Good, clear explanation. You’re a good teacher. The Circle of Fifths diagram should be on every musician’s wall. Especially musicians who write songs.

Thank you, Peter at SfS!!!! Trying to remember the name I saw yesterday on your video. Not sure whether you prefer "SfS" or "Peter." Let me know.
@SongsforSleepwalkers

@@chrisdurhammusicchannel Either is fine. SfS is slightly quicker to type so no preference either way. One of these days I want to hear an easy-to-understand music explanation for why augmented chords don’t have any inversions. 😆

@@SongsforSleepwalkers Um... because 12 divided by 3 is 4...? Wait! They do have inversions, they just each have three names!!! Yeah, let me think about that one. I guess it might work in a video also talking about the diminished 7th chord. You might have given me an idea for another one of these! Thanks, Peter!!!!

Having knowledge of things like circle of fifths, the chords associated with a scale and just a couple of modes has helped me when trying to work out a lot of songs. This knowledge can never restrict our creativity, it will help to ground it in why something sounds the way it does so we can repeat the experience. Warning: Learning about how to get more expression from your instrument can be addictive.

I love teaching the circle of fifths! I like your use of the boogie woogie pattern for going around the circle (some call it the circle of 4ths it you travel counterclockwise) Understanding the progressive steps through the circle really helps the brain organize chord progression possibilities especially when considering secondary dominants. Great share, Chris! It makes me want to dive deeper with my students and the exercise is a great one to try.

Thanks, Donna!!! I think the question of whether it's a 4th or a 5th is best left to philosophers!! PDQ Bach wouldn't have called it a 4th because he was too busy consuming a fifth of whatever he drank before writing those pieces!!! (R.I.P. Peter Schickele.)

@@Empirism I studied a little guitar and got into the 5 basic lead guitar scale shapes based on the CAGED system. I was always amazed at how as you began to understand the shapes of each different position to play the Major scale in, how the minor pentatonic was right there under your fingers. Great tutorial Chris. I always go counter clockwise and think of it as the circle of fourths but it doesn't matter how you get there it's a great exercise. Good idea to take the boogie woogie patterns for a spin round the cycle as like many I usually only do those tunes in about 3 or 4 keys and the cycle forces you to try new keys. Nicely explained :)

Thanks, Marty!!!! Trying to make my tutorials as clear as possible, but I realized after I uploaded it that I should have explained what I meant by "shapes." I think of the different key signatures as having different shapes for your fingers on the keys. C is like a barren wasteland without any black keys and the more sharps or flats you get, the more interesting the "landscape!"
@martycli9299

Yes the piano is tricky in this respect. If you play something on guitar you can just move it down a fret and play the same thing, same fingers - not so piano, everything changes.

Thank you, Choey!!!! There are probably some guitar KZbinrs who explain how to use the Circle of Fifths on the guitar much better than I can. I think that being able to play a simple and complex melodies starting on the E string, then the A string, then the D string, and then even on the G string would be beneficial to a guitarist the way that playing a melody through the circle of fifths is beneficial to a pianist. On the guitar, the B string changes the shapes of scales and lead patterns. This video was meant to nudge pianists out of their comfort zone and get used to the different shapes (where the black keys and white keys happen) in each key.

I really want to get a better understanding of the circle of 5th's so I'm revisiting your video. It is a cycle. Such a great point. The first time I ever heard of the Circle of Fifth's is when I looked up "Mr. Sandman" the 50's song. What notes were the girls singing in the intro? I wanted to know. It sounds awesome. The answer? It was from the circle of fifths. I was just listening to "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter Group. It cycles around. I'll bet they used the circle of fifths to create those cycles. I need to study this more. One day I would like to create something great.
