Back in the late '80s had a 340 built by a well known speed shop. Chris Wood Engines. It had under 50 miles on it since the build. One intake valve got hung up in the valve guide, bent pushrod, and a hammered out lifter. Talked to a jerk behind the counter, who said I should of built a Chev small block. NO WARRANTY. Learned my lesson at an early age. This was pre internet, but go by word of mouth. 40 years later I still have that 340, and the '57 D100 it was slapped into. It's always the small details that will bite you.
@classicwefiАй бұрын
Man that was loose valve guide luckily it didn't break the head off that valve a severely damage the engine.
@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160Ай бұрын
Exactly, the valve was slamming shut on just one side trying its best to knock the head off😳

Good moring Kiwi, I've been a mechanic for too many years, semi retired now. Working at a Chevrolet dealer in the early 80s, I was handed a 64, 65 Corvette with a similar popping noise. Removed the rocker cover and it got way louder. Took my listening device, a 3/8" fuel hose and heard it come in from underneath the valve spring on one of the middle two exhaust valves. Pull the head. #4 exhaust valve was as bad if not worse than the one you just found. Amazing part about it. It's still ran pretty good.
@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160Ай бұрын
Sounds very similar !! The T/A ran ok too, not great but not awful🤔
@fishgeralding9224Ай бұрын
Looks like you caught that in the nick of time! 👍In my opinion the 340 (x heads and block) and the 289 k code closed chamber heads were the 2 most under rated small blocks. I've driven cars with both and they impressed me.

That's such a nice car. I've never seen another T/A in that color of blue before. I've never seen a guide wiped out like that before. As soon as I saw that it was worn heavily on one side, I knew there was something causing an uneven load on the valve. Glad you guys figured out that it was the springs... Way back in 1983 ,when I was 19 years old, I had a '69 VF Valiant Regal with the LA 318 . I really loved that car , and enjoyed it for a good period of time ,but all of a sudden it started to puff out a bit of blue smoke through the single exhaust pipe. Thinking back, it was an intermittent puff of smoke , and not constant , but being young and inexperienced, I panicked at the sight of smoke, and sold it cheap to a car salesman, who had the nickname "Sharkey" . Just after that, a workmate suggested to me that the problem could have been something as simple as a defective valve guide seal on one cylinder . All I know was ' a few day's later, I saw "Sharkey " driving that Valiant, with no smoke from the exhaust, and it was for sale. Probably it was a seal , or maybe a worn out guide? .

Obviously we're only seeing a limited amount but from what you've shown it looks like something went into the combustion chamber causing that scoring, out the exhaust but may have been caught while it was closing and damaged the guide. That much play in the valve is not from normal wear and tear. Plus a spring binding explains guide problems but it doesn't explain why only one wore out so severely but the rest seem fine. If the springs are binding then you'd see damage to all the valves or rockers or pushrods not one single valve. Then again we only see what we see on the video. Maybe there was more we didn't see. Good luck with it. That's a special car and it's a sin to see it sidelined. I looked again and there is bare metal around the guide boss @ 6:12. Could have happened when you took it apart or it could be trash down the pipe. I know you're a pro but I'd look really closely at that piston.
@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160Ай бұрын
Shacklets are going through it with fine tooth comb 😎👍
@jseal21Ай бұрын
@@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 I'm sure they'll sort it out but if it's binding then you'd think you would see it on the intake first since they tend to have more lift. Might want to check that exhaust lifter for signs of binding damage to the cam lobe as well. Good luck Kiwi and keep the videos coming.
