Tokyo doesn't HAVE to be expensive but for goodness sake, don't do it like this. It's not worth it. 1/10 would not recommend to a friend.

Confirm as a constant traveler)) I went to Japan for the first time on student conference in 2013 and our group Japanese students showed us that’s it normal to go and get stuff from supermarket and eat in the park (it’s a bit hard to find em tho) so I do it every trip and only splurge in Disney Resort, USJ and most dinners)

4 years ago I went to Tokyo and did this very thing. I was amazed to see ready to eat meals in groceries selling for 50% the following day. The quality was equal to a mid-range Japanese restaurant in Manila. Thank goodness the AirBnB I lived in was 5 mins away from the grocery.

I live in a neighborhood where there are 3 supermarkets around. There are a lot of convenience stores too. But I never go to convenience store except for getting a cup of coffee.

Viewer Engagement! When my husband, toddler and I were in Japan we really craved western breakfast. We found business areas had a salaryman breakfast setto, which included buttered toast, a boiled egg, salad, and orange juice or coffee. When we stayed at a Ryokan, we had a traditional Japanese breakfast. I'm glad I had the experience, but since my stomach isn't used to fish that early in the morning, I preferred the salaryman breakfast.

There is a total breakfast culture here with good deals on western-style breakfast, you just need to be able to identify a local coffee shop. They are all over the place.

Yes! For someone who claims to have lived in Japan for 5 years, she obviously doesn't know very much about Japan or its food culture. Traditional Japanese breakfasts can be found in any number of restaurants. If you're looking for a western-style breakfast, there are bakeries, cafes, and coffee shops all over Tokyo and other major cities. She needs to get out more.

This has been very insightful. I plan on going to Tokyo this fall and basically the money for the trip is the plane ticket. By watching these vids, I've learned that capsules, 7-11's, other convenient stores, and taking advantage of the deals on food, you can get by very cheap in Tokyo. I just plan on walking about the city and seeing it's culture and the people. And I've also heard on a video that you can rent a bike for $2 a day and save your legs and ride about the city.

I found there is some western style breakfast places you just need to look for them, sometimes really hard lol... if you are in Osaka I recommend West Wood Bakers. One thing as well these places sometimes don't open till 10 or 11 am which is kind of weird for breakfast places but sometimes you gotta take what you can get.

I was in Tokyo in December visiting my in-laws. There is most certainly a cafe culture in Tokyo. I don't know about other places, but there are cafes, bakeries, coffee houses all over Tokyo. There are also places in Tokyo where you can enjoy a western-style breakfast. In addition, you can go to one of the department stores in Ginza and purchase pastries (both sweet and savory), which are wonderful choices for breakfast. I have no idea why she stated that there is no cafe or breakfast culture, when there most certainly is, at least in Tokyo (and I would assume other cities as well).

I have a question about the transportation: Can you use SUICA (I saw that you use it) everywhere in Tokyo area for every "regular" train? I get it that for the "Express" trains you have to buy one extra ticket but can I use suica to travel for example to Yokohama or Yamato without the need of buying ticket and only just tapping the Suica card? I find many different opinions online about what train lines accept SUICA and what doesn't.

Another great hack is that I want to share with everyone, especially if you need a lot of carbs is to Google 'Yayoiken' within Google Maps, and you will find that this particular restaurant has 19, yes, nineteen branches in Tokyo alone (They have branches all across Japan!). The amazing thing about this restaurant is that if you're REALLY on a budget, you can go between 5 am and 11 am (most branches are open 24 hours, if not till really late) and order a 'Natto Breakfast' for 390 yen. What you'll get is a portion of natto (fermented soybeans... it tastes better than it sounds), some seaweed, miso soup, a raw egg, a piece of tofu and here's where the best deal is: You can refill your bowl of rice, and eat as much rice as you like till... kingdom come. There's also complementary pickles on the table that goes well with the rice. If you're REALLY not into natto... then go for the next cheapest set, which is the fried egg set at 470 yen. I have survived for months in Tokyo on a 1000 yen a day budget with this hack. If you time it well, and get the cheapest set just right at 10:45 am or something, with enough rice (the rice is REALLY delicious) and pickles, it should last you the entire day. Intermittent fasting is great for you! You don't have to eat ALL the time! Here is the menu. www.yayoiken.com/en_files/regular_menu_pdf/31_2019.10Regular_EN.pdf?id=1481
