Les Miserables is an epic tale of broken dreams, passion and redemption, against the backdrop of a nation seething with revolution.
George Quick directs the production, the final show of the 90th anniversary season of the CTC. Tim Hinck is music director.
Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg wrote the book; Schoenberg created the music; and Herbert Kretzmer wrote the lyrics of the production, which is based on the novel by Victor Hugo.
Les Miserables tells the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean (played by Michael Dexter, a newcomer to the CTC stage), imprisoned 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean becomes a force for good in the world but cannot escape his dark past as he tries to save himself and those around him. Greg Glover is the relentless Inspector Javert, who is tireless in his pursuit of Valjean. Kendra Gross is Fantine, a poor worker who turns to prostitution to support her illegitimate daughter, Cosette (a role shared by Brooke Raughton and Colette Smith, who also share the role of young Eponine). Kaylor Bennett (another CTC newcomer) is the adult Cosette. Lauren Johnson plays the adult Éponine. M. and Mme. Thenardier (Rodney Van Valkenburg and Beth Gumnick) are thieves who run an inn and are paid to care for little Cosette. Gavroche, the street-wise street urchin, is played by Benjamin Brown (who starred as Randy in this season's holiday production of A Christmas Story, The Musical). Thomas West (founder of Let Beauty Awaken who will study at Julliard this fall) on stage at the CTC for the first time, plays Marius, a student revolutionary who falls in love with Cosette.
Les Miserables is the winner of over 100 international awards and has become a global success on stage and screen. Timeless favorites from the musical score include On My Own, I Dreamed a Dream, Do You Hear the People Sing and Bring Him Home. Les Miserables, the world's longest running musical, returned to Broadway in March 2014.
