The squabbling in the camp reminds me of all the Christian faiths on earth arguing with each other over who has the right understanding of what Jesus meant.

I'm coming into your commentary 2 years after, and I'm enjoying your comments so much. I think just about the same as you--the things that I enjoy are similar as well as those things I don't totally agree with. I have watched almost all of the Chosen episodes (we're in Season 4 now) alone, which has not been a problem, as I'm never really alone. But, today, I ran across this site, and every time I laugh or find myself smiling, I look down and see that you're doing the same; then, when you comment, I was thinking the same thing. So, thank you for sharing your honest experience and your insightful thoughts. It's so cool to know my perceptions are shared by others. Also, I will say that I have maintained that I do not believe that Jesus had to prepare sermons in the same way that other ministers do, because while he was indeed fully man, at the same time, he was fully God. Jesus taught the people in sermons every where he went, sometimes for days on end. I believe the "fully God" of who our Lord is, coursed through His veins, when it came to understanding and wisdom, which is why he always had a remarkably wise response to every attack from all the powers that be. That said, I truly enjoyed Jesus' interactions with Matthew, and I think Dallas used that relationship to address many questions that people have had for generations. Whether he had to prepare or did not have to prepare, is not an essential issue, and therefore, I can overlook Dallas' take on it, and instead just enjoy watching the relationship with Matthew and Matthew's comments and thoughts, In some ways, it reminds me of my own conversations with Jesus; he's so real and wise, yet also relational and respectful.

I love The Chosen's depiction of the beatitudes-wonderfully-touching scene where Christ is drawing inspiration from his own personal interactions with his beloved disciples. I am also glad to see that Judas is portrayed as someone who is seeking the Messiah in earnest, not shown as a money-loving, sneaky caricature as he is often depicted. He was a disciple of Christ for years. We're not sure what changed in him (there is no shortage of speculation as to the 'why' on the betrayal)-but something did. This is despite him having not only witnessed firsthand Christ teachings and miracles, but having had an intimate relationship with Jesus, along with the other apostles, for nearly three years.

When the emotional constraint leaves Matthew's face and he smiles fully, it is such a victory. Also, I particularly enjoy the subplot of Jesus making sure to include Eden at every opportunity. With Simon as the only married one of the group, Jesus makes the effort to show her she will not be ignored, left out, or set aside in favor of ministry.

I think I may be the only person to have watched this episode without even thinking that we were being introduced to Judas. I was totally shocked when he gave his name. My favorite scene is definitely the Beatitudes with all the disciples representing the qualities Jesus was teaching. Such an impactful way to look at the Beatitudes. I also really love those snow-capped mountains in the background during that scene and the others between Matthew and Jesus. They add so much beauty and take my breath away.

I so love this series, it makes Gods word personable, makes the Bible come alive, and I know Gods fingerprint is upon it because the acting, the music, ambiance with the lighting, humor is just Stellar!!!! As you said...."when the Holy Spirit gave them that scene".......Yesss!!!!, makes me cry every time. You're also correct about Matthew laughing, great observation. Sadly, that whole scene where Jesus gives directions about how to find him, there was NO SOUND!!! At least I've seen it many times, but what about those who haven't? You should fix that or re do it because I really like your reactions and I've learned a lot through your comments. Also, I love the music at the end, when it's in slow mode walking up to the stage, and the music is great and adds to the whole scene, it's awful watching in silence........just sayin.

Hi Steve, I'm really enjoying your commentaries: they add a whole other dimension to the episodes. I do have a question, though, about what you said regarding Mary focusing on religious activity. She's studying the Word, which I thought would be a good thing, because that is how God speaks to us. I'm wondering why you felt it was purely religious, and what thoughts you have on how she should have spent her time. Thanks so much ☺️

Hi Ruth! I may have to rewatch to see what the context was of my statement. It could have been that some study to memorize, not to have an encounter with Him.
@ruthryser7777
@ruthryser7777 Жыл бұрын
@@EmbracetheQuestion Hi again Steve Are you saying that memorizing the scripture is not a good thing to do? Wouldn't you agree that in Mary's time access to the scriptures was not as easy as it is today and that memorizing it would help her store up His Word in her heart so that she would not sin against Him Psalm 119:11) Especially since she didn't remember much from her childhood. And she actually references the fact that she didn't want to go back to her sin when rhema asked her why she seemed to have acquired new knowledge of the scriptures. Also around that time in the chosen episodes Matthew and the women are all wanting to learn scripture. Plus she had just had an encounter with Jesus in his tent where he forgave her, and now she is wanting to read and learn from His Word.

