Yes, this is mindblowing on several levels! The deep scientific understanding the Maya had of the orbits of Venus juxtaposed against the seemingly bizarro and fierce worlds of their gods with all the granular symbolic significances! Wow! It seems the Maya religion and culture was intricately challenging, scary and violent. this video was extremely well-written, well-narrated, well-produced and wonderfully animated. Thanks!

You got me pumped for my visit to the museum tomorrow. Thank you very much! I still dont get exactly how this represents 104 years? Does it skip several years while going through the cycle? I want to be able to read the dates on the side, so I will focus on that.
@ProfessorEstradaPhD Жыл бұрын
Have a great time tomorrow. Spoiler/Warning Alert: the codex is pretty small in size. So much of the dates have been destroyed. But the Maya tracking of Venus can be seen with other sources. Also, there appears to be 10 pages missing. There's a great pamphlet at the exhibit that will also help you maneuver through the codex. And if you really want to understand the codex, you really need to understand astronomy; I sure needed to brush up. But Venus us so integral to the Maya, you probably know more about the connection between Venus, the Synodic cycle, and the Maya than you think. Thanks again for watching and for your comments.

It is said the Maya cried out louder when De Landa burned their books then anything else. More then the destruction of idols, and temples, & the torments and tortures. The reverance of their history and the mticulous nature in which they charted it. Millenia of history gone in just a few decades. I can only imagine what was lost forrever. I know the Maya were huge nerds so I assume it was glorious.
@ProfessorEstradaPhD Жыл бұрын
The great unknown.... besides those which De Landa could get his hand, major Mesoamerican cities had libraries full of books... those were destroyed as well....
@514Exc3 ай бұрын
They didnt have idols, they had wealth in the eyes of the Europeans but, the Mayans didn't covet the objects they had, Mayans willingly offered much, as a gesture of good will but, the europeans wanted everything.
@88_garnet82 ай бұрын
They knew too much. If people have too much accurate ancient information, then you can't control them well. So, they had to take it. btw. Ancient people always spoke in flowery and poetic language, but the truth is still in it

Great video i was wondering what your thoughts are in regards to how this fits in with Mayan spiritually? What was the religious significance of Venus to them? Was it that the calendar determines transformation??
@ProfessorEstradaPhD Жыл бұрын
Thanks... I spent a lot on this one. The easy answer is Venus is insanely important in their religion/astronomy (it's the brightest planet in the Sky, not including the moon). Although I think it's somewhat overblown, the Maya used Venus to influence when to war, plant, harvest, offerings, etc... Perhaps more to your point, the phases of Venus were interpreted with negative and positive connotations, so any events that happened on one of those negative or positive phases could have real life consequences...
@4everseekingwisdom690 Жыл бұрын
@@ProfessorEstradaPhD I see my thought was that it might have be a parallel to lucifer.. not in the judeo Christiani interpretation of he being synonymous with "the devil" (how that association got started of beyond me) I mean as a being of illumination (Enlightenment) and it's association with venus as the morning star. I understand how it used biblically (context) but in esoteric circles , masonry being one fire is always associated with transformation and light with of course Enlightenment
