As always, Great review, John. I saw this movie at the time of its release in the theatre with a good friend, also a film buff.( I remember his comment at the time was how surprised he was that Jean Marsh was killed off so quickly in the opening considering that she was pretty well known at the time.) I thought that it was a terrific story and film. I bought the DVD later and have watched it a few times through the years and feel that the film holds up very well and wish they would make movies like this today. I'm glad you mentioned the terrific soundtrack. I had picked up a 2007 deluxe 2cd of the soundtrack that was limited to 1000 copies... That the soundtrack is included in this 4k package is really a great bonus. By the way, the second cd in my soundtrack set has only seven additional tracks; mostly unused or alternate cuts, so you're not missing much music in the cd in your set.

I don't suppose it would be viable to make classy films like this today Stephen because cinema goers are essentially children and twenty somethings and when it comes to ghost stories they probably expect masses of computer effects and over the top jump scares along with everything that goes with it. I don't think they'd appreciate a good film so much as we did as youngsters but one day I may be surprised. As for the soundtrack CD, it's one of those movie scores that you can actually sit down and listen to. Many are so bombastic that it's impossible to relax and simply enjoy. A great release and having been along the racks of discs I've watched this year so far, the package as a whole makes it the best release of all so far. What a treat. John.

It's a shame haunted house films aren't produced in the same quality today but youngsters demand computer effects and loud jump scares to get them into a cinema to watch a ghost story these days so that's the end of that. John.

This is the best channel on KZbin. The Changeling is my all time favorite. Seen it over a 100 times since the first time in '84. And by the way " Until the next video, bye bye for now". I want that on a T-shirt! Regards from a 56 year old Norwegian Movie Collector fan.

The Changeling is a great and terrifying ghost story and what makes it even more exciting is that it appears to be based on a true story. I really like the suspenseful and haunting atmosphere in this horror film. It's a shame they don't make horror films like this anymore.

There is an extra on both the 4K and Blu-ray (all the extras are on both discs) that discusses the house on Chessman Park upon which The Changeling story is based. The chap telling us about it is a real character but once you get into it he's good fun to watch and listen to. John.

Great video John, I have never seen The Changeling but Children Of The Stones, now you're talking. I was 10 when this aired and it left a lasting impression on me. One of the best children's programmes ever. I did have that very same DVD at one point, I will have to get it again, even though it's quite pricey now. They just don't make good children's drama like this anymore.

A few weeks ago we saw Peter Medak's first movie A Day in The Death of Joe Egg on BD from Indicator and the memories of actor Janet Suzman certainly confirm Medak's humaniity! Apparently HMV are opening a new store in Dublin too so things must be going very well, probably driven by the profits to be had from vinyl records. 4K has proved to be good fun Keith and more akin to film collecting when special editions like this come out. I haven't seen many of Peter Medak's films but The Changeling certainly makes me want to look at more of his work. To think he started out under the yolk of Communism in Hungary and then in 1980 he issued something as good as this. Thank gawd he managed to get out when he did. John.

Hello John, has the Blu Ray in the 4K set been updated with the newer scan? I know some 4K releases also update the included Blu Ray, whilst others just include a re-press of the previous Blu Ray released disc. Thanks.

I couldn't find out a definite answer to this one Stephen but judging by the added clarity of the 4K image I think what has happened is the 2017/18 Severin master for the Blu-ray has been re-used for a new Blu-ray disc. It's not a patch on the 4K - not close at all. Quite a surprise but a good surprise. John.

The Blu-ray preview disc rather forced me into purchasing this pack John because the film grain was so coarse on part of that Blu-ray and I couldn't realistically review it given that 4K is the main format people are interested in. I suspected it was the old Severin (2018 I think) Blu-ray master file put onto a new disc and that does appear to be the case given that the press release states the 4K transfer was done last year and looks so much better than the Blu-ray. It's still a bit of a conundrum really but I think that's what happened. The soundtrack CD is rather nice too. The beautiful score it a vital ingredient to the success of the film. Nice to see a photo of 'The Debs' the other day. I hope you've still got all your teeth though. John.

