I recently reread this. It’s such a fantastic story. The idea of “the thing being sought is actually the seeker” is definitely present in many of his works, and it also makes me think of how books “read” us as we read them. I really liked listening to your take on the story!

Borges also liked Meyrink's The Golem, where that idea is explored, and where there is also a person being dreamed by someone else.

As someone who reads The Circular Ruins for the first time, I found your explanation extremely helpful to understand the deepness of the tale. Thank you for your video. Greetings from Argentina.

So interesting thinking about reality & what it means for each of us. My dreams are so vivid, I smell, taste, feel pain, see color. I sometimes question what is real & what was a dream. And a dream can affect my mood all day. I haven't read any Borges yet.

Yes I will now have to check the Spanish and see translation possibilities. Vertigo is a very fun adjective in this context!

I remember reading this when I was a teenager, it really struck a chord in me. I listened to all your Borges videos today, while I was painting. It was good to have your reflection on the breadth of his themes and work. I'll have to borrow some from the library. I've been writing some poetry of my own, and I wrote one today after contemplating your contemplation of Borges and my dad who died 12 years ago... I haven't shown my poems to many people, but I can share it with you if you're interested

Hi Antonia, I'm happy to hear you've been enjoying my Borges videos :) and of course I would love to see the poetry you wrote. However before you share, I have two provisos - 1) please don't expect any feedback/praise/criticism, 2) I understand you haven't shown your poetry to anyone, but I would appreciate it if you would post what you want to share in this comment thread here so that instead of just sharing it with me, you are also sharing it with future visitors to this video. I hope that works for you! Thanks!

Something about his writing just sends shivers through me. It's writing like this that reminds me why i decided to study English

Borges basically made a fiction out of Plotinus, best short story he wrote...