The degeneration of Judas' character from someone who isn't particularly bad and who appears to have some conscience to someone who could betray Jesus for money (even if he didn't realise Jesus would end up crucified) is going to be very interesting. The Bible never explains why he turned or what the trigger was. I assumedJudas must have always been a shallow, mercenary individual but that's not how The Chosen has decided to portray him.
@EmbracetheQuestion
@EmbracetheQuestion 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting indeed! Scripture says that Jesus sent His disciples out to heal the sick and cast out demons. To me, that means Judas saw the power of God. The miraculous, maybe, made him callous? Many have elaborated that Judas had seen Jesus escape so many tight spots with the Pharisees that even if betrayed to the officials, Jesus would simply "escape" again. Only... Judas had missed the entire point. Jesus came to die. But overcome with guilt... he killed himself before Jesus could restore him.
@Clodaghbob
@Clodaghbob 2 жыл бұрын
Embrace the Question Do you think Judas was as culpable as some of the Pharisees who deliberately schemed to have the worst death imaginable inflicted on one of their own people? Judas did show remorse for his involvement. The guilt must have been mind-crushing.

@@EmbracetheQuestion it's my belief that the Devil inhabited Judas in order to trap Jesus. Remember when Jesus told Simon-Peter that Satan was after him, but Jesus protected him. maybe Judas was much weaker in his walk and thus more easily turned/inhabited?

@@piperpepper6601 Sorry, I can’t agree. Jesus didn’t employ demons. You can’t always get away with the excuse “It wasn’t me, it was the demons that did it”. That would assume that Judas had diminished responsibility by virtue of being possessed. Yet none of the apostles mentioned this possibility. Also, if he was stuffed to the brim full of demons, would he have been capable of such terrible remorse that he ended up committing suicide? I don’t think so. Demons are allergic to remorse.

I have a question. Why in this depiction of the disciples are they permitted to be married? I am not Catholic I am Anglican so it’s not a problem for priests to be married, but I thought the disciples are basically the equivalent to Catholic priests, who are unable to be married? Seems like this show is going to upset some Catholics, but then again Catholics like the Jews have a lot a silly and ridiculous rules which were never really intended to be followed to the letter of the law.
@EmbracetheQuestion
@EmbracetheQuestion Жыл бұрын
It's a good question. There was never such a restriction on disciples or priests. John the Baptist's father was a Levitical priest, and he was married. That said, in the gospels we have proof that only Peter was married, as his mother-in-law was healed by Jesus. He was likely the oldest as well.

I too noted that before David, & besides the Hebrews generally being herdsmen... there was specific mention of Rebekah taking special care with "this stranger's" camels; then Rachel actually being the shepherdess of her father's flock; & finally Zipporah (one of SEVEN daughters who tended their father's flock) who was also a shepherdess ("a stranger" who married straight into the Levitical line, albeit adjacent to the calling of Moses's brother, Aaron - a bit like Jesus & His Gentile bride, being a banner & invitation to the religious [seeking but misguided] Jewish nation & the whole world). David then, a picture of the Coming Shepherd & King "took possession" (he wasn't shamed by it, but rather took it very seriously) of that lowly, yet important role... which on the one hand, needed care & attention for the well-being of the flock, an obvious worldly benefit to profit for the family; but on the other hand, the spiritual light shows us that The Shepherd King is not only tender-hearted & motherly in care as the women, but that He pays special attention to every detail of our individual lives & goes to great lengths in the wisdom & might of God, not for His benefit but for ours... us being the simple-minded creatures who care only for green pastures & still waters, & find both lovingly provided for, if we just follow Him.
