Theory! So, I think that, yes, the wolf was just a wolf, but the wolf pup that Kalani rescued. Kalani, at the beginning, gave the wolf a spiritual marking, and put a part of her soul into the wolf. Sense the wolf pup was a part of Kalani’s journey, they had to relive most of their friends life, and experienced the hate and suffering Kalani did in order to help Kalani’s father, and possibly even put up an act. They now still have a part of Kalani in them, but they are, indeed, just a normal wolf.

I think that the wolf was the embodiment of Kalani's pain and suffering that wanted her father to understand. The "light" Kalani left the wolf there as a way of leting go of the past and showing her father that she was willing to mend the once "broken" relationship.

17:20 Hey, doesn't the shape of the sun in this shot look oddly familiar? ;) Also from what I understand, we play as the same wolf pup we see Kalani save during the game. At that point, Wolf was just a regular animal. However, I think at some point (possibly at or just after the moment of her death) Wolf gained a piece of Kalani's soul. This appears in the form of the white marking on Wolf's body and gives her all of her magical abilities. This would also be the reason why The Ember recognizes Kalani as Wolf's past life and why Wolf is able to recall memories that don't belong to her. I think that Kalani and Wolf had become somewhat soul-bonded during their time together, so when she died, Wolf became the guide that brought Atevo to the City of Light on Kalani's behalf.

This has become one of my favorite series. I do think that the wolf was the wolf pup Kalani saved, and not Kalani. I think that Kalani requested the wolf's help in helping her dad and gifted the wolf with powers to become other animals. This was an amazing game!

So from what I gather: 1- The wolf is a regular wolf. In fact, there is a good chance its THE wolf. The wolf pup, that is, which might explain why they're the only wolf around. If not, it may be one of its descendants. 2- The spirit at the start was in fact Kalani, lending her essence to the wolf. When Atevo (the soul) lashed out at the wolf after seeing the outcome of the riots, the marking left for a while, but not because Atevo had retired his support. But because Kalani was getting frustrated with her dad. 3- The memories you see, are likely in fact Atevo's memories and not your own. Which may explain why the memories continue long after you're dead. It also explains why they are tinged red (blink and you miss it but the spirit that goes to the city at the start when the cattle dies is white). 3.5- Which may mean Atevo had indeed seen about Wayla in the tent? Not sure about how he had seen the meeting with the wolf pup however.

Got to admit as much as I love this game, the song at the end is amazing. If anyone knows the name of it, please let me know? I also believe that the wolf who travelled with Kalani's father is the one that she saved as a pup. And at the beginning of the story, Kalani gave the wolf a spiritual marking (would explain the white in its fur). So a part of Kalani's spirit was inside the wolf.

I’ve only been subscribed for about year on another account but like I always do, I look back on old videos. I have a theory about this game and kalani, though. Since wolf is a soul wonderer, wolf could be just wolf and kalani! This being said, kalani could be the soul wonderer and taking over the wolf. In the first episode, when atevo found wolf, she was just wolf but then kalani also found the wolf too. Kalani could have been sent from the city of light to bring her lost soul of her father. This can also explain why there was wolf as mortal while kalani’s spirit form was with atevo at the end of the game. Going with whitehorsewinter’s theory from three years ago, wolf could have been reborn as another wolf which would also explain why kalani chose wolf instead of any other creature around because of that connection between them.

I am SUPER late to the party, but I only just subscribed a couple days ago and I'm bingeing! I've got...mixed feelings I guess? Not about the LP, that was great. Your comments/questions made me think more than the game did in a lot of cases. And the game is gorgeous! It's a treat to look at. But some of the story's messages are a little 'ehhhhh.' Like, I'm glad Kalani isn't the one who needed to repent to pass on because she repented in life and I like the idea that Atevo could only realize he was wrong by seeing his actions through someone else's eyes, but the story still explicitly said that Kalani was trying to show people the ancient ruins to educate them, to make up for starting the revolution. It's basically saying she should have done it Wayla's way from the beginning and been gentle with their oppressors, but the idea that it's the oppressed's responsibility to educate their oppressors, or that the oppressed are being irrational if they get angry at their oppressors doesn't sit well with me. Plus, some things just don't make sense? Like, a lot of commenters are saying that Wolf was the wolf pup Kalani befriended, and the story does seem to want that wolf pup to be important, but at the same time, clearly hundreds of years have passed since Kalani and Atevo died. Mountains don't collapse and cities don't turn into ruins in the time it takes one wolf to grow to adulthood. (And I personally am just a little tired of 'SYKE! HER story is actually all about HIM!')

