Easily one of the most underutilized franchises in all of gaming. A pair of games that would spark a generation of gamers, and set the RPG bar higher than anyone could have imagined. Initially conceived by a team of superstars that perhaps flew too close to the sun.

There's an excellent video somewhere on KZbin where someone breaks down in musical terms why Mitsuda-san's work in Chrono Trigger was so compelling. I believe the author was "8 Bit Music Theory" and the video is titled "Non-functional harmony in Chrono Trigger".

If you get choked up, this is comming from a guy with the ost on a loop(usally) in the car, you need to seek psychological help. Its a video game not the birth of your child.

@@magustrigger9195 Thanks, but if I wanted a more valid opinion, I'd ask an evangelical Christian about evolutionary biology... You listen to a videogame OST on loop in your car. Nobody's coming to you for psychological pointers. I don't know what kind of wannabe alpha bullshit you're on right now, but that was a stupid statement. Music stirs up this thing in humans we call emotions, and healthy humans can experience these emotions in cathartic ways. If you think there's something mentally unwell about that, I suggest you get psychologically evaluated and treated before you ever make the error of having children and passing on your emotional trauma.

I'm pretty sure The Entity is the planet. The same force that the Reptites worshipped and became synergistic with. You get this info from Chrono Cross when Dinopolis emerges. Dinopolis is the ultimate structure created by the Reptites (the counter of Chronopolis), in a dimension they survived in and became the dominant species. They were synergistic with the planet, whereas Humans were synergistic with Lavos' power (hence the unnatural evolution of the Human species and Zeal). The Entity is the anti-Lavos, the power of the natural world; the planet protecting itself from Lavos. And yes, Ayla is absolutely named after the main cavegirl (played by Daryl Hannah in the movie) in Clan of the Cave Bear.

Marle casting Fire Magic on the box-art is correct. If you use the Triple Tech - Arc Impulse, you will see Marle casting Ice Magic which is SO COLD that it creates fire in Crono's sword. Then, look at Glenn (Frog) on the box-art...what's he doing? He's crouched down and ready to attack. And, what happens when you use Arc Impulse? Glenn crouches down, let's Crono jump off of his shoulders, and then does a mad Dash and Slash on the enemy, as Crono comes down with his flaming Ice Sword. That's all the box-art is, a sneak-preview of what you can learn and what you can do.

Cross has so many deep connections to Trigger that is mindblowing, and the bad part of it is that is all dumped on you in the final hours of the game, so it's a lot to process, but if you take your time to comprehend everything, it's one of the most precise and beautifullly written stories out there, and that is coming from a time travel plot which can have a plethora of plotholes but not in the case of this series. Everything is actually super coherent but sadly it's underapreciated by the way that it is told.

I would argue that this illustrates Chrono Cross' true weakness. The details of the plot, and whether they are internally consistent, are not the heart of a story. They are merely a fictional history. Much like real history, it bears no real value until it is contextualized by the emotions and values of the people who pass it down. Chrono Cross' plot is supposed to serve as a vehicle for conveying the real significance: that of its essential impact on the characters and the player. If the game failed to convey that impact, the internal consistency is wasted. Do all of you think Chrono Cross was successful in that regard? I'll leave it to you to judge for yourselves. If you care what I think, well, I believe CC had some small successes, but it had too many jumbled feelings which were never fully formed, detracting from its value as something to revisit.
@WaterspoutsOfTheDeep

I sure never saw it so that's why I think Chrono Cross is an abomination to have "Chrono" in the title. It's absurd to call it a sequel. One of the biggest let downs after playing that game.
@RTheu2109
@RTheu2109 Жыл бұрын
@@Radien I agree to an extent that the main plot can be one of its weakness, but that is considering the game having a single simple plot which is not the case. While the main plot is a separate branch from Trigger, Cross has multiple histories in itself and I think that's where the game shines the most, it can be its own game without depending on his predecessor. Each character that you get has its own backstory, some are really simple but others can have really epic and/or emotional conclusions, like the masamune conclusion or the sidequest of the demi-hunans, the war of the fairies and gnomes, etc, and that's just the side characters, the ones that you have to get to progress get even more development. So even if the great majority of the characters doesn't even add to the main plot at all, they have their own charm and they make the world of Cross feel connected and alive, and the game leaves you to get to know them better if you want or not, just like the main plot, you can blaze though everything and reach the end with the bare minimum that it gives you or you can go search the rest of the plot. It's there, the game gives just you the option to go look for more details. So yeah, while I agree that the game doesn't deliver it's history in the best of ways, but once I understood what it wants to tell it's one of the best and beautiful histories told in a game (or in two games if being specific) in a while that connects not just both games, but it even tries to have a crack in the fourth wall connecting us the player in the real world as well in a way, that is my interpretation at least.

