That is a fantastic routine. Only a real working professional could create such a routine with its simplicity, misdirection, and surprise. There is no stronger misdirection than having the child open the box. You could have walked an elephant in while they were all watching him open the box. The fact that it was empty made surprise all the more impactful. The final "disappearance" of the box is an extra bonus.
