Here's one for you. I have purchased a lot of tools in my time. I always tell her, you have to spend money to make money. Hit her with the "when I'm on my death bed, I'll want more time, not more money". I recently bought the $2000 odd Hilti laser. I was really trying to hide the receipt, but she saw it. She was going in at me, "YOU SPENT $2000 ON A LASER?!?" I told her.. time is more valuable than money. That laser saves me an incredible amount of time, which means I can get home earlier to spend time with you and make you dinners etc. I slept on the couch for a week.

Story time: In the car with the misses, hand on ten and two, safety is paramount. Telling a riveting tale about a 'cool new tool' that would make my life at work so much easier, but unfortunately I could neither afford nor could I justify the purchase. Accountant calls; I must answer via handsfree. Safety is paramount. "blah blah blah, your business must spend X amount of dollars by X date otherwise you'd basically be giving the Australian tax office free money'. Missus turns to me with a sincere smile exclaiming that I deserve the cool new tool. Little does she know my accountant is my friend from highschool, I messaged him prior to jumping in the car with a complete game plan and I'm basically a modern day Mcgyver.

Story time! So whenever I need to (want to) get a new tool (as we're renovating our currently renovating our house) I ask my wife to check if her brother has what I need. I can then "go around his place to borrow it" and return with said tool, (def get rid of the packaging on the way home). It's been 18 months and I still have "her brothers" 18v Makita impact driver hammer drill and framing nail gun set in my garage!

Not blowing smoke, but for me the easiest way to get new tools has been watching the videos featuring Gaston with my partner. There's always something that he'll show off that she thinks is super cool (or super cute, in the case of the mini systainer). Once there's something she wants to get it would be silly not to also grab the other things I've "needed for a while"; saves on shipping, doesn't it?

How I hide my tool purchases, that's a very regular occurrence at our place. Mainly me (the wife) trying to sneak in new purchases. I am usually always super nice to hubby, make him a cup of coffee, have the dishes done before he gets home and ask him what else he would like to buy for his windsurfers. By than I usually get the question "which new tool did you buy?" Well... than it's easy to confess, since he asked so nicely. 😀

My tool hiding story - I bought the DeWalt DCL050 and hid it from my partner for working on the car. I knew she wouldn't approve of spending that much on a light, so hid it for months until we had a power cut. When we eventually did have one, it was so useful at illuminating entire rooms that she simply couldn't be mad at me - I even got a little smile from her when I said "if I hadn't snuck this purchase, then you would have been forced to light candles all around the house". Didn't have to hide it anymore after that evening!

Scott brown showing everyone he's a homeowner now by eating smahed avo on toast! Now for tool hiding, i've got many schemes, but a recent one was to levy a bunnings and mitre10 price match on some big purchases and use the deficit money to buy myself a makita router! We're building a deck and had encountered an old concrete set of steps that needed lots of additional bracketry so it was a hefty purchase and i'd worked out there would be enough of a deficit if I stuck my neck out and price matched to leave a gap in the invoice to get the router. The router was price matched too getting it down in price!

The Systainer TLoc system is such a game changer. I started off many years ago with the sys1 and was reasonable happy. Then I bought TLoc and thought, "Oh nice, it locks onto the Sys1. Own two TLoc's and you start to understand them. Three or four and you are speeding up your work flow and definitely the packing up of you tools every evening. Start adding the roll carts and your work life suddenly becomes easier. They aren't cheap as we know but just buy one every six months and before you know it, life is just better. Customers are always impressed too, they make you look more professional.

Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

Another interesting Systainerfact: The standard systainers depth and width are 30x40 cm. They fit within a European standardised system. The system works exactly like A-format paper so it doubles each step from 30x20, 30x40, 60x40, 60x80 to 120x80 which is a full Europallet size. There are many different types of cheaper Eurocrates with accessories that fit the same system so you can mix, match, stack and move the lot in one fell swoop.

