The Chain
OPB. Fleetwood Mac
Arranged by Aiden Timko
Solo by Marco Ingrassia
VP by Bradley Mattern
“The Chain, written by Fleetwood Mac for their 1977 album, Rumours. This was the only song by the British-American rock band to credit all 5 core members. When the band recorded the song they all recorded their ideas separately, yet, it felt whole. In this arrangement every part has their little moments while staying together and listening to each other, creating a beautiful blend. The song’s catchy tune may have come entirely out of a jam, however, the lyrics meant much more. At the time, band members Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks’s relationship was falling apart and the lyrics were meant to mirror this difficult time.
We added this song to our program because we felt that the bond we formed and the moments we all created together represented The Chain. Chains are only at their fullest potential when pulling or supporting big loads. When members of our group are stressed, anxious, etc. they know that we have their back and are here to support the weight on their shoulders. We also acknowledge that for some of us, chains can carry negative connotations, like a ‘ball and chain.’ Despite everything holding us down, our bond and blend hold us together in one long chain. A chain that will never be broken.” - Aidan DeVerna
