Tokyo based trio, Floating Rate Notes (FRNs) performing "The Chicken". This song was composed by Pee Wee Ellis and made famous by Jaco Pastorius. Jaco is one of our all time favorite musician.
Instead of we trade solo along with the form, Masa, the drummer and Makoto, the bassist did something little bit interesting. We trade solos by following the form but we decrease the number of measures that we play solos on as the song repeats. For the first time, we take 4 measures solo 2 times each. For the second time, we take 2 measures solo 4 times each. And the third/last time, we take 1 measure solo 6 time each. Do you get it? Try to figure it out.
This is a 3rd video of the "Let's Play Jazz Standard" series.

----A brief story about this video series----
The music genre, Jazz is the mystery to many, at least it was to me. It was kind of hard to start playing and learning it all by myself. I studied it little bit when I was in school and my teacher changed my whole understanding about Jazz.
Back in the day, I used to think that Jazz has very strict rules. You have to play with a certain pattern on ride cymbal EVERY TIME or keep the left foot on 2 and 4 till DEATH. And if you get loud, you are FIRED!!!
Playing Jazz or any genre of music is not about playing patterns, its a lot deeper.
One day I asked my teacher,
"What is the most important rule about playing Jazz ?"
he replied,
"There are no rules about playing Jazz".
I couldn't fully understand what he really meant until later.
I believe we all should have our own version of playing "Jazz. How far to dig it is the choice of oneself.
To be honest, I am not a Jazz drummer. More like a rock drummer according to people whom I have played with.
But why couldn’t a rock drummer play Jazz? Who said he can't?
Interestingly, I get offered to do lots of Jazz gigs theses days.
I can't melt the venue down and get standing applause with my playing but I can play it though just fine.
So I decided to make a video series of my version of how to play Jazz for a drummers like me.
Let's face it, we will never be perfect. I don't think there is such a thing. But we still love and play music. Right?
Don't pull yourself back by saying, "Oh I'm not good enough yet".
Jump on it, try playing it. I'm sure you will find some fun.
東京を拠点に動画投稿などで活動している、
Floating Rate Notes -
