I'm still happy to say that my music and record collection was cleared out by Marty Wilson Piper (guitarist in red shirt on right). He came over to my flat about 10 years ago, and was happy to take every musical thing I had. They're now safely at Marty Willson Piper's In Deep Music Archive in Cornwall, England (I think). Cool guy!

I worked for Arista Records in the 80's & when The Church finally had a hit with Under The Milkyway & the album Starfish it was so well deserved. I was awarded a Gold Album for my work promoting the album & its a prized possession. They were a great band & you should check out When You Were Mine from their second album. Amazing this song is over 40 years old !

You are totally right. Steve Kilbey was a huge Bowie fan. This was my introduction to The Church, 43 years ago this month. Starting Year 7 at high school, off the bus in the afternoon to hide in my bedroom. Put on radio 2NX and heard this.

I was once very good friends with the bloke who is described in the last verse of this song as having the hands that don’t make me hang. The story is that Steve Kilby, the lead singer of the Church, had been in a band with a few others from his native city of Canberra. He had a dispute with some of the members of that band and was asked to leave. Unguarded Moment was Kilbey’s way of dealing with that. The first verse talks about the girlfriend of one of the band members who used to crack jokes at Kilbey’s expense. The second verse deals with the lead guitarist in the band who had been kicked in the chest by a horse when young and was the one who was instrumental in getting Kilbey’s kicked out of the band. The third verse is about my friend who was the band’s bass player, who didn’t come to Kilbey’s defence when the others were plotting to get rid of him. My friend and Kilbey’s later reconciled. This meant that my friend could take me backstage a Church concert or two back in the early days.

The live set at the Sydney Opera House with the George Ellis Orchestra in 2011 is magical. Reworking songs like Metropolis, Almost With You, Myrrh and Tantalised as more mature players who understand the possibilities in their own music is a joy to behold. Tantalised is long but epic and exciting like the William Tell overture. It is frantic. raucous, energetic, out of control and has the orchestra right into it.

I don't have much to say except it was a great song, it was great seeing them do it on Countdown and it was great seeing them do live shows with Sunnyboys. Tear It All Away, Too Fast For You, Bel-Air and Almost With You were other popular Church songs at the time that you might want to try. ''Alone With You'' by Sunnyboys will always remind me of my first boyfriend. All mentioned I recommend.
@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83

Us Countdown kids tied The Church with The Sunnyboys and for some reason, I still subconsciously see both bands as being of the same ilk. Gillian and I crushed on Steve Kilbey and Marty Willson-Piper of The Church before we noticed that their drummer was close to our age and was also cute. Then The Sunnyboys popped out and like sisters do, we crushed on Jeremy Oxley of The Sunnyboys and were upset that he was 19 and we were still under the legal age. For the Sunnyboys, try out the official video for ''You Need A Friend''. It's six minutes long with some weirdness added to it, but worth viewing. I would also recommend Alone With You and Happy Man. The Angels were closer to AC/DC than The Church and Sunnyboys, and I might leave it up to others to recommend their songs. Cheers, Hayley

Great band, they were one of those Australian acts that were relatively big in the UK at the time....in a kind of indie band way Fine purveyors of the Rickenbacker Jangle! They always reminded me of some of the Paisley Underground scene bands, ...which is not so far away from the Dunedin sound.

@@OnceWasRStrathfield I've always been fascinated that two seperate scenes could happen at much the same time, in different areas of the world, and have so much in common. I expect you know more about Dunedin than I, but if you haven't had a look at Paisley Underground, it's worth it. If you like the Dunedin stuff, you'll enjoy at least some of it. A note for Chris!....Prince was a fan of the Paisley Underground!...there's a connection with Paisley Park, he signed one or two of the Paisley bands to his label, and wrote Manic Monday for The Bangles, who were originally a Paisley Underground band.....the whole scene is well worth a look, The Bangles, The Dream Syndicate, Green On Red, The Three O'clock, you can also include The Long Ryders and Big Star. Plus a whole load of side bands that various members of the above were in with each other. Its a very incestuous little scene, kind of a mix of the DIY Punk thinking and classic sixties in some ways.
@OnceWasRStrathfield
@OnceWasRStrathfield Жыл бұрын
@@Sandy-dd4le It is quite interesting that two scenes separated by oceans could still come up with similar results. I am aware of the Paisley Underground, and the groups that came with that scene. I think The Church has a foot in that scene too. Funny enough, Rage (a music show in Australia) played an old Three O'Clock video a few weeks ago. Check out the bands that were featured Steve Kilbey's brothers: Crystal Set (Benefit Of The Doubt) and The Bhagavad Guitars (We Haven't Arrived)

Well done for picking this one! This was their first hit single which means you've started at a pretty good place. The Church are one of my all-time favourite bands. I have all their albums, including solo releases and side projects. The band have 25 studio albums with the new release being The Hypnogogue (a prog-rock album). Although they were a credible live band in Sydney, they were tarnished as a Countdown band in the early days, and us Countdown kids took to them and pushed ''The Unguarded Moment'' into the Australian charts. Australia's poppy bands in the 80s were a lot more rock n roll than the pop bands around the world at the time. More Sunny Boys...Tunnel of my Love...this is early The Church when their sound was a bit more punk rock/ alternative. Later their sound became more acoustic sounding but they remained very unique throughout their career and were bigger in the USA than Australia. Mood music but they never get it wrong...great band...these Aussie bands existed as pub bands for decades because their music was just so good.

On September 13, 1954 two boys by the name of Steve were born on different sides of the planet. One Steve was born in Australia, and the other born in England. The latter would move to Australia as a 10 pound pom. Both Steves would get into music and would eventually form successful bands. The Aussie Steve would form and front The Sports, and the English Steve would form and front The Church. In 1998, both Steves would meet and begin working together. English-born Steve Kilbey would work on Australian-born Stephen Cummings' solo album _Escapist_ while being high as a kite. Stephen Cummings would bitterly bitch about it in his 2009 autobiography _Will It Be Funny Tomorrow, Billy_ and I believe Steve Kilbey responded with something like ''I probably was!''. That's all! Reptile is a great track, probably my favourite alongside Unguarded Moment

@@Sandy-dd4le Reptile is a good song. A perfect follow up to Under The Milky Way. That was as good as they were going to get - commercially speaking.

I also thought the set looked like one of those agricultural/farm sheds when I first saw the video in 1981. I could be wrong, but I think Countdown made the video because the singer, Steve Kilbey, was not happy with the original video. I remember seeing two other videos shot in that same farm shed. Too Fast For You, possibly? This remains one of my favourite Church songs, but other songs like Too Fast For You, Under The Milky Way, Almost With You and Tear It All Away are worth your time 🙏

You are missing the point of the song. We were before our time. We didn't realise we were singing the future as well. The point of our music, was to sing about what bothered us, what we cared about, what needed to be brought to life. It was never about the technical side of music, or what sort of voice each person had, its more about tone of voice, and to get heard. Our nation was and still is a silent nation whose voice was silenced. The ones the world refuses to listen to, and prefers to forget. We were not heard in the spoken, definitely heard in the silence and remembered, as we communicated to each other through the silence, through our music, and what could not be spoken could be sung. When you say nothing about the lyrics, does a deservice to the song, writing and our generation. We want our children to remember about us, we want them to remember our truth and who we are, who we were not. To stay true to hear we are, no matter who and what tries to silence us. We will always sing about what matters, what is deep and meaningful but more importantly the truth...."telll those girls with rifles for mind....tell those men with horses for hearts.....Tell those friends with cameras for eyes" Tell them is what is important.