@@WaterspoutsOfTheDeep I won't deny that it can feel that way on the first playthroughs, even I didn't like it my first time either, but it gave it another shot after sometime and found the connections and that made it so much better, so give it a second try later, who knows if you change your mind too.

I never found any in game dialogue that suggested that the Crono you pull from the Time Freeze isn't the same Crono that started the game. It is literally a moment in time before Crono is killed by Lavos and he is exchanged for the clone from Millennium fair.

Yeah where are they getting that from?? It's not like they found a way to give crono's life over to the clone doll - they exchanged Crono with the doll, literally grabbing the actual Crono and putting the doll there just so that their past selves would still go ahead to do the same thing when they believe they see Crono die.

The JP name of Mastermune is Grand Dream because "Masamune" was just Woolsey taking liberties with the translation. In Japanese the sword (and brothers) is called Grandleon. Hence it becomes the Grand Dream when Doreen joins her siblings. I didn't know there was controversy over the Entity. I always assumed it was the planet considering the characters themselves bring up your life flashing before your eyes before death, Lavos is a planetary parasite, and Robo gives you the Green Dream accessory. Queen Zeal also mentions she no longer needs the energy of "this tired old planet," and the cutscene that discusses the Entity is only possible if you plant the seed that Zeal instructed that one NPC to destroy. It's nice to see it confirmed though.

Small correction, when you fight the final form of lavos all you have to kill is the right core for the fight to end. You can have both the left and center enemy left on screen not just the left piece it just depends on the right core and when it turns its defense back on. You also can defeat all three and have nothing left in the white out.

I've always considered Cross to be a side-quel to Trigger, possibly a sequel to one of the alternate realities Trigger fixed during the story. I'd always hoped that there would be another Chrono game, this one having Serge brought in to the main Trigger timeline because something Chrono and pals, or perhaps the antagonist did erased Serge from their own timeline, and the two groups have to undo time shenanigans caused by Dalton or King Zeal to get back to the optimal timeline. So you'd have time and dimension hopping in the next entry.

m surprised that nobody mentioned the connections between FFVII and Chrono Trigger First being the Jenova/Lavos connection theory. That being Jenova from FFVII is of the same species as Lavos in Chrono Trigger as they are both alien beings who arrived to the planet via an asteroid in the past to consume it in the future. The FVII remake seems to make the connections more apparent with Jenova Dreamweaver being similar to the Dream Devourer and the fact that a form of time travel has now been incorporated into the story. Regarding remakes, we also have a remake for Chrono Cross in development. To add to this connection, FFVII and Chrono Trigger were also in development at the same time. Because FFVII originally started development as an SNES title right after FFVI. Unfortunately, all that apparently remains of the SNES version of FFVII is a single screenshot because development on FFVII was halted to complete.... Chrono Trigger. This inevitably resulted in some of the original concepts for FFVII being used in Chrono Trigger and vice versa. Spikey haired protagonists aside, the Jetbike music in Chrono trigger is the same as the played in the motorbike chase in FFVII. Just a slightly different tempo. When it was time resume development for FFVII, the next console generation had begun. So the development for FFVII was restarted from scratch. Thus it is funny to think that FFVII would have turned out very different if not for Chrono Trigger. And that Chrono Trigger would have also turned out very different as the FFVII devs were part of the "dream team". I suppose that could be a video topic in of itself.

I just started Chrono Cross this week, and I was thinking about how Schala may have been the true villain for this game given how the events of CT got destroyed just for Schala to be saved. From what I saw on the CT DS ending after defeating the Dream Devour, in regards to apparently refusing to let her brother or the party rescue her pretty much proves she's as selfish as her mother and probably wanted to be rid of taking care of her brother. To be honest, thinking about this has changed my view of Schala completely. For now, I'll focus on playing CC for now, but your video is great!

... yeah, the CT DS ending with the Dream Devourer is setup as a link between CT and CC, particularly because CC explains *why* defeating the Dream Devourer in CT won't let you rescue Schala. There's also the factor of what happens at the end of CC- I won't spoil but for all that there's a lot of comments about how the events of CT got destroyed in the CC timeline... uh yeah play the game to its conclusion because that actually gets addressed. But to get there, Schala's despair at the fall of Zeal and the hubris of mankind was definitely a factor.

What's worse is how the Chrono series basically just ends on a cliffhanger ever since Chrono Break - originally said to be the third installment - got cancelled after most of its development team had to leave early to go work on Final Fantasy 11 or in favor of freelance work.

Seriously, there are so many references to the Chrono games, from plot elements to time travel mechanics, that I believe it truly deserves to be called the successor of Chrono Trigger. It heavily expands on concepts and plot elements introduced in the Chrono games while still being original. It is like Xenosaga vs. Xenogears but way more entertaining to actually play (don't get me wrong, I have played the Saga Trilogy 3 times lol). Heck, it even has a crossover with Chrono Cross where you get to play alongside Serge, Kid, and Harle. You can meet "Gaspar" at the end of time, craft the rainbow weapons, walk around "Spekio's Room" 3 times and fight an optional Dragon God boss. I love Another Eden.

