Meanwhile the Black and Gold Brigade are licking their wounds after a home loss to the Bungles. Yeah. Typical tale of missing best players. Roth out in OT. No Troy Palamalu who would have been in the position that allowed the 61 short catch and huge run. Plus playing in KC. Not that much of a shocker IMO. Plus the Steelers may have been defending champion but they were nowhere near the top of the league in this subsequent year. Hell they weren't even in the lead of their own division trailing Cincinnati by a game and had a terrible division record of 1-2 against The Bengals 5-0. So again, not really a shocker.

Same thing happened when the Steelers got #5 If there is any consolation, Bill Cowher’s final game was at CIN & knocked the Bengals out In 2005, the Steelers went into Cincinnati & beat them in the Wild Card. It is believed that the Bengals passed on Cowher when they chose Mike Shula to be their coach #1, then came #2, 3-peat ended at Oakland against Madden-led Raiders #3 ended Dallas’ bid for back-to-back, #4 was the last hurrah as the next season - 1980 - ended with the Steelers missing the playoffs for the 1st time since 1971

@@1990Thunderbolt Nature of the NFL beast One year things go your way either by how the schedule is laid out, injuries to your team & others, the next… not so much The Steelers 3 Super Bowl appearances (2-1) in a 5 year span come with a pretty big asterisk 2005: They were the 6 seed which meant at CIN (3), then at IND (1), and winner of the 2-4/5 matchup DEN was the 2. 4-5 game was NE-JAX which the Patriots easily won. Patriots go to Denver, Brady throws a game changing int to Champ Bailey that flips momentum, Denver wins, loses AFC Champ to eventual SB winner PIT 2008: Brady misses rest of season due to knee injury suffered in Week 1 against the Chiefs. Another thing to blame the Helmet Catch on. Patriots win SB 42, they’re playing Thursday Night opener, likely against the Steelers. NE goes 11-5 but misses out on playoffs (2 Ls by 8 or less: at IND, Brett Favre led NYJ in Foxboro). AFC is pretty scrambled 1)TN, Kerry Collins named starter due to beef between Jeff Fisher & Vince Young, Thanksgiving in Detroit where they mauled the Lions (0-16) 2)PIT 3)MIA, 1-15 to Wildcat 11-5 AFC East Champ 4)SD, were 4-8, won final 4 including a win & in SNF game at home against DEN that led to Mike Shanahan getting fired 5)IND, quiet 12-4 season 6)BAL, Joe Flacco rookie year 11-5 Favre on the Jets & that team collapsed. Oh and the 1972 Dolphins got to pop the corks much earlier than in 2007 when the Jets upset the Titans in November. And that’s before I mentioned what happened in the NFC & how AZ made it to the Super Bowl 2010: NE AFC #1. Lose in divisional to the NYJ. Jets make their 2nd consecutive AFC Champ appearance, comeback from down 20+ was not enough, Rex Ryan slams his headset on the ground, Steelers lose to the Packers (1st NFC 6-seed to win Super Bowl) at JerryWorld
