The APU in this motherboard is the A4-6210. A 4 core 4 thread 1.8 GHz clock with 2mb of L2 cache released in 2014. This was the time when Intel released their Haswell i7-4790K and AMD had the FX-6300... but for 19 bucks it's an awesome little guy.

Yeah, it's about half the cost of an OEM dell 3020 motherboard and Haswell based Xeon (each run about $20, and you'd still need the ATX power supply adapter, CPU cooling fan adapter, and front panel button adapters, so you'd be all in for about $55-$60).

I just picked up an HP tower the other day at a thrift store that uses a similar ITX board and an AMD A4-5000. This one uses an external power supply like a laptop, doesn't have any slots, and has 2 standard desktop DIMM slots. I got the whole system for $15 with a 500GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM.

Some other good models for donor cases for this type of build are the Dell Inspiron 530, I bought one in 2006 and it was my main PC for several years, in the time I owned it I added a GPU of some sort (was a long time ago) and at a later point had to replace the PSU, it used a standard IO shield hole in the back. I thought they were really nice looking in silver and white. The slightly older Compaq retail cases that were black with silver were 100% upgradeable as well, I bought one new at Walmart for about $300 that came with a Monitor, I immediately added RAM, and eventually a GPU. Over time I had to replace the PSU and motherboard, and had no issues at all with standard parts, even the front panel connectors worked right. As for the oddball motherboards with laptop CPUs, there are a bunch of interesting variations on Aliexpress for really cheap. HP and Dell have been selling low end desktops with soldered laptop CPUs and memory for years. Nothing worse than buying an inexpensive potatoe and finding out you cant upgrade it, even the PSUs are modified laptop designs. Most of them do not have any Pcie slots on board, just SATA and often a m.2 pcie slot for wifi.

3:44 what's a REVERSE sleeper? I know what a sleeper is... but REVERSE? Ummm... what, you think it's going to be better than it actually is? But with a Dell Pentium 4 era case, I don't think your expectations are going to be super high in the first place. And that case is cavernous considering the board you're putting in it!
@LowSpecActionSquad
@LowSpecActionSquad 9 күн бұрын
I mis-spoke in the video lol, a reverse sleeper is old hardware in a new case. Although, this thing is so slow that I suppose you could consider it a reverse sleeper because it's a sleeper build (new hardware in old case) but isn't any faster than the original hardware :P

I think a handful of these in a Lan setup for playing Quake 2, 3, Unreal, MOHAA, CODUO, and etc. would work great. I know we had 3 Asus laptops with the same specs and we had a heck of a great time on the back patio playing older games on them. Fun stuff!

Although I agree when using the system for general use, if you were to use this as a modern swap-in replacement for a vintage system used for vintage games, I'd have to say that using a modern OS kind of defeats the purpose lol. Again, if you were going to build a PC to use as a general PC, absolutely. But if you are building an offline PC just to play old games, then using an old OS is kind of par for the course
@SeeJayPlayGames
@SeeJayPlayGames 9 күн бұрын
@@LowSpecActionSquad I kind of agree and don't. While I agree that Linux is the way forward and for general use, and Windows is easier for vintage gaming, there's some benefit to using something like Lutris for a centralized launcher that can launch not only WINE but DOSBox, GOG, and Steam games, as well as other launchers, for the ultimate in flexibility and selection. It's not so great for Epic (Heroic is better for that, and can also handle GOG and Amazon). I don't know if Windows has anything equivalent - I doubt it. That being said, it can be a little tricky to get games configured on it properly, while Windows is usually quite straightforward, as the games are made for it. But it's pretty cool when you do get things set up correctly on Lutris. I don't know if I would do such a thing on a weak CPU like this, an old AMD quad core limited to 8GB of RAM... maybe on a light Linux distro, like Lubuntu or something, because we want to have RAM enough to run the games with. Or if you want to boot straight into EmulationStation there's also Batocera, although I'm not sure how the Windows game support is for that. I think that's mostly geared more towards MAME and console emulators than Windows (though I haven't really tinkered with it much).