I can't imagine how different my life would've been had I not picked up Chrono Trigger off a shelf in Hastings, a completely random and arbitrary decision at the time. I didn't read about it in a Nintendo Power or GamePro beforehand. I didn't have any KZbinr reviews telling me it was good/bad... just a box with some pictures and inside that box... a masterpiece.

I implore you to seek a comparison between Lavos and the Jail from Mary Skelter Nightmares... those have a lot in common, and, in a surprising way, are much alike but so very different

This is an amazing deep dive into Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, and even Xeno Gears. Extremely impressive analysis, and I agree with pretty much a lot of the theories and Easter eggs on this game, I think it’s more than a game, It’s a masterpiece storyline of life, changing history, and the will to live life to the fullest. 😎

New theory: Lavos has porcupine spikes. Lavos is just an anagram for Salvo, which means he is the first round of many to come, shot through space from giant Sonic space d***, neatly connecting sonics universe with this one

Pretty sure Xenogears and Chrono's similarities come from the fact they both started life as pitches for FF7.

Wow I'm so thrilled i wasn't the only person who played these games thought of these characters as their counterparts in DBZ. i would always name my Crono = Gohan, Lucca = Bulma, Marle = Videl, and Frog = Picolo ( as best as i could fit lol).

Magus is called Maoh- Evil King -in japanese ,the same title as King Piccolo (Piccolo Daimaoh). His final look is a mix of Vegeta and Piccolo but the first design sketch was different: he looked like Dark Schneider from Bastard.

Both of these games got me really confused until this day even though I played them once or twice when they came out years ago, and revisited them a year ago. Its story is really complex for me to handle, but I still feel of both games as masterpieces because somehow even though not being fully aware, all pieces fit and you still find meaning in every character, event, and moment you see and play within the games. Let's not mention the marvelous OST both games have my god. Up until this day I humm some of the melodies every now and then. The Chrono Saga, a complicated yet big and beautiful piece of art.

CT is the best game ever. Innovative , tight and polished design. Best RPG Main Story, SideQuests and Endgame. New Game + was born because of such a perfect balance of genius design and story. Toriyama made this possible with his genius character, machine, locations and monster design. Imagine a different aesthetic for CT... like CC lol. Then, we have Mitsuda. CT's OST is a masterpiece and a mystery. Always the perfect ambiance, energy and emotions for each part of the game. Sakaguchi is cool too, very cool, but the other two are geniuses, having given CT its life in Visuals and Sounds.

Chrono 3 - After Chrono Cross, the split timelines have been merged. Set about a year after Cross, there is a sort of GoT situation in 1025 AD, wherein Medina, Guardia, Porre, El Nido, Choras, and Magus' Mystic Empire vie for power. Kid, now fully aware of her the identity of the reborn Schala, finds Serge and Magus (giving him back his memories and confirming he IS Magus after the DS ending. Eventually, Cross and Trigger characters untite to strike back against Dalton's Porre. AS this video points out, Pack a refuses to die. Lavos is actually the Yang to the Yin of existence. He is the embodiment of oblivion; time, space, and existence are an afront to him. Next, the new untied roster meets Starky who reveals he was here researching "one of the few species to resist a full-grown Lavos successfully." From there, new characters are revealed, recruited by helping to defeat the adolescent Lavos Spawn, uniquely evolved to be the apex parasite of its just planet. With characters from Trigger, Cross, and new ones from each of these times and/or planets, you seem out and eliminate the "Queen" of the Lavos." Finally, the group links up with Schala and Magus in a multistage Boss Fight (a la FF6) to defeat...the personification of oblivion and nonexistence across the multiverse...Lavos Mortaas. I'm the end, the scourge of space-time are eradicated and whole worlds and epochs have united against a shared existential threat. In a post credits scene, Toma the Explorer unxibwiwrs an ancient text saying this is a cyclical battle between order and chaos; death and life; darkness and light; creation and oblivion. Spiked to play out forever like the cycles of Death and Rebirth. Final visual somehow leads into... Final Fantasy 1. Thus...each Final Fantasy branches off from the third Chrono game outlines above as they all seal with an apocalypse--either to be prevented, repeated, or recovered form.

For only having two games, these rival FF in content created over the years. Whilst I love CT, CC is closer to my heart as it cruisy. Arni Village is my life! Cheers

I like the inclusion of Woolsey on the dream team. I think it is VERY important for western audiences to remember that translators have a Huge impact on a game's initial interpretation by the public. It can be a benefit OR a handicap (in the case of those awful Nintendo treehouse translations of Fire Emblem years ago).