Hey John, I loved the Changeling, so thanks for that. I'm always amazed by people who hate grain. But I'm older. the big news is that I'm now 2 weeks into eh home theater build and have just finished building staging for a second row of seats. 23x23 foot room completely repainted, relit and rewired. Project tray installed. Next up is putting in wiring for 12 speakers. Hoping to have a first showing on June 6th. Will email photos.

Have the laserdisc of this film and adore it. Easily the best haunted house/ ghost films ever made. Can see it’s influence on countless film made since it’s release. I can’t wait for my copy to arrive. I love that second sight is releasing these phenomenal films in such lavish editions. Recently I watched my 4K disc of the Texas chainsaw massacre and it was like seeing the film for the first time. Lovely company that I’m happy to support

I haven't seen The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for years but it is one of the most powerful films ever as far as I'm concerned. The colourless and 16mm look makes it ever more disturbing. There was no better company to issue such an historic film on 4K. John.

I believe that some of the imaginative programming we had on offer as children is why our generation turned out to be so brilliant! Put moronic things in front of children and you end up with morons but not us lot! Snort! Now I need to look up 'Into The Labyrinth' because I can't remember it but I expect I've seen it. I don't know about a fourth IMAX cinema opening in Britain Ian. I think you'll find it's another faux IMAX so don't get too excited unless they can definitely tell you they will have genuine IMAX on screen, but that seems unlikely given that even Bradford got rid of it and are only now putting the real thing back in for OPPENHEIMER. No, to see genuine 15/70 IMAX we have to travel I'm afraid. John.

I did mention that one in the end of 2022 round-up. I don't feel like I want to see it again but I do think I mentioned when and where I did see that horrible film back in the day. There don't seem to be many people around who can claim to have seen it at a cinema but I'm one of them. I will never forget it and every imitation that has come along ever since has been easily identifiable to me such as The Blair Witch which I could tell from the trailer was a variation on Cannibal Holocaust. The difference was that Cannibal Holocaust was terrifying, The Blair Witch wasn't. John.

The Changeling probably wouldn't be made today as there is unlikely to be an audience for it. It's too intelligent and subtle rather than a rip-snorting, loud, over the top, effects-ladentype of ghost/haunting film we'd get now. The cinema audience is children and youngsters so the days of films like The Changeling are gone. As for Children of the Stones, its a children's series and many today would find it a bit hokey and with some of it obviously shot in cheap sets it might even be laughed at. But it's the Avebury location and the magical stone circle that makes it. It's also a time twister and may be one of the reasons why I've always been into time travelling sort of stories. Susie and I have watched that DVD many times. She never saw it as a child but loves it as much as I do, probably because she never grew up either! John.

I love theater with all of its minimalistic decorations - even puppet theater if the story is good. So a movie with a great narrative but not enough effects is a show for me. I will give it a go in a week or so. To be completely honest, I am ridiculously busy at the moment. Replying to you and watching your video essays is how I relax between projects. Hey, the English student short film that I was helping to promote is finally released for general audience! Here is the title: "DARK RED - Horror Short Film - Music by Juno Reactor" It has a good social critique and a good feminist opinion. I've been doing this since the Super 8 package movie days Glen. I have quite a few of the Universal 8 releases with the shrinkwrap still on the slip covers of those. Loads of my LaserDiscs still have the shrinkwrap in place too and as a result they all still look brand spanking! John.

It's a joy to hear how much you enjoy The Changeling, John. I'm now going to watch the film history documentary you talk about at the end of the video. However, I don't know how I'm going to do it yet. I'm interested in Douglas Trumbull's work with Showscan. We've talked about Showscan before. You've seen it, I haven't. In the documentary: Does Trumbull talk about how new, digital films shot at 60 frames per second look compared to how real, analog 60 fps films look? I've only seen digital projection at 60 frames per second - Ang Lee's Gemini Man from 2019. That film was actually shot in digital 3D at 120 fps, but most cinemas in the world screened it in 3D at 60 fps (only 14 cinemas in the US, and 2 in the UK, screened it in 3D at 120 fps). I don't know how to explain it - the digital 60 fps projection looked ... fake. Then again, digital cinema projection looks fake in the first place. I wonder if real, analog film projection at 60 fps looks more ... natural.