The wolf pups were honestly kinda random - but so were the wombats? However I'm glad it gave us a pretty scenery and a chance to think and talk! :D

A comment for ones who still don't know the complete story. (Spoilers) Kalani had a normal life in an agricultural mountain village with sister "Wayla" and father "Atero". Around in her adult life crop mismanagement and poor soil treatment led to the starvation of many citizens throughout her mountain village. Kalani Being a caring person who gave food to others suffering and respected animals wanted this suffering to end. One day her sister Wayla was weak and starving in the house and Kalani witnessing enough suffering, had enough. Wayla was against the use of violence, but Kalani believed that violence was the only option to solve the issue, so Kalani went without Wayla's support. Kalani then gathered a group of people to protest against the guards about the current situation, one guard being her father Atero. The guards succesfully stop the protest, but Atero burned down Kalani's house not knowing that one of his daughters Wayla was inside. Kalani arrived to the burning house in grief as she knew that Wayla was inside the house. Wayla now dead Kalani's family bond with Atero crippled. One day Kalani and her followers went to the capital city of Quilotasi, where there she freed a wolf from blood sport, destroyed the temple's golden centerpiece, and cause a rebellion in the city, capturing the leader. But during her sucess at capturing the leader, she looked upon the now burning city of Quilotasi. She then had a recollection of her sister Wayla burning in the house which finally made her realize Kalani's decision on using violence to solve the issue was not right. She and her followers ran from the city of Quilotasi after the leader gained back control, and the guards (with Atero) came after her, along with her realization that what she had done to her thriving empire was destroyed because of what she wanted to resolve. Along this journey she created campfires as markers for the guards and Atero to follow. Atero and his guards were close to capturing and killing Kalani, but Kalani made the decision to abandon her supporters and run off to the mountains where she encountered a wolf pup stuck on a rock. Kalani being caring for animals rescued the wolf pup out of the rock, but after this was interupted by a pack of wolves. The pack of wolves luckily never saw her as a threat as Kalani rescued one of their wolf pups, after this she runs off. Kalani then arrives to the statue monolith where she tries to make a fire, but Atero and his guards find her from afar. Before they try to kill Kalani, the pack of wolves that Kalani encountered came in to stop the guards and Atero from getting to Kalani. All of Atero's people were taken down but Atero luckily took down the entire wolf pack except the wolf pup that Kalani rescued earlier. Kalani with a wolf pup then run off to the frigid cold mountains where finally Atero gets to her. He tries to make Kalani realize what she's done but in the end he accidentally pushes her off a cliff, killing her in the process. Atero himself finally realizes, and begins to feel the grief of him killing her daughter. The wolf pup that Kalani rescued went to Atero. Atero scares the wolf pup away, but feels more grief, letting the wolf pup come close to him. He then brings Kalani's body, with the wolf pup following him, eventually the wolf pup leaves Atero and Kalani's now lifeless body at this point of time. Atero makes it out to the water and gives Kalani a burial ritual, carving her a new script, and letting her go off to the city of light. At this point either Atero commits because he couldn't take in the pain of knowing that he killied both of his daughters, or lives a life permanantly traumatized of what he's done. This isn't a part of the story but those are my theories as to what happened to Atero after the events transpired. The wolf pup that Kalani rescued grows up to become the character we play as, but since alot of time has passed due to the environment, the condition of the long gone Yamran civilization, and the lost ember mentioning that he's been wandering the Earth for a long time and his recollections of how the place looked like before his death, the wolf pup could just be a descendant of the wolf we play as in the game, either a first or second generation of the wolf pup Kalani rescued. If there are any mistakes or misconceptions please reply about them, this is what I know so far of what happened before the events of the game took place, although technically it already took place because we see how it happened