There have been 2 teams with losing records that have made the playoffs in the post realignment era (2002). They are the 2010 Seahawks and the 2014 Panthers. BOTH teams won their home playoff games in dominate fashion (in their own ways). Seattle put up 41 points on the defending Super Bowl champs while Carolina held the Cardinals to a playoff record low of 78 total offensive yards in a defensive masterclass 27-16 victory. I would not be surprised if the Cowboys or Washington win their home playoff game (most likely against Brady and Tampa Bay as of writing this). The Cowboys could light up the Bucs defense based on what I have seen in the past few weeks or Washington's defense can lock that Tampa offense down as Ron Rivera knows how to play Bruce Arians in the playoffs ( having a 2-0 record and halting his offense each time). It sounds ridiculous but I think the NFC East winner will win their home playoff game then lose on the road the following week despite how weak that divison is but the things people have said about the NFC East this year was EXACTLY like how people talked about the 2010 NFC West and 2014 NFC South.

People have to give the Chiefs defense credit. They are also a HUGE part of the 15-1 record. When the Chiefs offense stalls, the Chiefs defense steps up and doesn't give up a lot of points. That is what the Packers post-2011 lacked. As great as Rodgers and the offense (Mahomes and the Chiefs defense are comparable to the Packers offense before 2015) were, when they stalled, the defense still have up 30+ points constantly. Good that the Chiefs are the 6th scoring defense in the league. And when the defense struggles, the offense picks up the pace. Got each other's backs

He was so damn good that this style turned in to a crutch. I worry the same thing could happen to Mahomes with his deep drops. It works when teams give him the right look. So what you're saying is, Patrick Mahomes is close to the polar opposite of Tom Brady when he was in New England... Brady was good at running a matriculating down the field type offense, He stayed inside the pocket and hardly ever ran outside of it, The New England culture prioritized discipline really effectively and that complimented their play style. Mahomes and his system at Kansas City on the other hand, are inefficient but explosive, Ya boy drops back however he wants to, often getting himself in trouble, The offense he's in lacks discipline but makes up for it in explosiveness. Both win, a lot. They're just so different! Also I know these are crazy generalizations but on the 1/10000000 chance you read this, I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

Sadly it’s looking like he may not be back for the playoffs. Fisher has not been playing that well this season, shouldn’t have made the pro bowl. Granted he’s been playing through injuries but still he’s been getting beat a lot every week. The interior OLine is just abysmal. That coupled with Mahomes not being as sharp the last month or so is pretty much the whole problem. It’s amazing they’ve still been able to win

They didn't. You could already see it in the second half of their regular season against the Chiefs. They played 2 high safeties and completely shut down the Chiefs offense. The Superbowl was a refined defensive plan of that second half. However, Brett's got great analysis and definitely knows what he's talking about.
@glatts3 жыл бұрын
Worth noting that Mahomes is not the most adept at reading defenses. He's been learning under Reid, but he never had to do it in college. It's definitely an area of weakness for him (there's a few articles on this). I think that may be a factor in his deep drop backs. He uses it to give himself time to (1) see what the defense is doing and (2) allow his receivers time to get open while being able to see it all unfold in front of him, instead of being able to anticipate based off what the defense is going to do. And as Brett noted, the deep dropbacks hurt your tackles when facing a speed rush on the edge. This is because at a certain depth, the Tackles can only backpeddle so much, so if the defender gets to a spot that is too deep, they can push them past the pocket and the QB can step up into it. But when Mahomes takes a deep dropback, he eliminates that possibility. He inadvertently positions himself into their path, a path that is more streamlined since they don't have to go around the Tackle, they can just run in a straight line to a point well behind the LOS. Additionally, the Chiefs don't really seem to do Mahomes any favors by scheming against it (like having a TE or RB chip block before releasing). I know Brady would often motion in a TE or an RB to come in to the side of the edge rush and help to block them, but I haven't seen that as much from the Chiefs. Not sure if that's 100% on the play calls or something else Mahomes could do by recognizing the defense better pre-snap.
@aderounmuadedeji1833 жыл бұрын
Also the idea that the Chiefs can't go on methodical drives against 2-high is ridiculous. That's something they've worked on this year. Saw it in the Saints game when they adjusted the game plan to quick short passing. Saw it in the second Raiders game after the Raiders beat them by taking away the deep ball in the first game. Saw it in the Bills game. Saw it in the Broncos game(even if they eventually stalled in the red zone). All their issues: short yardage running, pass protection and redzone efficiency are iOL issues. And not surprising to any Chiefs fan who has watched all year. Give the Bills and Ravens hope.tho

I have soured on football to a degree. This year the only game I watched was the Superbowl. (The contrast from this year to last is stark, certain life events, political stances, and my views on medical events have left me annoyed and dispoossesed with sporting organizations). In the superbowl my "expert" analysis was pat was forced to play a TB12 take what the d gives you type game and he just can't/won't play that type of game. It's interesting to know how/why that was.

You're definitely right, these are their major weaknesses and Patrick Mahomes definitely isn't perfect. NFL defenses have been picking up on this for a while now and everybody is able to play them tough because of this. But to say that they are unable to make long drives with multiple plays is not true. I feel they proved this in the first half of the season, specifically against Buffalo or even the ravens. Why they have shied away from this in second half of the season is beyond my knowledge, but the point is, we know they can do it and I really do think they will play whatever style they have to this postseason and do it successfully.
@SamtheCanuck3 жыл бұрын
Chiefs can make long drives if they choose to and I expect to see some of that in January when they have a lead to run the game out. Why play on hard mode when you can win on easy mode in the regular season though.

Brett is right but needs to watch more Chiefs tape. The iOL is the source of all these problems. Mahomes drops back too far occasionally but he often self corrects and only goes back to doing it when the iOL starts getting beat. He's bad Mike Remmers at right tackle for most of the year and it's not an issue most times. He also hung in the pocket against the Saints and got blasted over and over again. The net gain of leaving the pocket early outweighs the downsides.

This is awesome information. My friends keep saying the Chiefs are just going to bulldoze their way to another Super Bowl win (could very well happen) just based on their win last year and Mahomes’ greatness but no actual evidence from the season itself. I’ll tell them they’ve looked vulnerable especially the last month and a half and they’ll just say they’re cruising and will turn it on when the playoffs come but I never believed it was that simple. Your video sums up exactly why I feel that way. Thanks, Brett.

Reid's game plans shift depending on the situation. The stats you use that encompass the whole game don't paint a legitimate picture. When games are out and won by the second quarter the stats are going to look like the chiefs are not good in the red zone and are bad on 3th down. Simply because the goal isn't to run the score up on teams. The goal when up by so much is to run the clock out.

The Chiefs are vulnerable because of their o-line injuries, their line is in shambles. I don't think it's terribly complicated. And no, I don't agree that it isn't on his offensive line, because if you look at the numbers earlier in the year Mahomes sack rate was actually below what it was even last year. It's been a downward spiral ever since they lost Swartz

I live in KC metro and I have to agree with you. A ton of glaring problems that if taken advantage of, can send us home early in the playoffs. Andy has a uncanny ability to make adjustments during the game but a disciplined, don’t break defense could get the best of us. Hopefully these issues are addressed and good game plans can be executed in the near future.