Showscan was a big step forward but do the same thing via a video camera and video projection and - to paraphrase an interviewee in Splice Here: A Projected Odyssey - it looks like an episode of Neighbours. Gemini Man probably looked astounding at 60fps for each eye but possibly not. I think it's only in the last few years that Douglas Trumbull cracked what has been wrong with video and as he was developing his own solution called MAGI. This is a solution for existing cinemas that is delivered in a crate and assembled on site as a turn key completed installation. I don't know if it's viable for a world that is fixed to 24fps in traditionally shaped auditoriums as MAGI would be installed as a dome within the old auditorium or built within a new exhibition house building. It sounds and appears to be the next step in cinema's evolution in the documentary but I don't suppose major studios are interested any longer because they no longer have their own premiere cinemas in major cities around the world. All studios want is the money from their product and they can get and keep it all via streaming it in low quality video direct to customers who have little or no knowledge of what it is like to see a top quality film presentation in a classy picture palace. Film projectors have gone back in to a lot of cinemas so they have learned from their mistake but is it too late? I don't know, but I have concerns that it may be. So on that note, I hope you can make it over to the IMAX for OPPENHEIMER but if you're projecting it yourself in 70mm over there then that's going to be special enough. Film may have been given up for dead but it's refusing to die so why is that? I think you and I know. There isn't a UK and EU distributor for Rob Murphy's Splice Here yet so that's why I made the blatant plug for Second Sight Films to take it up in this video. I can't think of a better bunch of true film enthusiasts to do it. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Yes, you and I know why that is. I suspect that analog film shot and projected at 60fps looks more convincing than digital video (MAGI or otherwise) shot and projected at 60fps. If Gemini Man at 60fps looked astounding, then that was astoundingly bad (at least in my eyes). In the end, Trumbull probably came closest to what he wanted to achieve with Showscan with the real 70mm version of it. I'd still like to see how MAGI looks. Thank you for all the information.

I expect it's the same Blu-ray master file David. I might be wrong but I judged it on the quality of the 4K over the Blu-ray and as the 4K was only made last year surely the Blu-ray is the 2018 transfer and clearly done by a lesser scanner. Great to have this wonderful ghost story on either format though. John.

Hi John! Like others the Changling scared me as a youngster lol and the last time I watched it I wasn't really scared but sucked in and on edge. It's one of those great ghost stories and I'm pretty sure i'll grab this one based on your positive review. When I was still projecting we had The Inbetweener’s Movie showing in one screen in both digital and 35mm certain nights it was shown digital, something to do with rates payed to the distributor… mind boggling at times! Quality wise it looked identical apart from brightness staff asked me why the 35mm was slightly darker and looked better, my reply was… because the film projector has a shutter which blocks out some of the light and gives it a more pleasing less clinical look.

What a brilliant reply Graham. Next time you're asked add the little matter of the film diffusing the light too and everyone will think you're even more ingenious than you already are. Video projection in cinema is always too harsh whenever and wherever I've seen it. I think the people responsible for pushing it liked the over bright look but sometimes I feel like I need sunglasses. I only go to a cinema when I know a film print is running and after the video projected adverts and trailers it's always a relief when the film print comes on and life returns to some sort of normality. I recently saw a surprisingly good adventure film I had never heard of "North West Frontier" (1959) a British-made film set in India circa1905. I do know North-West Frontier Michael but I'm not sure I've ever seen it and if I have it would have only been a television broadcast in the 1970's. As I recall it is a highly regarded film, or at least, it was. Also known as 'Flame Over India' I think. I watched it on Blu-ray and purchased the 4K special pack as a result. It is like watching a different film on 4K though and I think that's because it's a new 4K transfer and the scanning equipment now is better than what was used a few years ago. John.

