife, just marrying and impregnating the woman who almost killed his dog .

something i appreciate about jenny han’s writing (the only thing really lol) is her ability to write families. i hated to all the boys, but i remember finding the family dynamics being so enjoyable. in the summer i turned pretty, again, i love the family aspects of it. i also just like the show, it’s just enjoyable even with its flaws. and then i also loved XO Kitty (the to all the boys spinoff. that was goofy and fun. nothing amazing, but just like wholesome and made u happy??? and like i found that one actually played with some tropes and subverted them, which i enjoyed). however she’s an author who’s stories i only like when i watch the film adaptations 😂 i read to all the boys and the first summer i turned pretty book-just found her writing style so blech. but on screen it’s enjoyable. it translates well idk

Does someone remember the Drawn together-Episode where they are babies and they k*ll and dress up as their babysitter ,who dated two brothers. At the end they realize she didn’t deserve them ,and they just leave together happy to reform their bond and have one another again. I just want this for Jeremiah and Conrad. I mean they lost their mother , also their father sucks. Belly sucks in my opinion, cause she doesn’t care enough.But this will never happen, because Romance is more important then your brother 😐. I think people forget how when we're teens we make a lot of "bad" decisions that make us cringe now. This whole show is mostly in the point of view of a teenage girl so the messiness is accurate, the feelings, body changes, crushes, when a guy first notices you etc. But belly really needs to take a break from the brothers and explore her options, hopefully they'll do that in the show. I do appreciate the concept of first crush, first love, childhood sweethearts etc but mostly this show is a form of escapism for me.

I'm still laughing about Jeremiah attempting to call AAA, Belly trying to explain to him how to lift his car, and within ten minutes of him attempting to call AAA, throwing a fit and saying AAA would be there already. Jeremiah has clearly never called them before, since I've never called AAA and had them not take at least an hour in a populated area, let alone what looked like a small country road

I’ve always thought that the premise of The Summer I Turned Pretty would’ve worked sooo much better if Belly was a boy. Because it’s way more realistic for boys to have an impressive glow up during the span of just a year (grow taller, deeper voice etc.) because puberty hits them all at once, whereas girls change more slowly over time
