In this video we're checking out The Clash once again. We figured with it being Halloween, we'd go with titles that reflect a darker side. And we're really enjoying The Clash. So, let's give it a go. Enjoy!

This is the original extended which was later edited down for the album track on their 1982 album “Combat Rock”. (That is why it ends the way it does. This unedited version wasn’t available until 1991.) Cynthia is right about it being to do with war as it is about the children the American GIs had with Vietnamese women during the Vietnam war and the tragedy that they were rejected by both cultures. So it is much deeper, sadder and profound, than any mere Halloween song will ever be!

This was the first time I ever heard this extended version! So far I'd always only been familiar with the one from the 'Story of The Clash - Vol.I' compilation double album. Which to be honest I prefer, because it's a bit more diversified 🙂

@@mightyV444 I also prefer the edited version (you one you know from “Story of The Clash” which is taken from “Combat Rock”. This unedited version didn’t surface until the cd box set “Clash on Broadway” released in 1991, when in an misguided effort to give something “different”, some songs were given alternative versions like demos or live recordings. But until the band released the even more comprehensive box set “The Clash Sound System” in 2013 (remastered by Mick Jones and design by Paul Simonon) “Clash on Broadway” was the most extensive compilation available. Both versions of “Straight to Hell” appear on the “Clash Sound System”.

Thanks for checking out a song I recommended. You've been enjoying The Clash, so I wanted to see what you made of one of their songs which was very different musically. As others have mentioned below, lyrically it's an impressionistic view of the repercussions of American military involvement in Vietnam.

Mick Jones of The Clash is the biggest Stones fan you can find, i think he deliberately took a leaf out of their book in regard to exploring other genres of music. By the time you get to the Sandanista album, they are doing funk, reggae and folk. Something that Joe Strummer attributed largely to drummer, Topper Headon, without Topper they probably wouldn't have been much more than a three chord Punk band. If you want similar stuff from The Clash, try, The Call Up, or they did a great version of Armagideon Time. Some members follow up bands are worth a look.... Mick Jones was in Big Audio Dynamite and then Carbon Silicon(with Tony James of Generation X).... Joe was in The Mescaleros.... Paul Simenon is in an occasional band called, The Good, The Bad, And The Queen, with Damon Albarn of Blur. Iirc, original drummer, Terry Chimes became a chef and Topper disappeared

The song is about all the kids that were left behind by their daddies that came over and had sex with women while they were over in Asia fighting wars, and then left them behind in a third world country. These children were left behind by their father's. I'm using voice text to say all this so it's probably not super eloquent but that's the main gist of the song

@@benmacdui9328And Pete Shelley was happy having an old Buzzcocks song used in a McDonalds commercial and Iggy Pop was happy to be in a car insurance commercial, and John Lydon was happy to be in a butter commercial. None of those things bother me personally, but I understand why others would be bothered by it. I couldn't care less what an artist thinks. Mick and Paul giving the song a thumbs up doesn't stop ''Straight To Hell'' reminding me of ''Paper Planes'', which is something that never happened prior to the release of the MIA tune.

To do a good reaction video you need to have the lyrics in front of you and read up on what song is about first. So much richer that way. This is one of the Clash's best songs especially after learning things like Strummer comparing factories closing down in the UK ("there ain't no need for ya") and GI babies in Vietnam ("Go straight to hell, boy").