I've got the second sight blu-ray release from 5 years ago. I've only watched it a couple of times so can't justify an upgrade. I prefer older horror films, the non slasher type, more the old dark house type. Would love a 4k release of The Entity (1982) The Ninth Gate (1999) & The Legend Of Hell House (1973). 👍

speaking of shutters.... just got back from EPCOT and their 360 film on China is projected using a traditional projector. The flicker was very noticeable - and if you had asked me b4 i went in if i'd like to see the film projected w/o a modern digital projector i'd have said "yes !". But honestly, after viewing, i really think i prefer modern digital projection. Perhaps the best of both worlds is digital Rec 2020 color projected at 24fps. Something was wrong there then Windvale because there shouldn't be perceptible flicker at all. I can't tell you what was wrong but it might be the format itself because 360 degree projection would need multiple projectors (nine traditionally whenever I've seen it) so perhaps they've tried to eliminate the gaps and stretched things a little too far. What a shame. But these things are intended as a novelty and not a mainstream presentation method so that's probably how they get away with it having visible flicker. John.

I just received this today from Amazon the idiots sent me two 4k disc's and no bluray disc and no booklet like the UK version has and the picture is very grainy looks like a vhs tape and on top of that the case is broken I give up with Amazon John.

Well I'm all for people giving up with Amazon but this particular foul up certainly doesn't sound right. Is it the Severin release perhaps? I've been told that the 4K disc in the Severin pack is not the same so if you have somehow managed to get the Severin 4K then perhaps the problems you've experienced are a good excuse to return it for a refund. I hope you like this 4K disc as much as I do because I think it makes the film even more enjoyable. The opening title sequence and a couple of other shots are still overly grainy though but apart from that I think it's wonderful. The best release of the year so far when taking the whole special package into account. John.

Yes i have that series children of the stones and used to live near Avebury in the late 70s early 80s .classic series. and another series called Raven from 1977 ,

A few of us seem to remember Children of the Stones well David. My wife loved a series from the year before called 'Changes' which I have seen but should find a DVD of that one to refresh my memory. All these mysterious children's series from back then must have generated imaginations and the ability to think for ourselves. Shame children don't get programming like it today but I don't suppose any children watch television any longer so it would be a waste of time and money. John.

@@NiceGuyAidey I think it's the best 4K release I've seen so far this year Aidey. If Get Carter were in the same year that would pip it as the asking price for that one was a tenner less but I've looked along my shelves for what I've seen this year and nothing else matches this Second Sight Films release of The Changeling. Second place might actually be Deep Impact and if so, that was the two best on the trot for me. Let's hope it continues because Superman 2 is probably number 3 which means 3 on the trot. John.

Always great to see your content John. Quick ?, I got this only on BRb the 2023 second sight release and as you said I was disappointed. For example I've got Don't look now, a great companion film , again only on BR ,But compared to The Changeling it looks great. There was no details about the scan or source on the back of the changeling but I assumed it was just a new box for previous second sight release that has a more hand drawn cover with the wheel chair taking centre stage,least on that one it said Taken from a new 4k scan restoration. Maybe both releases are super grain ?. Well Enjoy Oppenheimer 🤙, I hear great things and I shall see it in time especially as The Manhattan Project Was part of target long essay I once did on " The Pacific Theatre '. It's been a while and spent half my life abroad but seem to recall we had a controversial IMAX on Bmth. Seems for most idiots it spoiled the view 🤔😠. Take care Richard

Evening Richard. The Changeling is a Severin Films transfer but it appears major work has been done to the 4K version because it is so much better than the Blu-ray. I don't know if a new transfer was done or someone worked some magic on the original transfer but whatever was done it seems to have worked. There is still coarse grain on the opening titles and one or two other scenes but for the most part it looks lovely. The Blu-ray spoiled the film, the 4K enhances the film. That was my thinking anyway. I'm looking forward to getting back to the IMAX again. I hope OPPENHEIMER is another Christopher Nolan masterpiece but I'm steering clear of any talk or reports about the film as I don't want to risk spoiling it at all. John.

