I think you can also tell that Strummer and Jones weren't getting along here, because Strummer barely sings backup on this version. lol

I noticed that too. Bit petty as it's the 'hate hate hate' bit from Strummer that gives it great contrast. Jones does well here tho

Apparently, Mick's mic had gone and he was using Joe's the whole song. That's why Joe moves to the completely opposite side of the stage.

danielscissorhands I think you might want to check out the video again. Joe sings all of the parts he’s always sung for “Hate and War” live. I think there’s like two or three other video recordings on KZbin of it between 1976 and 83 and he seems to be doing all of his parts-and passionately. I think the strain they had off the stage they made sure not to bring it on stage.

@@lestoil Joe usually does the hate hate hate bit at around 0.30 but Mick does it here. Other than that Joe does get into it

I was a young punk in the late seventies and saw the stranglers and the clash Etc and they were both the best live bands at the time and this is the end of the clash era and totally selling out to the American nightmare as in Android Americans living in the ruins of Dead Loss Angeles

Thanks for uploading. It's cool, but would have been better with Topper. :)

@5thDENSlTY It's the original, dyed in the wool, punk rock the way it was back when Sid killed Nancy.

Thanks for uploading .....but it does sound dreadfully weak-compare it to the version on 'Alright Now' TV show '79...'Know your rights' from the same gig is quite powerful ,but 'rights was one of the few Clash songs that was generally better live than on vinyl ( I remember buying the single on its day of release & being shocked at how poor it was- I'd seen them play it live the year before & thought it was a good song)...

You saw and HEARD WELL,this WASN'T Topper... :S He was their third drummer, the very average Pete Howard,he doesn't matter. (After Terry Chimes (Joe called him: Tory Crimes :)) ...Terrible Tory Crimes! :D Weak musicians! ) TOPPER HEADON WAS / IS THE BEST DRUMMER,PERCUSSIONIST IN THE WHOLE WIDE UNIVERSE! ;) They (sorry,Bernie Rhodes, their manager!) kicked him, 'cause his heroin addiction, but that was the beginning of the end in 1982! Very sad year for the fans! :( In 1983, Joe and Paul kicked Mick, and that was the real end of the band...! Topper was / is The Engine ,"The Human Drum Machine".Perfect,colourful. Mick was / is The Music Magician Genius...As Composer,Guitarist,Producer. Joe was The Soul,The Ideologist,The Poet,The Energy,Full of Life. Paul was / is Ultimate CrazySexyCool Bastard. The Hot Tall,Blonde,Handsome Guy,The Reggae-Punk Bassist. The James Dean of Rock...So Fresh,Ageless! :P

Clash Baby- I don't think you can blame P.Howard for how weak this song is ,Topper was a great drummer(I saw the Clash with him & others) but I don't think the debut lp would have been better with him instead of Terry Chimes...Also for such a big Topper fan shouldn't you include him in your homepage pic of the group??
