The Clash doing melancholy. I love this song. Strummer often gave his more sentimental songs to Jones to sing. Was a great choice because somehow Jones' idiosyncratic voice has a tenderness that serves these songs well.

Mick Jones wrote the more sentimental songs, that's why he sung them. These are not Strummers lyrics. If it's a love song or sentimental, it's Jones.

@@sunny70299 Joe actually did write these lyrics for Mick to sing. It's pretty well known. I agree that Mick was the one to usually write the more personal/sentimental lyrics, but Joe was imagining how Mick's childhood was when he wrote this. Joe also wrote The Card Cheat lyrics but Mick sings them, I do think it was about whose voice suited the song best.

Joe Strummer and Mick Jones made some very intriguing collaborations, in a wide variety of genres. My college roommate introduced me to this song from his vinyl album on the turntable, and always made sure it tracked right into the hard-driving "Clampdown" - those two songs really go well together.

I love this song for both the music and the lyrics. The whole album is the sound of the band progressing past the basic punk rock of their debut and using a much broader musical pallete to express interesting concepts and situations. As JP says, it was very influential in encouraging other bands to develop musically out of a traditional punk three chord straitjacket without disposing of lyrical bite.

The first 2 Clash albums were great but they really hit their stride with London Calling. It is easily in my top 5 albums of all time. Not a bad song in the bunch, and that's tough on a double album. Joe Strummer's death was the first celebrity death to really affect me. @justjp I would strongly suggest you listen to the song "Johnny Appleseed" that he did with his group The Mescaleros after the Clash broke up.

Wonderful song with poignant lyrics and a beautiful tune to match. This song always gets to me. :I wasn't born so much as I fell out Nobody seemed to notice me We had a hedge back home in the suburbs Over which I never could see" Amazing. One more thing, JP: Speaking of ground-breaking... I just realized that you've never hit XTC's most powerful song... Released in 1979 (the SAME YEAR as "Lost In The Supermarket")... "COMPLICATED GAME" is a sonic tour de force. Starts out with a whisper and builds from there. You'll be enthralled.

Of course I know The Clash, but I haven't done deep dives and shame on me because this is just an absolute beauty of a song - for all of the reasons you articulated - really well btw, in terms of the musical structure. Note that last part you read about alienation in an increasingly consumer driven world. THIS is pure late 70s - early 80s in terms of what we were dealing with culturally and how that comes out in music. California punk bands of the early to mid 80s are heavy on this theme.. and it turns up in lots of other music at this time too - even Synchronicity II by The Police - a totally different sounding band and song. Great reaction - I always get a little more out of hearing you react because you're coming at it as a musician and I lean more into vocals.

That reminds me of my first "job" as a little kid of five years old. We spent the summer at an island amusement park in Japan in the early 70s and I was employed in the Haunted house ride to hide behind a dark corner and brush people in the face with a feather duster as the rode by in the little car. Haha.

IMO songs like this undermined the punk ethos that musicianship and songwriting craft were the domain of 70's dinosaurs. Was it influential? Yeah, but it was also part of a general trend of sophisticated post-punk that included Elvis Costello, The Police, and The Pretenders.

@@eboethrasher I agree but my expectations are very high as a result - so it often ends up a trifle underwhelming... My sympathy 4 those underdogs in pop culture also gets in the way of a balanced evaluation... I admit that if the artists are popular i am a harsher critic. Unacceptable I know but inevitable when there s so many classic songs /albums around by lesser known bands. Similarly, I really tried my best to dig Sandinista simply because it was panned by the critics... Overthinkin moi!?