Well done Stu. I had to get this special of The Changeling because having the preview BD-R sent through by the Second Sight publicity company made judging the 4K somewhat difficult. I just knew it was going to be so much better and it was. Worth every penny because the quality is so good. John.

My suspicion is they will not want us to own any physical copies of films at all, so they can sell them to us over and over. That's why I'm getting what I want now. @@jedlomax100 Not too long ago some film collectors would get raided if studios found out they had copies of their products on 35mm. Now film collectors are a major source of long lost movies and courted by the studios. I think they've probably learned their lesson and if it comes to it in the future, optical discs may be the only copies of videos that survive. We'd better all hope a repeat of the Carrington Event never occurs otherwise all the backups in cloud networks stored underground and even under water might get wiped. At that point optical and film will be the saviours. John.

@@darkvader7231 Another one that came out in 1980 was a little haunted house chiller called 'The Shining'. Other films reminiscent of 'The Changeling' are 'The Innocents' (1961) and the original 'The Haunting' (1963). I think I prefer The Changeling to both of those ghost stories though. John.

Great film. I bought the blu ray special edition which went oop and value went up. Now they have a superior 4K release which negates that version. So it seems don't buy blu ray special editions and wait until they bring out the 4k. All these boutique studios are doing this, Arrow is a main culprit too. They bring out a blu ray SE then later bring out the 4K. So now i don't buy the blurays, i just wait...

To be fair, four and five years ago 4K releases weren't selling so they weren't viable for the smaller labels and they had to keep going with Blu-rays. Now 4K does sell in good enough numbers it's just about worthwhile putting the time and investment in to give them a go. They have to be movies that will sell though and horror movies, particularly the classic horror movies, do seem to find an audience and therefore enough purchasers. I do find I'm purchasing less and less Blu-rays now though so I think I'm with your way of thinking. John.

It's from the same master as the Severin release but I don't know if Second Sight Films has their own people work on it. What I do know is that the Blu-ray is poor by comparison and that was only done by Severin a few years ago suggesting a rather sub-standard cine scanner was used for that. John.

Watched the movie today for the first time, really liked it. Now the bad news, really heavy grain and blown out colors, that I was able to turn down. Didn’t agree with your review so after investigating further there are two 4K versions. You have the Second Sight and I bought the US Severin version which I now know is inferior. Oh well still loved the spooky story.

Now that's a surprise Gary but it does perhaps explain why the Blu-ray in the Second Sight Films pack is so comparatively poor because that may have used the original Severin 4K cine transfer and now there is a new one or Second Sight have managed to correct the flaws with image noise reduction and a competent colour grader. I could see the film was a good one from watching the Blu-ray but I needed to see the 4K in order to give an accurate review and that's why I got the 4K pack in prior to release. I think it was £44 delivered so I can't do that too often. However, the difference was night and day as I said in the review. Thank you for letting me know this. I somehow need to let people know to avoid the Severin version. John.

I was very disappointed with the 4k image. Great film and package, but the worst 4k image I own. Yes, I do have the 4k disk in the player. HDR is active. I'm running 4k OLED and all my other films look great. Don't know why, but it looks like DVD to me. Any one else agree?

Start playing with all your settings because evidently something is wrong. Get this one right and you just may see a vast improvement to all your 4K discs. The opening title sequence is awful, no doubt about that, so make sure you're not confusing that with the rest of the film which only has one or two scenes that are comparatively poor. All our systems are different and what looks great on one may not look quite so great on another. Test, test and test again. Never give up. John.

It didn't when shot on film Andy. I did see Showscan before it was downgraded to video. Actually, I saw it on video too but back then the video projectors were so poor that all it did was finish off the Showscan name. A similar thing happened when Cinerama was downgraded to 70mm and that didn't last long as a result. IMAX don't seem to have learned! John.