anyways. My take on the story: Kalani was full of hate and anger because of how the emperor and the wealthy ignored the suffering of the poor and even intentionally making things worse. She started the revolution with the intention to make things but when her partner was killed it turned into a quest for revenge. The reason her father hunted Kalani was because of his strong sense of loyalty; to the emperor but more than that to his own ideals of what the country once was and what it stood for. And a belif that whatever the emperor lacks in his way of ruling was better than the option (maybe the culture is similar anchient Egypt where you believed that the pharao was choosen by the gods and therefor the one destined to rule). He chooses to not see the bad because if he admitts that the emperor is not good it will mean that he by asociation is part of that cuelty and evil. His lifes work which has been to serve and protect has been for nothing, he would have failed. Something that is made worse as he has already lost his daughter to hate, he has nothing else left. But he might also still have love for his daughter and being the one to hunt her is the only way he can ensure some safety for her, even when she burns down the civilization. Which is why he lets Kalani go, but if someone else were to catch her they would kill her without hesitation. Kalani gave up on her revenge when she finally saw the error of her ways. That the culmination of her revolution killed innocents, not just the emperors men. As she looked out over the fire she started she saw people of all walks of life dying the way Wayla did and realised that while the intention had been good the means no longer justified the end. She had become the very thing she set out to destroy. But when her father followed her to avenge the hundreds of people killed in Kalanis revolution she realised that he too needed to see the error in his ways. So to honor her lost love Kalani tried to guide her father. She choose a new path, a path of peaceful change that she believed Wayla would be proud of. Unfortunately her father only realised what his daughter was trying to do when it was too late. I don't believe he ever intented to kill her but meant to bring her back and have her beg the emperor for forgivness so that she might be spared. But after being pushed several times he retaliated in anger, and pushed back without thinking. It was meant to make Kalani back off, to emphasize his words, to make her understand, but she fell and died by his hand. I believe that seeing that the impact of all of his wrong doings caught up with him, all at once. I think Atevo was the body holding onto Kalanis medalion (that we saw in the begining) because after he realised his daughter had been right all along he could no longer go back to the emperor and the life he had, which is why he discarded the medalion with his name. But once he died he forced himself to forgett to surpress his pain, or maybe he was not able to fully atone for his sins in life which prevented him from finding peace and Atevo became a lost ember. Kalani on the other hand, having let go of her hate and repented her wrong doings has moved on to the City of Light. But when seeing that her father can't, because he has yet to repent, she lets part of her spirit become one with the wolf pup she saved. So to help her father and also to fullfill her quest to make her father understand once and for all, she and the wolf guides Atevo. Because inspite of all of the wrong doings from both sides love trumps hate and forgiveness is often love.

If you think about it, it was the mark that makes Wolf able to wander spirits, so they really were just an ordinary Wolf, perhaps Kalani’s rescued pup

I watched this play through again. Each time I get something different out of it. This time around I feel the story was about letting go of hate and bad things that has happened, and how holding on to these things can consume you and escalate into worse things. More profound, I feel that Kalani was trying to lead her dad to the old ruins past the dessert to show him the end result of a previous civilization due to pestilence and greed and warn him of what would happen. Even more profound, is this what the writers of this game are doing for us? Are they warning us about impact of the continued gluttony of the human race and what will happen to us if we continue along this trajectory?

I loved this series the sounds music art style story and I found it very inspiring but I WAS SO SAD THAT THE WOLF WASNT KALANI I LITERALLY STARTED CRYING BECAUSE THE STORY WAS SO BEAUTIFUL BUT THE WOLF WASNT KALANI AND NOW HE MUST BE LONELY!!!!!!
