The Cinder Path Trail - History/Overview

Welcome to Chariton, home of Iowa & first Rail
Trail, The Cinder Path. Just one mile west of
Connecticut Yankee Pedaller Bicycle Shop and
downtown Chariton, the trail heads for 13½ miles
Southwest to the towns of Derby and Humeston
on the abandoned Burlinton Northern Railroad.
This spur line ran between Chariton and St.
Joseph, Missouri, and was abandoned in 1974.
With visionary foresight, Dwaine Clanin,
spearheaded the effort of the Lucas County
Conservation Board in 1974 to purchase and
convert the land into the Cinder Path. A
memorial stone honoring Dwaine is at the
trailhead entrance in Chariton.