Hi Lee. Which other brand of systainer are cheaper than Festool? I'm based in Australia and excepted the Makita PacMac system (which isn't as good) I can't find any cheaper ones on the market
@leegarnier9396

@@paulbulic3213 Yeah the Makita ones are based on Gen1 Systainers with the horrible sticky latches. I get them with the tools I buy and suffer in silence :D. Gen2 and 3 systainers have that swivel latch from the vid which are much easier to open and attach to other systainers. Where I'm from there's a webshop selling BTI tools systainers which are slightly cheaper than the other brands. Hope you like orange. Other than that, you might be able to buy Eurocrates. They're simple plastic crates for which you can buy lids and things like that. They're really nothing as fancy as systainers, but do the job for simple storage needs. I'm from Europe so not sure what's for sale down under. Try searching for container or storage box instead of crate. These two seem to ship to australia: www.auer-packaging.com/au/en/Euro-containers.html www.rodmanplastics.com/logistics-containers?category=Euro+Containers

@@leegarnier9396 Thanks for the two links, it feels very OCD friendly to discover that the sizing of systainers are based on a german standard of crate and pallets system!

I bought a very expensive camera (Canon R6) for my photography work I probably didn’t need it, could’ve just lived with the one that I already had but my excuse was ohhh nahhh I’ve got heaps of jobs coming up and this is necessary look at these bells and whistles (talk lots about technical camera stuff to make her think it’s worth it) it worked and I reckon this camera has returned the investment! Awesome purchase 😂😂

I came home after purchasing a brand new Makita LS1219, thinking that my wife was still at work. Turned out that she left early because she was feeling crook and she greeted me in the garage. When she enquired about the "necessity" of it (I already had 2 older mitre saws), I quietly reminded her about the multitude of parcel deliveries she had received last year, that I never questioned her about. She looked at me, nodded, asked if I wanted a cup of tea as the kettle had just boiled, then went back inside... I quickly hid the new drill combo kit, I had also purchased, in the back of one of my cabinets and went inside.

For those of you in New Zealand who maybe haven't used Knipex pliers. Like Gaston said in the video they are without a doubt the best pliers I have ever owned and used. Scott love the channel I watch every video.

I'm in edinburgh so can't win the prize (give me a shoutout) but I generally plan jobs round the house that need new tools. Fancied a whole new set of 18v aeg kit so persuaded the wife to build an extension, liked the look of a toolbelt and a new mitre saw so persuaded the wife we needed a new fence. Every man needs a chainsaw so persuaded the wife those trees needed cutting down. This has been the basis of all my tool purchases for the last 6 years.

My method for buying a new tool is to write someone else's initials on it, rub a dirty rag over it so it looks old and then say I got it super cheap at a garage sale 😎 works like a charm.

Sooooo hope my wife doesn’t read this. I have two basic MO’s: the first is to buy a specific tool for a specific project, and then just demonstrate to her how cool and efficient that tool is at doing that thing. The second is to buy something, usually an item I’ve investigated/coveted for a while but don’t have a pressing need for it at the time, but that’s on a super good deal. I buy it, then stash it in the back of the shed. By the time I have a need to use it, if questioned about it I can legitimately say “Oh this? Yeah, nah - I’ve had this for ages”. Hello plasma cutter.

I went to buy some power tools from a guy on Gumtree. The missus was of course sceptical why I would need them. When we made the deal the guy asked me if I wanted to take this big boxes for free. The box was full with old hand tools, taps, drill bits etc. It weighed about 30kg. Some of these tools I kept for myself, the other ones I sold on Gumtree and made more money than I had spent on the power tools which impressed the Missus. Now I bring this story up everytime I see a tool on Gumtree that I want.

See my method is just don't tell them, then if they notice say "Oh I've had this for ages, I just don't use it much". It's tricky to execute when you're grinning like a child at Christmas, but works every time.

I mostly enjoy the dynamic between Scott and Gaston. Good energy bouncing back and forth, even when Scott is doing flips with the Douglas. No wife or husband here, but my flatmate and I both just started pre-trades at Polytech. Living on the student allowance doesn’t really leave much for new tools, so instead of hiding new tools, it’s hiding what I sold to buy said new tool. Only happened a few times so far, but it goes something like this - “What have you sold? What’s missing from the flat? Where has my monstera plant gone?” Thanks for the videos Scott, and thanks for adding “or husband” in there too! I am very excited/nervous to step into the building industry (as a female) and it’s so good to hear you talking about/including female builders in the dialogue. Thanks for the tautoko!
